Kentucky goes scoreless in The Swamp, loses 38-0

“Morgan Newton didn’t bring it today.”

That’s what the ESPN commentator had to say about Kentucky’s offense as the game came to a close.

That’s being kind.

Newton made a surprise start in place of the injured Max Smith today and his atrocious outing reassured everyone why Smith won the job to start the season. Newton threw three interceptions on 8-of-20 passing for 60 yards in three quarters under center. For those of you keeping score at home, that’s a 2.77 passer rating for the game, including a -49.9 rating in the second quarter. Freshman quarterback Jalen Whitlow took over in the fourth when things were already out of hand.

While you can say the disappointment from Morgan Newton is the story of the game, it should also be noted that Kentucky completely gave up in the second half. Bad games happen, but giving up is unacceptable.

Nick will be by with more from the game in just a bit.

Discuss.

I guess its safe to say Joker is definitely done now. NOT showing up is unacceptable. Not one player in the second half looked like they cared to be on that field. Even the announcers noticed the poor body language. Even Joker had it. Sad sad day.

Listen, you can’t get mad at Joker because he’s a terrible coach. You just can’t. Yes, he has left no doubt that he isn’t capable of doing the job. He just cannot do the job. But…the guy put his time in and got his chance at the wheel. And now we all see that he’s terrible. No need in being mad at Joker. He’s effectively become a radioactive turd in the coaching community. He will never have another shot as a head coach after this season. Just let the man get fired an move on. I’m guessing he’s as embarrassed as the rest of us.

Imagine if you got a shot at your dream job and failed this miserably…..with the entire nation watching.

I don’t see why UK doesn’t go to the Big East. Louisville apparently makes all kinds of money up there, why can’t UK do the same thing? We would be in a “better” basketball conference and we would be more competitive in football. If the money is the same or close I don’t see a reason not to move. I’m tired of being a laughing stock in SEC football every year and quite honestly, I’m tired of having no competition in basketball every year. Season tickets are looking worse and worse.

I am really suprised as to why JOker kept MN in the game till nearly the end of the 3rd quarter when the outcome was determined. It’s mind boggling and mind numbing. MN had no business being on the field after the 1st quarter period. This is a poor coaching decision. You play your best players out there. I wonder if Randy Sanders had any say in this? This is bad as it gets. The players showing no emotion in the 2nd hald because you put Morgan in a position he could not succeed. He could have done other things instead of QB. Horrible and no way to spin this one around. Somewhere Minter was wondering why Joker kept putting the ball back in MN’s hand. We gave them way too many times a short field.

49 – are you serious? Maybe you haven’t noticed, but the Big East has been raided by other conferences, mostly the ACC. In a year or two they’ll be a shadow of their former selves in basketball *and* football (which is scary to think about, since they’re already terrible), as their ‘power’ programs have evacuated and moved on to greener pastures. Better to suck in football in the SEC and have a good basketball conference than climb aboard a sinking ship.

Joker should never put this kid at QB again. He is embarrassing the kid. He simply lacks the skill level to throw a pass in the SEC. 4:51 pm September 22, 2012 Permalink

Joker: Please do the right thing for the program and step down. It is only going to get worse and each recruiting class will be a little worse than the one before it. Let an assistant finish the year as the interim head coach but name a new coach (preferably Bobby Petrino) as soon as possible so that recruiting can begin and a new attitude can be infused.

I don’t care how many girlfriends Petrino has. I don’t care how many times he has cheated on his wife. I don’t care how his tenure ended at UL, Atlanta, or Arkansas. I do care if we put a decent product on the field and one that fans can at least get excited about. UK better start handing out free tickets at every Wendy’s in the Lexington area if they want anyone to come to the rest of the home games this year.

It seems the only shot we have is to try to sign Petrino RIGHT NOW. Throw major dollars at him with heavy penalties for early exit and hope he signs it. What’s scary – he might not come even now. He knows a bigger football school will take a chance on him at the end of the season. But can’t you see him using the young guys to put excitement in the game and maybe steal a couple in the SEC this year. It would get better each year he stays (three max.) At that time, you get an up and comer. The program is more attractive.

However, fire Joker at a Monday press conference…name Chuck Smith interim coach…hire Petrino as quick as he’ll sign on the dotted line and let him start recruiting as early as next weekend! The whole mindset will change and we will once again have hope! He can even take my wife for a motorcycle ride if he wishes 🙂

112 – I basically agree. At least get him signed and working behind the scenes. Still think some of his schemes might work with the young talent we have. Towles would have to give up the red shirt, though.

The only way we get a quality coach at UK is if they have fallen from grace, been humiliated publicly, or had trouble with the law or NCAA, or been caught with a coed. Hmmm. Petrino fits perfectly. I believe he is somewhere on the autism spectrum because of his inability to connect with other human beings, but that same mind is better used for creating a brilliant offensive system in football. This is what we need. We need excitement and someone who understands that we cannot just line up and compete in the SEC with a traditional mindset. Petrino will most certainly be signed by someone at the end of the year. Before he realizes his life is in fact not over, we need to sign him. 111 you are right, we would need to penalize him in his contract for an early exit. Joker needs to go. He should never have been a head football coach. I get it, it was easy and cost-effective. If he worked out it is a feel good story and done on the cheap, but this is horrid. A wide-receiver as a head coach?? What were we thinking? I do actually feel badly for Joker at this point. As mentioned above, it is not his fault we hired him.

12-he doesn’t get mentioned very often on this site but I think Gus would be a great hire

What Petrino may lack in his private/personal skills,he more than makes up for it in his coaching ability and ability to turn a college team into winners. He would be at the top of my list.Give the guy (Petrino_ a chance. He has’nt broken any NCAA rules anywhere he’s been, and has shown he can coach up teams at the collegiate level.

With the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and yound running backs UK now has on campus,Petrino would be the perfect hire.

If Mitch takes the “I’ll wait and evaluate at the end of season” approach then he’s going to put UK at a disadvantage because they’ll be other profile schools in the Football coaching market making deals to better their program while Mitch will go out hire another “Joke” like he did with BCG. Go Cats!

Hey Mitch – Make a statement, FIRE JOKER! Let the FB world know you know it is over and ready to find a qualified coach – The Joker experiment was a disaster from the begining – Joker is a good guy, bleeds blue, but can’t coach at this level – maybe high school but his play calling and game decisions would not work at high school level either. Hopefully Mitch you are already doing your due diligence to find us an experienced coach- Joker has lost this team – Mitch, have mercy on the BBN and Joker – pull the plug –
