Kentucky Escapes 10th ranked Texas A&M on Road

(AP Photo/Patric Schneider)

In a matchup between two top 10 teams and two teams atop the SEC standings, the 8th ranked Kentucky Wildcats pulled out a very tough win against the 10th ranked Aggies 70-66. After building a 14 point lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, the A&M used freshman Courtney Walker to chip away at the UK lead and cause some tense situations in the waning seconds. With 34 seconds left in the game and just one second left on the shot clock, the Cats were leading by two. Jennifer O’Neill missed a three-point shot but Bria Goss was open down low and banked in the layup to ice the game for Kentucky.

It was a balanced scoring attack for the Wildcats as A’dia Mathies led with 13 points, all in the second half. Junior guard Kastine Evans tied a season high with 12 points and some clutch long range jumpers, while DeNesha Stallworth dominated her matchup with Aggie All-American Kelsey Bone, scoring 12 points with 12 rebounds and a school record seven blocks. Kentucky come out very strong on a nationally televised game, and looked extremely composed on the road. The Cats improve to 23-3 overall and 11-2 in the SEC. UK holds sole possession of 2nd place in the conference, and are just one game behind league leader Tennessee.

The past two games, Kentucky has been steady with the ball, committing only 10 turnovers tonight and just nine last week against South Carolina. UK forced the Aggies into 18 turnovers and converted those into 29 points on offense. After giving up 27 points to Kelsey Bone the last time these teams faced off, Kentucky was able to contain the center who was plagued with cramps all night. Some questionable shot choices near the end of the game had many UK fans tense up, as O’Neill missed some long 3-pointers when Kentucky had a chance to close out the game. The Cats are currently projected as a 2 seed in Charlie Creme’s latest bracketology, and the Aggies are picked to be a 3 seed. The looming match up with Tennessee to end the season on March 3 is growing even bigger in importance each day.

The Cats are back in action on Sunday afternoon at 3 as they travel to Baton Rouge to take on a desperate bubble LSU Tigers team, a squad they beat by 12 earlier this season. Follow me on Twitter….just do it @WilderTreadKSR.

It was nice to see a team compete with pride and win in a hostile environment. I hope that the UK mens team was watching to see how it is done.

Good win by the Lady Cats! I think they might just be able to beat the men’s team. Haha.

Mitchell has built a great program in a very short period of time. Barnhart better pay the man.The only thing that has been holding UK back was the lack of talented size inside. This year we have a couple of bigs that are pretty good.I think we still have a ceiling. I still don’t know if we can beat a one seed. The womens teams are so much different as far as parity goes. Those top 4 or 5 teams each year are usually 20 points better than the next tier.

Ugh… Even the women’s team wears uniforms not of the proper colors?

What benefit does Nike really bring UK?

Great win in a tough place to play vs good team. Should not have been close actually. We missed two front ends on one/one free throws and after just 3 1st half turnovers we had like 4 in first two minutes of 2nd half. Stallworth had a great game btw. Real tough schedule to end things but off to a great start.

Congrats to UK Hoops. Great to see a team that plays hard for 40 minutes. They are relentless.

I was in attendance at the game last night. Great game and the environment was definitely tough. Got really loud in there when the Aggies went on their run late in the game. UK Hoops did what they needed to though to close it out. That was my first UK Hoops game and it was an exciting one. Enjoyed watching it as much or more than many of the men’s games this year. Coach Mitchell has done an outstanding job!

It was a great game to watch. Wish the men’s team (A.N.) would show half the hustle. We will probably be watching the women longer into March than the men. Can’t wait for the march 3rd tenn game. Place will be rovking

The whole “pink” thing should be expired by now. Women’s sports have enough of a time getting taken seriously – pink uni’s aint helping! No – didn’t help the nfl either!

Been following Mr. Mitchell’s teams now for the last 3 years & he is learning very quickly.

UK came from out of nowhere to get to the Elite 8, but lost to a tough Oklahoma team with a strong center.
He has solved that problem & continues to recruit great talent.
Would not be surprised if UK becomes one of the Elite teams in the next few years.
