Kentucky has had classes with more 4’s, but the nicest development I see here is that we’ve gotten beyond the days where we fill 6-8 scholarships with 2-stars. Now we only have a couple that we’re gambling on, and that’s good to see.

Bottom Line is that we need playmakers. Could care less about stars or reputation and all that. The biggest, not the only, reason we got domod last year is because we have zero playmakers. Clemons is a nice power back, but i dont really consider him a playmaker yet.

Towles is under rated… And I honestly think his talent will be wasted in that offense

    1:44 pm February 1, 2012 Permalink

One of these years we’ll see a few more stars next to their names. Until then I’ll continue to be a basketball fan first. Let’s be honest, they’re not giving us many reasons not to think that way. Simple logic.

“Star Ratings” do not matter. Coaching develops talent in football. There are so many football recruits as opposed to basketball it is nearly impossible to rate them. Basketball also has things like AAU circuits, etc that make it easier to judge talent. Top ranked recruits are obviously better than bottom tier, but putting a label on them is a subjective call. Lets hope there are a few playmakers in the bunch that will break out like a Cobb, Burns, Lindley, etc. Good class overall, hopefully some Frosh will have an impact next season.

    12. Wrong. Saying star ratings do not matter is just plain stupid. The best teams get the highest rated players. Doesn’t mean we don’t have a good class, but to act like 4 and 5 stars have no better chance of being great than a 2 or 3 star does is silly.

#15 – why do we need to wait? Didn’t Brooks lay the groundwork for this program to not have to fall back to less than 6 wins per season? Joker and Mitch should have been able to simply build on that foundation laid.

If we wait for your timeframe, what year of Jokers reign will we see a 8 win season (8-4 regular season)?

#15 not sure what you mean by waiting two years if joker stays after this one. Its not like he came from outside UK. He recruited all of these kids. If he’s not successful its not because this isn’t “his” team.

20: reread what I said. I was simply saying that rating a football recruit is quite overrated. Yes, Alabama gets “5 star” players and yes the majority of the time they are better than “3 star” players. However, there are plenty of “5 star” players that never develop (i.e. Micah Johnson who should have played DE, he would have been a beast). You have to realize that these “5 star” players tend to go to schools like Bama, LSU, OSU, etc for more than just their rating. They go because of the highest level of coaching, most potential to go pro, and also most importantly to play with other great talent. Simply put: it is hard to rate football recruits. Good coaching and THEIR hard work has a lot to do with whether they live up to their “star rating.”

20 – You are correct but I see what that poster is saying. Except for the elite programs in the country, stars really do not matter. Joker is recruiting about as well as one can at UK right now. I would say we don’t have any less raw talent, especially in our signing classes, than the majority of other programs in the country. What Joker hasn’t proven is that he can develop the talent that is coming in.

Of course the programs that are getting tons of 5 star and 4 star kids will be better than UK, but how many of those are out there? UK will never be on that level (we are a basketball school first) but the program has the talent to be better than it is currently. Recruiting has never been Joker’s problem.

When listening to a recent scout interview, they mentioned the difference between a 5* and 3* isn’t a whole lot, but that the 5’s are better. A lot of time players are underrated because of the lack of film on them.

I agree we need some playmakers – I like where we are at QB and RB, but what about WR’s. We only got 2 and I don’t remember WR being a strength of last year’s team….

Also a lot of times guys are rated as high as they are BECAUSE they are being recruited by Bama, LSU, and Florida. That’s not to say they aren’t great anyways, but it could be the difference in being a 4* and a 3*. See Cobb jumping up a star once Tenn tried to get him.

A 3* from GA will a lot of times be better than a 4* from IN or KY (cough cough), just because the state is so rich in talent and he’ll also be more prepared for the jump to the SEC since he played against great players his whole HS career.

The class looks good not great saw where Tenn and Vandy classes were ranked higher along with LSU, Alabama, Flordia, Georgia, South Carolina and Arkansas. We should need to beat at least 3 of those schools in recruting if we want out of the SEC basement.

  38. winston guy's hair
    2:50 pm February 1, 2012 Permalink

You really think that’s the difference between our class and others like Vandy, Miss State, and Ole Miss? They’re arbitrary rankings and the overall quality of the classes is almost the identical.

Again, many people simply don’t understand football recruiting. Basketball rankings are a little more of a sure thing. Busts happen in football ALL the time. Yes, they happen at Bama and LSU. In fact, they happen more often at those schools due to the fact that their players are more highly rated, therefore you have higher standards to live up to.

I’m not saying this is a great class, but considering the circumstances it’s pretty damn good. And if you think our class is automatically worse than some because of some guy’s rankings then I have some ocean front property in AZ to sell you.

  40. Rivals v Scout v ESPN
    2:53 pm February 1, 2012 Permalink

When you look at the rankings and analysis I tend to lean a little more on Scout, and I hate to say it, the 4 letter position rankings. The fact is that Rivals allows the marketing depts from individual schools (and presumably conference affilitation as well) influence the rankings. Rivals doesn’t tell you how their rankings work, who is doing the evaluation and tells you very little in their snapshots about skill sets, strengths & weaknesses, in short – true evaluation. The fact is the talent pool is too large and once you get out of the top 20-30 players who are 5 stars, any player can make a difference if they are determined. Not to mention the fact that we have all seen a players ranking increase once he commits to a top 10 program, good season or not.

We have a solid stable of RBs and Taylor definitely fits a power back need.

As for WR, last year we added Demarco Robinson, Darryl Collins, and Rashad Cunningham all of whom had interest/offers from the likes of Bama, Auburn, Arkansas, GTech, etc. This year we add Demarcus Sweat (who I think can be a stud) and Jalen Whitlow who ESPN predicts will be a WR since he split time there on his way to the All State squad in GA. We will probably see the Bookie at WR as well ala Cobb. Combine that with the fact that we return King & Adams and we have a pretty solid group.

This is actually a pretty good class for UK to build on. Like someone else pointed out we are moving away from 2 starts and getting more 3 stars in our stable. Rankings matter but how they develop is also important. UK has shown a knack for developing some studs so I am willing to see what happens. Remember folks, baby steps

  42. Rivals v Scout v ESPN
    3:07 pm February 1, 2012 Permalink

By the way, at last look Rivals didn’t have the cats in the top 50 yet we had a higher star average than 11 teams in the top 50, including some big names (no Penn State jokes, thy’ve had enough). The bottom line is why did Khalid Henderson pick us over Ole Miss – coaching, we put linebackers in the NFL. Why did Towles come to UK if he didn’t think the coaching would make him successful, because we put QBs in the NFL even if only for a while. If you think Max Smith didn’t play well for a TRUE FRESHMAN or that the wild Roark wasn’t about good offensive/QB coaching you need to go watch timber sports on the ocho. Let’s not forget Marcus Caffey, Josh Clemons, Brandon Gainer and now Justin Taylor and Dyshawn Mobley – why? – because our second team guy is in the NFL! That is coaching son. Was the season a disappointment? Yes. Will it get better? With the help of the last two classes, Definitely.

#5 You are spot on! Joker is a decent recruiter, but I really think he is in over his head with being a head coach. I think that is quite obvious. To the guy who said that Joker is a good coach….what have you been smoking? That has yet to be proven, and from what I have seen he is a terrible coach. I hope that trend does not continue and he turns it around though. GO CATS!

I’ll take a stable of 3 Stars every year if we get an OC that has some vision and runs a high flying offense. Right now a barn full of 4 stars wouldn’t make a damn bit of difference, we would still be bottom dwellers in the SEC. OK State, Boise State, Houston, TexTech, etc. they all have about the same level of recruiting on a “Star” basis yet they win and it’s exciting to watch. Don’t pull the “they play weaker conferences” card, they still win games they shouldn’t on occasion because they can SCORE. We will NEVER recruit well enough to go head to head with the best in the SEC, we must be different. Then at the very least we have some excitement.

I have to laugh at the fact that alot of my fellow UK fans are hyped up to fire a coach with a 5 and a 6 win season at Kentucky in the Golden Era of SEC football. How do you sell this to another coach, “Come here, but remember you have to win 6 games every year or you are gone in three. Dont let this worry you but our league has won the last 6 National Champions with 4 different teams. Oh yeah I forgot dont let tradional powers that have slipped that wear Orange pass us up again.”

  46. Tomas
    3:38 pm February 1, 2012 Permalink

    45. Its not the wins that bothers everyone. Its the inability to do something outside the box. Everyone knows we can’t win running the same style as LSU and Alabama. We have to be different. Throw the ball, make it exciting. If we go 5-7 but loose in a way that gives promise no one would have a problem. But watching South Carolina take a dump on us and only score 3 points and only get that 3 points because they fumbled a kickoff is ridiculous.

This is a great class for Joker. Anybody hating on the class or Joker CANNOT call themselves fans. You guys bitch all the time he needs to bring in good players and here it is he has taken players from Bama, UT, Notre Dame, etc, guys who have speed, size and will be playmakers probably as freshmen, and you still bitch! Just back the damn team, football isnt basketball. Patrick Towles has the making of another Tim Couch, if not better cuz of his size. Lighten up, its UK football, at least we arent just winning 2 or 3 games. The program has gotten better and competes in games where they used to get blown out, they went toe to toe with LSU most of the game. If Joker is a bust this season, then I yeah something needs to give cuz there’s no reason to have this talent and not win ball games. Also when it comes to stars, I think we should all know they dont matter. Cobb was 2 star one of the best players in program history. Boyd was 4 star and he barely sniffs the field. As for the Hoosier fan, really? Cody Zeller has nothing on Anthony Davis. Also, your precious IU will be dropping out of the rankings soon, if they havent already, while UK has still only lost 1 game.
