Kentucky falls to South Carolina 38-17

After QB Max Smith goes down on the first drive with an ankle injury, freshman QB Jalen Whitlow steps in and carries the Cats to a 17-7 lead going into the half. The wheels started to fall off in the second, though, and Kentucky couldn’t hold off the Gamecocks for the upset. South Carolina scores 31 unanswered points to end the game, and wins it 38-17. I’ll be back a little later with a longer recap.

Feel free to discuss among yourselves until then.

Yes, scoring at the end of the first half would have really made a difference. Would have lost by 14 and not 21. We didn’t play all that well in the first. It was more SC not playing well, then us playing great.

This was Joker’s chance, and he blew it. Kentucky football is a repeat every week. Get excited in the 1st quarter, and then feel like puking for the 2nd half. Every week I decieve myself into thinking, “Kentucky is gonna pull off the upset!” but tell me how often that happens.

For all the haters out there that talk bad about kentucky, remember that a true freshman came in and played his heart out. show a little damn support instead being negative all the time. this guys put on a great game and whether they feel apart in the second half, atleast there out there giving it there all. most UK fans should be ashame of themselves and shouldnt call themselves kentucky fans. Great game cats and hopefully you guys can continue to improve and start winningsome game. GO Cats

This is aweful that any fan would accept this as any sort of a victory. South Carolina was our best player in the first half and if it wasn’t for them it wouldn’t have even been close. It’s time for a change with the football team! It has been on a downward spiral since joker has taken over and it’s time for someone fresh to try and turn this program around like many others have tried. I haven’t seen it this bad since Bill Curry and that was horrible and thought it couldn’t get much worse but I guess joker has shown me it can. Time to clean house and start fresh or we might as well cancel our football program!!!

The d had a great first half but the game has two and they were a no show in the second and let them run all over them. There was NO effort in the second half by our offensive line that is suppose to be our strong part of the team. We have some bright spots on the team but I’m sure if joker stays around they will either leave or just burn out like Morgan did.

Did anyone really think UK stood a chance against Steve Spurrier and the #6 team in the land? The first half was a fluke. “Fool’s gold.” There was no way this coaching staff was going to beat USC. Period. And then brainiacs such as “Chris” and “Larry” and others race to call in on the radio post game shows to tell the world how much smarter they are than everyone else. We purposefully gave Kentucky the lead in the first half to give Joker a fighting chance at finding a new job last season. Turned it up in the second half, though – just so people wouldn’t question our ranking. Really, it was nice of me to not run the score up into the 70s. I’ll blast Kentucky in the media, though, because my fans love it.

USC was obviously looking past UK to their game w/ UGA next week. Once we got their attention, we were reminded that we are who we thought we were… the worst team in the SEC. At least under Brooks were were only the second to worst team.

While I will admit I was amused that we still didn’t cover the spread despite our first half success, I think we should show some support for our team’s efforts tonight. We lost Smith early and our team still battled hard against one of the best teams in the country. For a true freshman to step in at QB against possibly the best defensive front around is a very good sign. The kid kept his composure throughout. Maybe a coaching change would help, but after tonight’s game we should simply show our support for the kids who gave it everything they had, particularly Whitlow.

Let’s be honest. Do you really think Kentucky “competed” tonight? I’d say they were lucky in the first half. Let’s look at the facts:
    1. USC drops a wide open TD that “allows” our D another chance to make a stop. That’s luck.
    2. USC CB mistimes his jump and drops a pick 6 only to have the batted ball miraculously caught by UK. That’s luck.
    3. In the second half they outscore us 31-0 (which could’ve been worse if Spurrier doens’t put in his subs and call conservative plays at the end to shorten the game)cover the spread and win going away in front of a mostly empty stadium.

If you think that is competing, you should reread the definition. This team is awful and minus a few lucky plays this game would’ve been awful.

We have some of the most fickle fans in the country. I saw a team that came to play with a fire in their bellies and went to war for a coach that they want to play for. You let Joker go now it sets the program back even further. It takes time to build a program and give this Freshman/Sophomore class two more years and we’ll be in that upper half of the SEC. You bail on the coach before then and we’ll be a lock for 14th in the conference for the next 5 years. We hired Joker to take us to the next level, not be Rich Brooks’ proxy. I’ll be the first to admit that the Rich Brooks era is the most overrated era in Kentucky football. That’s right I said it. He had some diamonds in the rough that no one else wanted that saved his ass. Joker inherited a team that had been gutted by graduation and cursed with a recruiting class full of busts. Yes, he was on the recruiting trail, but those are still the guys that BROOKS wanted. The last two recruiting classes have been guys that JOKER wanted and I like what I see. Give it time! It’s not basketball, you can’t win with all freshmen. 22-23 year old MEN beat 18-19 year old BOYS in football any day of the week. Be real people! Joker for at least two more years please!!!

    @82 – HAHA

First – How’s our JR class this year? That was Joker’s class
Second – You clearly don’t understand football. If you can’t see the inept coaching (ie letting 30 seconds run off the clock then calling timeout at the end of the half tonight) you are blind.
Third – Set us back 5 years? How exactly will that happen? These kids aren’t going anywhere and a better coach with this talent will do better.
Fourth – Just like with Florida you will continue to see these teams play flat early against UK. They see it as a week off and have no motivation. Once they see they have to try they dominate. Just look at the second halves of the last two games

This guy has had a QB competition involving Newton for 3 years. Are you kidding me Newton may be one of the worst QB’s I have ever seen. He has run off a HS All American without giving him a chance to play over Newton. He’s on the verge of running off another HS All American without giving him a chance.

6 wins year one, 5 last year 2 or less this year. We aren’t even close in SEC games. Our rival has beaten us 2 straight after their coaching change. This guy isn’t even close.

    Get a clue sir.

The painfully honest truth is the players you speak of every week are playing their harts out. The only problem is most aren’t good enough to win in the SEC. This is a big boy league and most are just not good enough. Like I’ve been saying all year Joker will be gone at years end if not earlier and he has set us back about 3 years. The true freshman you are raving about will not see the field after this year, because the coach next year will be playing Towels. If we land Patrino or a coach like him Towels will be special.

To Haha & Wildcat Blood – say what you want but I’ll be proven right no matter what happens in the next 3 years. Kentucky sticks with Joker, lets him build this program, and we start turning in 8-9 win seasons – I’ll be right. Kentucky fires Joker, brings in yet another has-been like Curry, and we start losing to Vandy, WKU, and Louisville every year & not just down years – I’ll be right. No new coach will take them into the top 20 in the next two years IDIOT because Kentucky won’t spend the $$$ to get the facilities and coach who can. Face it, Joker is as good as we’ll ever do for a LONG-TERM COACH. The only other type we can get are the has-beens and the up & comers who are looking for a quick pit-stop en route to a big-time program. FACT!

Joker is good enough to consistently get us 8-win seasons in the future if he’s given time to get his players and his system established. No one short of the most elite coaches in the country can do it in 2 years. If you’re a true Kentucky football fan you’d be happy with 8 wins year in and year out. Until the university makes football a priority and gives the program a financial face-lift, we’ll never get to the level that some of you unrealistically expect. We will never be in the same atmosphere as the Alabamas & LSUs of the football world. Not with our geographic location and not with the worst facilities in the SEC next to Vandy.

RealisticThinker, down years don’t come near the end of the contract, not if you expect to keep your job. He wasn’t given crap to work with like some coaches. HCIW means there should have been some continuity–maybe his first year we only win 3 or 4 games and slowly build up. But we have been alarmingly regressing. The talent is there to be an 8-win team, and most of us are fine with that. I just haven’t seen proof that Joker can get us there. He makes terrible in-game decisions quite often, and his staff hires are confusing at best.

He is a nice guy who was thrust into a job he wasn’t ready for and needs to seek someplace where it is a little easier to win, a smaller conference. He needed to build his resume a little. Talent without good coaching is wasted.

This was an expected loss. The WKU game is the one that is unacceptable. With a healthy Smith we at least get a FG to end the half. Although horrible clock management by Joker. After the TO you run a play that roles him (freshman) out so he can just throw it out of bounds if there is trouble. Just unbelievably dumb. Then we probably don’t have the two picks in the 2nd half to put it out of reach. I think the game is much closer.

@ #115 to say UK can’t compete with the Alabamas and LSU’s just means you haven’t watched UK football for very long. The first UK game I attended, UK BEAT LSU 35 -17. It once took a miracle hail mary play for LSU to beat UK. UK and Tim Couch beat Alabama!!!! A few years ago UK was 1 score (and Mike Harline sacking himself in the endzone) away from beating Alabama. UK DID beat #1 ranked LSU (the national champion)!!!!!!!!! The difference….coaching, not the school. Facts are facts. UK can compete with any team in the conference if our coach puts players in a position to succeed. period. Joker must go.

@ #132 Tim Couch beat a mediocre Alabama team and that 35-17 beat down was when LSU hit rock bottom as well. Yeah, we can beat those programs when they’re experiencing their darkest days. And, the upset of #1 LSU was a fluke occurance. Just like last night would have been a fluke if we beat South Carolina. Those games happen. You mean to tell me Appalachain St. can consistently beat Michigan just because they did it once??? Bad argument. Anyone who has any sense whatsoever knew I meant they couldn’t beat the elite teams in the conference. It won’t always be Alabama & LSU, but maybe Florida (like 4-5 years ago) or Tennessee (when they had Fulmer). Kentucky will never be in the elite category is what I meant and if you had an IQ higher than your age you’d know that.

136 you are right but Mumme had us going in the right direction, as did Brooks, but was derailed by letting an assistant go nuts with bad recruiting habits, C.M. Newton was not doing his job. Point is if Mumme would have not had the misstep and continued with momentum, as now with Joker faltering, who knows what could happen here. It’s an effort that has to be done for more than a few years it has to be a constant and expected, like in basketball.

Your comment is just full of the same loser mentality that is a hurdle for the football program to jump. Pathetic!

  138. Realistic Thinker
    11:12 am September 30, 2012 Permalink

#137 you’re right, let’s make this a revolving door for head coaches. It’s done wonders for us in the past. Name me another SUCCESSFUL SEC program that has had as many coaching changes as we have since 1990. Once again, unless they’re going to put some more $$$ into our facilities and hire a big name coach for big bucks, then Joker is about as good as we can hope for. He’s a hard worker, the kids respect him, he’s brought in back-to-back high level recruiting classes, and he’s loyal to UK. Give the man some time…this ain’t basketball…you can’t change a pitiful program over night.

  139. Realistic Thinker
    11:16 am September 30, 2012 Permalink

For Christ’s sake, the man starts every recruiting season down 14-0 because Kentucky produces a handful of talent and he can’t depend on in-state kids to fill out his roster. We have to go to Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina to steal kids that snub their in-state schools or get completely overlooked by them. Give him some more time and let these Freshmen and Sophomores mature and develop, then maybe we can break that cycle. I think another coaching change this soon just restarts the process and takes us back to 2010.

  140. BlueCat
    11:16 am September 30, 2012 Permalink

Joker wasn’t handed a pitiful program. Did you just start watching football here? He was handed a program that had a solid hold on at least being .500 every year and going to a toilet bowl type of bowl. We were told year after year that our recruiting was getting on par with the rest of the SEC, Joker was the one doing it, and that was wrong.

We don’t need a revolving door but we dont’ need Joker. He’s not the right guy!

    More loser talk!

  141. Realistic Thinker
    11:20 am September 30, 2012 Permalink

And for those of you that are still living in the Mumme & Brooks days, Joker has some high profile wins too. In fact he’s done two things that neither of those guys could. He broke the Tennessee streak WITHOUT A QB & he beat Spurrier. Don’t just see the negative because I’m sure to hear you guys tell it – the players won those games but Joker lost all of the other ones…give me a break!

Let’s see he beat SC because their star running back gets hurt and he beat UT at their absolute worst in recent histroy. Now beating UT, in Knoxville the year before would have been something. But oh yeah he chose to punt on 4th and 3 on UT’s 37 late in the game and we were behind. Not to mention Randall Cobb was on our side. Stuff to hang your hat on. LOL! Joker’s heart pumps loser juice!

Mumme beating LSU, in Baton Rouge, even in a down year was bigger than either of those wins. Brooks beating #1 LSU, and eventual national champion, was exponentially better. Realistic Thinker change your name to Apologist!

    Loser talk!

    Loser talk!

  144. Realistic Thinker

Oh, but I thought that Joker had driven Kentucky to an all-time low or at least that’s the way you talk. No matter how bad Tennessee was they had a team that was at least 3 touchdowns better than us last year and South Carolina’s backup RB was good enough to destroy us with the rest of the talent they had on that roster. In fact, South Carolina is a prime example of what I’ve been talking about. How long has it taken Spurrier to get them where they are now??? He didn’t exactly set the world on fire his first few years and he’s in a much better football state than Kentucky. Good things take time.
