There is an old saying in Football recruiting, passed down through the generations from Red Grange all the way to Cade McNown…..you never can count on a football recruit, until they suit up in their first game. With all the permutations and possibilities in football….going juco, grey shirting, injury, falling in love with a drama major…..you never truly know if you have the next Matt Leinert or the next Ron Powlus.
Once again this bug has hit UK football as stud athlete and future WR Lashun Watson got the news that he will not be academically qualified to play at UK. This is a tough blow for the Cats on a number of levels, as Watson was considered one of the best athletes in the coming class and a potential star for the basketball team, as Watson was named one of the outstanding players in his state at b-ball. For a football team lacking depth at wide receiver, Watson was a potential impact player and a guy that Brooks and company thought could have a role in the upcoming season.
It is always amazing to me that kids do not qualify for the NCAA competition, especially since the system has been altered in recent years to take high school grades into account more, thus giving anyone with the ability to pass Freshman English the ability to make a Div I standard. I am not sure how it happens that player are unable to form (and act like I am Morgan Freeman here in “Stand by Me”) “the BASIC skills to succeed in life.” But once again it happens, and the UK sports program will take a hit.
