It’s something we should get used to seeing, but still something that never gets old. ESPN is predicting great things from this years Kentucky Basketball Freshmen class. The annual Wooden award is given to the most outstanding male and female college basketball players. It has never been won by a player from Kentucky.
Each year the committee releases a pre-season watch list, and each year they hesitate to include freshmen or transfers on it. But with the one and done rule, and the culture of the game these days, that leaves off a lot of credible threats to win the award. Our man Andy Katz, of podcast ditching fame, compiled a secondary list of what could only be called a Wooden Award List Watch List, including three of our own for this upcoming season.
Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones, and Enes Kanter were all included as potential award winners. Personally I think the only player with a legitimate shot at winning it is Enes (if he plays, and if he is as good as he is billed.) I wouldn’t be surprised to see the other two mentioned as contenders, but given John Wall’s inability to close out on the award, despite being totally awesome, I find it unlikely that Knight or Jones will average high enough numbers to be the first Wildcat to bring it home. Still, I’ve been wrong once before, and it could happen again. Plus, it’s good to see them in the discussion, and it’s something that will be happening every year from here on out.
This post is subject to being rewritten in one year, substituting Gilchrist, Teague, and Davis for the aforementioned players.
