I’m really looking forward to seeing how Stoops develops this team. I really want to see improvement and I don’t mean in wins for next year.

The only “excitement” that has been generated in the BBN has been the “hype” being pumped out of this website.

I see a bunch of 3 star players there.

    1 4 star (juco transfer).

How is that any different than Jokers recruiting and why did he not get this level of “excitement” pumped out of this site with each of his 3 star classes?

How many times must it be said? Star ratings can differ. ESPN had Blue as a 4 star. Hyteche has been rated a 4 star on websites. A few of those other guys are very close to being 4 stars. Pay less attention to the star power, and pay more attention to who we beat out for these guys. We’re beating out other SEC schools.

Jokeer’s 3 stars generally fell closer to being 2 stars than they did being 4 stars. And we were beating out Middle Tennessee State.

The hype is coming from how quickly Stoops has worked. He’s nailed down, 3 guys who have been rated as four star recruits on different websites in literally one month of recruiting. He’s got Woulard, Samples, Timmons, Hatcher and other 4 star guys considering us. Guys turning down other good programs to be here. That’s where the hype is.

#7, You also have to look at the other schools that have offered a kid. For example, Kyle Meadows held offers from Fla St., West Virginia, and Louisville. Joker fought off the mighty powers that are Arkansas St, Memphis, Middle Tenn, and South Alabama for the services of Jalen Whitlow. We are now battling more successful programs for recruits instead of MAC and Sun Belt programs.

    7) The majority of division one football recruits are 3 stars. The difference this year is that we are getting 3 star players that had offers from big schools, as opposed to the past where we got 3 stars that only had offers from Middle Tennessee State and WKU. The offers a player gets are a pretty good measure of his talent. Now stop being a turd.

#7 it’s people like you that never cease to amaze me. assuming that was a real critique and you’re not a troll, how can you possibly make that statement? no “excitement” around the football program? i guess we didn’t hire a new coach, who has a name that carries weight and respect nationally, and who also had a top 5 defense nationally last year, and who also has hired a very impressive staff by any school’s standards, and we have also signed a host of players (i.e. smith, borden, blue, meadows, peterson, hytche) of whose caliber have never really considered kentucky before, and are also getting visits from players (i.e. hatcher, woulard, samples, alexander, mcwilson, etc.) that we never used to get before, and oh yeah, just got $110 million in football renovations coming down the pipe from frankfort….i guess none of that has happened has it??? i guess ksr just made it all up and has pulled the wool over our eyes! and by the way, you must not know that there is a huge disparity between a bottom level 3 star and a top level one, they’re not all considered equal. for instance, javess blue, who committed yesterday is a 3 star but had offers from arizona, west virginia and texas a&m, among others. and also, a little school by the name of georgia has 16 3 stars committed at the moment, and last i checked they have a pretty good thing going. so next time you decide to come out of your hole and make an ignorant, dim-witted comment, do us all a favor and do it somewhere else. appreciate it.

    7) There was no excitement for Joker because he couldnt coach. Everyone he got either sucked or got worse after he coached them. He was one of the worst head coaches in college football last year. Stoops has not coached a game here yet but he has improved recruiting already. Joker on the other hand did what he does best….lose…get crushed by UL at UF.

17 – This. An offer list tells you more about a recruit than any star ranking. I would much rather have a 3-star with offers from 20 major D-1 programs than a 4-star that has a weak offer list.

#7 You’re not really wrong, but do you really think UK FB fans starved for a glimmer of hope want to hear it? The excitement comes from change. Period. So you should forgive fans that want to be optimistic. Having said that, kudos to Stoops for the high 3* recruits, but guess what. Bama/LSU/UGA etc. will end up with mostly 4/5’s. The question of the day is can these coaches close the deal on Timmons/Woulard, maybe Hatcher and THEN can he coach?

of the current commitments out there only 20 five stars are committed. there usually no more than 40-50 per class and only 100 or so TRUE fours stars ANNUALLY.

Ohio produces 300 D1 players every year.

Check, sometimes players move up. Reese Phillips committed as a 2 star and now gets 3 because he was TN all star M V P

#19 – jonathan – I said “excitement” as a reference to the post using the same word (guess that’s why I quoted it).

From Drew’s Post: “Mark Stoops and his staff have been making moves on the recruiting trail since taking the Kentucky job in November, and his early success has generated an unfamiliar excitement from Big Blue Nation as National Signing Day 2013 approaches.”

Since Drew and I are specifically talking about recruiting, your references to Stoops last name, his coaching staff, the Kentucky legislature approving the University to get loans is completely off subject.

But if you want to talk about it… a coach with zero wins in college football did not get Frankfort to move with the upgrades. This was something that UK had been working for years and would have happened anyway.

Stay on subject so I don’t have to make you twitch after you get all worked up from your own confusion of the topic being discussed.

Also worth noting, Javess Blue and Jaleel Hytchye are 4 stars on ESPN. However, they list Day and Phillips as 2 stars…

So Stoops has 30 3 star recruits coming in and they are all right on the edge of being 4 stars.

This is insight being provided from people who haven’t ever seen most of them play and aren’t paid football analysts.

Feel good about things… I do all the time. Know we are on the right track. This is perfectly fine. I think Kentucky deserves to have a great football team. The only way it happens it with a supportive fanbase. But when your so caught up that you can’t see beyond fluff postings, then you will be called out.

Bull$#!+ yourselves with marginal diamond in the rough fodder on over 28 3 star players. But don’t try to sell it to others like it’s really diamonds. Especially when it’s THE reason many people had it out for Joker (3 star recruiting).

  31. Jason

If we’re going to make the “aren’t football analysts and haven’t seen them play” argument…doesn’t this also mean you’re disqualified from whining about it? Since, of course, you’ve probably not seen any of these kids play, and certainly aren’t on Mark Stoops staff, recruiting these kids, so I doubt you’ve watched enough H.S. kids across the country to apply rank them.

The fact is, ESPN and Rivals both have these kids much, much closer to being “4star” than they do “2star”. You can also see that by who’s recruiting these kids: they’re getting offers from top 25 programs like Louisville, WVU, Nebraska, Miss St, Florida St….that’s a far cry from some of these kids like Battle, the 2 star recruit from Joker who’s de-committed who’s now fielding offers from Buffalo and Navy.

If you want to get caught up in the “3 star” ranking, feel free to. But there’s marked improvement in recruiting going on in the first 45 days of the Stoops era as opposed to the Phillips era. MARKED. And this is him doing it coming off of a 2-10 season where we were literally the joke of the conference. Hell, guys like Quick, Hatcher and this safety from Nebraska wouldn’t give us the time of day and are now at least looking. Give it a few years and you’ll see even more improvement. Stoops has this program headed up already – that’s a miracle in and of itself.

#27, don’t try and mince your words now. you said “the only excitement that has been generated in the BBN has been the hype being pumped out of this website”. so no, your comment – perhaps unbeknownst to you – wasn’t just regarding recruiting, but rather any “excitement” within “BBN”, as you yourself said. and as I noted there has been considerable excitement within BBN, regardless of whether this was shared by you. (and even if it was recruiting it would still be an utterly ridiculous statement as evidenced by virtually any KY message board, fan site, call-in-show, printed publication, etc.)

and if you’d like to talk about stoops’ resume that’s fine, but you can’t argue his hire hasn’t generated excitement and reason for hope.

furthermore, i’m not so sure the renovations would have come thru under phillips. yes they’ve been working on this for a decade and it hasn’t happened. and several local football media have shared similar sentiments, that without the forward momentum and enthusiasm the package wouldn’t have even made it to frankfort because of the uncertainty surrounding the revenue (all spectator driven) to pay for it. take that for what you will.

and to everyone else here perpetuating the notion that joker’s “3 star recruiting” is equivalent to stoops’, please stop. i’m not trying to hype this class as anything it’s not. but it’s absolutely foolish to make that comparison in light of actual “facts”. joker had 15 2 star and below recruits in his 3 classes. stoops has already told the 2 we had in this class to look elsewhere and the average star rating of his class is already above 3, when joker’s classes were all below. not to mention we’re no longer beating out marshall, buffalo and middle tennesse state types for recruits, but rather big name D1 schools. if you have an agenda just admit it, otherwise why not take the time to educate yourself on recruiting basics before embarassing yourselves in front of the rest of us.

lol, this thread is comical. But i gotta say, agree with jonathan here…to act like all 3 stars are equal is like saying any passing grade in a pass/fail class is the same. yea, you may have passed, but your C is a far cry from my A, even though they’re both categorized as “passing”. what’s so hard about this to understand people?! smh…

not to mention stoops only been here a month and he still putting together a good class with chances to get guys who woulda never come here. geez, give the man his due.

yea, all those big name schools are just raking in 4 and 5 stars exclusively and all they do is wipe their butts with 3 stars. but just to be sure let’s see…hmmm, florida has 10?, bama has 7, oklahoma with 11, south carolina with 14, wow, georgia with 15, no way!, and A&M with…18? you gotta be kidding me. must be some kinda mistake. and whadda u know, their 3 star rankings are equivalent to ours, high 3’s around 5.6 and 5.7. But as you guys were saying, all 3 stars suck and we shouldn’t want any of them and to hell with stoops and his so called big time recruiting!…furr stoops and hurr Saban!!!

    #40 – Where is this awesome class… –

Wait one second. Don’t try to bring facts to this discussion. Jonathan & Jason aren’t having none of it.

So your saying that Rivals, who does the ratings, and knows who is a 3.9 and who is a 3.1, is taking all of that into consideration and still putting Kentucky as 2nd to last place in the SEC in this years recruiting (with an average ranking of 3.06 average, just .06 above last place)?

Well, just that couldn’t be because Jonathan and Jason (2 people that we all know are full of credibility and intelligence coated in fact) said all these kids are the top 3’s you can get.

That would be an average of 3.9, or at least above 3.5 (since there is 1 4 star and no 2 or 1 stars.

UK Rivals Ranking as of 1/15/2013 = 3.06 stars
13th out of 14th in the SEC (0.06 above last place).

    Getting it done!!! “Unfamiliar Excitement!

Current SEC rules state that you can only give 25 scholarships per year (unless you didn’t sign 25 the previous year, then you can back sign). A month ago UK had 68 players on scholarship leaving 17 scholarships to give to reach the 85 maximum.

For 2013 Kentucky has signed 18. There have been some departures so it’s possible that Kentucky could have up to 7 more scholarships to give (if anyone has this exact current figure please share).

People can talk all about how much better Kentucky recruiting is this year HOWEVER… UK is still in the same spot (2nd to last in the SEC, 1 – 4 star recruit, and hovering around 50th in the nation).

And these stats aren’t pulled out of someone’s ass. It’s Rivals and they calculate to the 100th of a percent with their team star averages.

  48. Big Whoop
    5:57 am January 15, 2013 Permalink

Uh, #47….before Joker left our ranking was at one point 62nd with a star rating hovering around 2.50. Since Stoops came on board, Rivals has us at #49 with an average star rating of 3.06. This is the first time since the ratings and rankings began that UK has obtained anything above 3.00 in ANY of the ratings. Scout, which is the toughest rating service, has us at 51st with an average rating of 2.68 and ESPN has us >40 because they only rank the top 40.

Joker got 14 commitments. Of those 14, seven were 2 Stars by Scout’s ratings and of those three were rated as 2 Stars by ESPN and one was rated a 2 star by all three. That player has had his offer withdrawn and was allowed to de-commit publically. UK’s average star rating immediately jumped in all three ratings services.

So, Stoops is hampered by the number of Joker commitments. Since Stoops came on board, he’s received commitments from six. Z’Darius Smith is a Scout 3 Star, but ESPN and Rivals has him as a 4 star. Hytche and Blue are ESPN 4 stars and Scout and Rivals 3 Stars. Peterson and Meadows are both 3 stars by the three ratings services. Scout has Sting’s son as a 2 star and the other two ratings services have him as unrated, meaning they don’t have any info on him. JFWIW, that 3.06 average star rating by Rivals was 2.69 two weeks ago. For 2013, Kentucky has SIGNED two, not 18, so you’re statement is mistaken. We have 19 commitments including the two JUCOs who have signed. If we get commitments from some of the players that Stoops is after, you can’t expect to see some offers withdrawn and some current players transfer out. If, you will recall, Calipari did this upon his arrival. This process, while distasteful to some, is a common occurence. That coaches will sign the best players available is common practice.

I find it very humorous that you pick and choose which stats from Rivals to use to support you argument while ignoring the highest star average we’ve ever had from Rivals. That alone is cause for celebration. You infer that Stoops has improved UK recruiting, but he has. You are in the sentence in bold, but that has nothing to do with Stoops and everything to do with Joker. How else can you explain the rating improvement with the (boo hoo) loss of Jalen Battle?

The stats ignored by you, sir, are pulled out of your ass to make your argument seem valid when it isn’t.

  49. Big Whoop
    6:25 am January 15, 2013 Permalink

Oh…as an aside, Rivals lists Louisville as 61st in their rankings while UK is 49th even though UK’s average star rating is 3.06 compared to Louisville’s 3.15. The reason for the disparity is in the number of commitments. Rivals has not yet taken into account UK’s Kyle Meadows as of today. Considering UL beat Florida in the Sugar Bowl and UK went 2-10 with only the toilet bowl to its credit, our recruiting effort from Stoops is quite remarkable.

Couldn’t have said it any better myself. Much appreciated.

Here is an excellent article that puts things in perspective and offers some context regarding the SEC. I highly recommend reading it.

    @ Jason

Sorry for the spelling and grammar errors, but this guy pissed me off.

For those who don’t think our recruiting has improved any, go to Rivals and look at the last class Joker brought in as Recruiting Coordinator (2009) the 2010 class which was Joker’s and Randy Sanders’s joint class and the subsequent classes through 2012. Then look at this year’s class which isn’t even finished yet and tell me we are not improving.

I’ve been fighting the good fight on the recruiting in this post since last night. It’s nice to see someone say exactly what I wanted to say and do it better than I would have.

It just goes to show, what Stoops has done in 45 days is more than what Joker was able to do in 3 years. And this is with a 2-10 team, largely prior to the state government approving the new stadium renovations. What gets me most excited isn’t the host of better 3 star recruits and handful of 4 stars who are highly considering us….it’s thinking about what Stoops could do in a full year of recruiting and coming off a season with more than 2 wins.

Let’s put further holes in good ol’ From 10,000 Feet Up’s argument that things haven’t improved.

Derek Dooley was fired at Tennessee on November 18, 2012 and Butch Jones was hired on December 7th. Joker Phillips was fired at Kentucky on November 4, 2012 and Mark Stoops was hired on November 27th. Let’s do a comparison of all four and their recruiting.

    Derek Dooley Commitments:

    Jason Carr — 4 star DE — Committed 1/28/12
    Riley Ferguson — 3 star QB — Committed 6/14/12
    Paul Harris — 4 star WR — Committed 7/17/12
    Chauntez Jackson — 3 star DE — Committed 10/13/12
    Brett Kendrick — 3 star OL — Committed 6/12/12
    Jalen Reeves-Maybin — 4 star ATH — Committed 8/12/12
    Austin Sanders — 4 star OL — Committed 8/6/11
    Joe Sanders — 3 star DE — Committed 11/7/12
    Dan Skipper — 3 star OL — Committed 6/26/12
    Josh Smith — 3 star WR — Committed 6/6/12
    Cameron Sutton — 3 star DB — Committed 8/7/12
    Cory Vereen — 3 star LB — Committed 3/2/12

    Butch Jones Commitments:
    A.J. Branisel — 3 star TE — Committed 1/2/13
    Malik Foreman — 3 star ATH — Committed 12/29/12
    Ryan Jenkins — 3 star WR — Committed 1/7/13
    Riyahd Jones — 3 star DB — Committed 12/21/12
    Woody Quinn — 2 star TE — Committed 1/14/13
    Dylan Wiseman — 3 star OL — Committed 1/4/13

    Joker Phillips Commitments:
    Alvonte Bell — 3 star DE — Committed 6/5/12
    Ander Bodkin — 3 star OL — Committed 10/3/12
    Jake Boynton — 3 star OL — Committed 6/17/12
    Justin Day — 3 star OL — Committed 6/29/12
    Darren Dowdell — 3 star ATH — Committed 10/3/12
    Jacob Hyde — 3 star DT — Committed 3/1/12
    Austin McGinnes — 3 star K — Committed 6/23/12
    Blake McClain — 3 star DB — Committed 6/27/12
    Ramsey Meyers — 3 star OL — Committed 6/23/12
    Reece Phillips — 3 star QB — Committed 6/6/12
    Kahlid Thomas — 3 star RB — Committed 7/8/12
    Deangelo Yancy — 3 star WR — Committed 7/31/12
    Jalen Battle — 2 star S — Committed 09/29/12 — Offer withdrawn by Stoops

    Mark Stoops Commitments:
Steven Borden (JUCO) — Non Rated TE — Committed 12/19/12 — signed LOI
    Za’Darius Smith (JUCO) — 4 star DE — Commited 12/19/12 — signed LOI
Javess Blue (JUCO) — 3 star WR- Committed 1/13/13
    Jaleel Hytchye — 3 star DB — Committed 1/5/13
    Kyle Meadows — 3 star OL — Committed 1/12/13
    Lovell Peterson — 3 star DT — Committed 1/12/13

I think you can plainly see that Joker’s staff couldn’t hold a candle to Dooley’s, but Stoops is more than holding his own against Jones.

All 3-star players. How is this any different than Joker’s recruiting? Where is the big windfall we are supposed to get from this staff’s recruiting prowess?
Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

Big Whoop, thx for your efforts to dispel the nonsense being spewed by this 10,000 clown. I attempted to do the same but to no avail. At some point you have to acknowledge that he’s a troll – likely a UofL fan – with nothing better to do than ruffle feathers amongst a rival fan base.

For the record, I have no problem with people posing the question about how to compare/contrast Joker’s recruiting classes with this one, or with his recruiting ability overall versus that of Stoops. Assuming these people are objective and open-minded, it’s not difficult to differentiate the two. What pains me to no end are the people who will then continue to espouse the same ‘all 3 stars are equivalent’ mentality like its gospel. But what are you gonna do?

and 10,000…as I said above I’m not convinced you’re real but for argument’s sake let me address a couple of your earlier points. As to where this “awesome” recruiting class is, when did I ever use that word? I didn’t. It’s a relative term, so the 50th ranked class could be awesome if it was better than what you were used to (i.e. WKU), or it could suck if it was worse (i.e. Alabama). And as your nice little breakdown shows, this class is already the best (talent-wise according to star average) than any class in the past decade! (and further back if you were to look) To me, yes that is encouraging.

You then argue that KY is still ranked 13 out of 14 schools in the SEC. So let me get this straight, a coach is hired with TWO months to go til signing day, and not only do you expect his class to not fall apart (as is often the case when a coaching change occurs, esp this late in the game) but rather you expect him to come and sign a BETTER class?! Ok, maybe he can solve the fiscal cliff, broker an arab-israeli peace deal and bring about an end to global warming while he’s at it! Yes, to win in the SEC we’d love to see our classes improve over his tenure, but to do it in two months? Please.

Secondly, 3 star recruits aren’t graded by scores in the 3’s, from 3.1 to 3.9 like you said…it’s the 5’s, but I’m sure you already knew that since you’re such a guru.

Lastly, what is your point? Honestly. No one, or at least not me, is saying that we’re bringing in the best class in the country or anything close. But are the players better rated than previous classes? Yes, as proven by your chart. Are we beating out better schools for players (a more accurate predictor of talent if you ask me since this would be based on coach evaluation, not scouts)? Yes, as evidenced by our players offer sheets. Are we getting in the homes of, and visits from, players who have rarely considered a school like UK before? Undoubtedly, as illustrated by our visitor list this past weekend. All of those points can’t be argued. So, having said that, what is your point? If you were real I’d be interested to hear it. But since you’re not I’m sure you’ll make up some bs like before about how facts are irrelevant to us and we’re just sycophants drinking the big-blue koolaid. So go ahead and come up with something good, at this point you’re a welcome comic relief from an otherwise dreary, frigid Tuesday afternoon.
