Kentucky Football: What’s the Trap Game?

It’s a… well you know.

Football fiends at SEC blog Saturday Down South have already looked ahead at next year’s schedule.  And like any friendly neighbor would do, they’ve identified the spike pits, falling boulders, and hidden arrow holes each team faces going into the season.  Not literally, because those things would probably violate an NCAA rule somewhere, but metaphorically.

That’s right, they’ve spotted the trap games.

Or at least, they claim to have.  It’s hard to identify a trap game before the season even starts, because so much of it is about how the team is thinking and feeling the week leading up to the matchup.  If your team is coming off a huge win, and facing a weaker, less-lauded team, then that’s a trap game.  The pick for Kentucky this year, though, relies a little less on team momentum, and more on simply having a dangerous opponent.

There’s no momentum to consider, because I guarantee the Cats won’t lose the week before.  They won’t win, either.  Because there’s no “game before” the trap game–it’s the season opener.

Apparently, Western Kentucky is the most dangerous of the “should win” category.  I’m just relieved they’re in the “should win” category now.  But SDS highlights the pitfalls:

There’snot many trap games on Kentucky’s schedule. It’s not a knock against the program or Mark Stoops; it’s just the reality of the roster inherited. I look at Western Kentucky in the first week as a must-win game. It’s not necessarily a trap game, but it’s a must-win game. There are three games I point to — WKU, Miami (OH) and South Alabama — as games the Cats should win. There are three others they could win. The goal is a bowl game. And Bobby Petrino would want nothing more than to knock off an SEC team in his first game back.

The part about Bobby Petrino is a great point; he’s a solid coach that wants nothing more than to make a name for himself so he can get out of Bowling Green.  He didn’t tell me that, but I can guess.  It’s Bowling Green.

But is Western really the biggest trap game?  Remember, they beat us last year; you think the upper classmen have forgotten that?  Mark Stoops might not have been here, but Max Smith was.  He’s got four interceptions he wants to redeem.

Personally, I’m not sure that Alabama State, nestled between two winnable games against Mississippi State and Missouri, isn’t the biggest trap game.

To be a trap game, you must be favored to win a game…not sure we have but one of those on the schedule!

We’re not good enough yet to have trap games. We’re other teams trap games for now.

WKU is a MUSTWIN game… no yrap-game… Stoops understands what is at stake with the opponent, the one who fans wanted as the head coach and a L on last years column, bama state is the trap game. Simply because SEC wins are first n foremost (after the cards of course) and miss state and mizzou are winnable.. and everyone will focus in on those too games when the time comes… gotta be prepare to not slip in between them… #BBN #STOOPSTROOPS

WKU is not a trap game. It would be an upset if we win that game. Sure, Stoops can recruit, but he is not nearly the same caliber coach as Petrino. I’ll be happy if we keep it within 10 of WKU.

Uh..we don’t even play South Alabama. Why do so many of these blog posts have erroneous information? And why do so many of ksr bloggers keep putting down Bowling Green? I’m a UK fan but posts like this by some of you idiots make me sick.

#14 I’ll give you one thing Petrino is one of the better offensive minds in football! WKU is a winnable game but all those who think its a sure thing are crazy! UK will have to play a A1 game to beat them!

I am a UK fan in this town of “Bowling Green”. Hate to tell this douche of a writer Corey Nichols but this is a great town that many UK fans love and reside in. Not sure why your trying to bash it. That is all. Go BIG BLUE..and you better not overlook WKU all they have on their minds is beating UK again.

Way to bash the fastest growing city in the state. BG is a great town. Based on the past few posts by this clown, its obvious he has a complex around Bowling Green & WKU for some reason. Please tell the fans of KSR where the beef is? Did you go down there to see your girl or boyfriend and get whipped by somebody? There is a backstory somewhere…do us all a favor and come clean.

With all the famous songs about Boing Green and Western Kentucky, and zero about Lexington, I’d just keep your mouth shut. It’s a beautiful place, and probably no better place in Kentucky to live.

What’s your problem with Bowling Green? WKU and the city are growing very quickly. Just because UK lost once doesn’t mean that there is some rivalry. UK is Sec, WKU is CUSA. Not even a comparison. Just chill out.

We are not losing to western ever again as long as stoops is here. Winning that game by at least three scores this year. We shouldn’t be talking about western we got bigger fish to fry.

I’m sorry but there are way too many stupid UK football fans. If you think us beating western is an upset you just need to get out. Western beat us last year and that was one of the worst teams and coach we have ever had. Ain’t going to happen again people!
