Kentucky drops out of AP poll for the first time under Calipari

Coach Cal is not impressed.
Kentucky is unranked in this week’s AP college basketball poll for the first time in the John Calipari era. The Cats dropped from 8th to 26th in the voting after losses to Notre Dame and Baylor last week. It’s the largest drop in the AP rankings since the poll went to 25 teams in 1990.
Kentucky stuck around in the USA Today Coaches’ poll at No. 19.
Wakeup call.

That damn Tubby caused this, damn Tubby!
Right where they belong.
I think its important to not pannick. I think any reasonable UK fan would look at this year as a season like the Brandon Knight team where they lost 10 games. I think that will happen with this team, they’ll lose 10 games but then they’ll get it rolling and it will be fun again. If that doesn’t happen then look at it this way, UK will have a lot of players returning and we’ll be even more loaded for next year and will be a shoe-in for the Championship.
If Coach Cal is not impressed, why is the picture named “cal-impressed”? (hover over pic)
honestly after seeing the way our team performed this past week…. we still may be ranked to high!
LawnOrder, Tubby would have never had these players and never would have won another title…Thats the truth!
Cal will be ok but I dont know about these players, if they dont come around I could almost see some players leaving because Cal wont stand for this type of play forever!
I just think it’s important for fans, players, and coaches alike to not panic. This team is going to be fine; it’s just taking them a little longer to find themselves than the past three teams. We have four “get-it-together” games before we play Louisville and Siva goes 0-5 in his career against UK.
Best motivation ever!
It’s all George W.’s fault!!
It’s not W’s fault; if it were we would be ranked 126. Now it may be Tubby’s fault. I still think we win the NC. Anyone that doubts Coach Cal should have their head examined.
This team is good. It’s just not great right now. As for the AP voters, they have had it out for Cal and have cried “you can’t win with one and done” bull****. Now that they were proved completely wrong last year, they have to claim “that even though you can win one year, you can’t keep doing it…” We’ll Cal won’t let that stop him, and as UK fans, we shouldn’t let it stop us from believing this team is a legitimate title contender.
The amount of illiteracy on this forum is disturbing. #3—“pannick”–really?
In Cal we trust. These guys will figure it out in enero y febrero.
Lets not forget we won a national chmp. last year, so what if we lose some games this year. Next year we will back in the final 4, lets relax and have some fun this year. Watch the team and yell for them but if we lose a few its all ok. Calm down.
No one tell the players, it might damage their psyches…
This is’t too negative is it, I mean it won’t make them delete their Twitter accounts will it?
Well said, Drew “Wake Up Call.”
We have a long run ahead of us and I don’t doubt that Cal will get the team fixed.
LOL#12. As much as I hate to watch the Cats lose, I’m not worried about it and I still won’t be worried about it after the Lville game. I’ll be worried at the end of January if we aren’t smashing other teams though.
It’s called ‘complacency’. Easy to see, hard to correct. Good luck Coach Cal with this one.
#6 Jim G.: I couldnt agree with you more on your second point. My biggest concern right now is that this team will lose any identity it might have and that players will start to “crack” under these circumstances. If the coaching staff can’t keep these players psycologically focused and fired up all the running, drills and yelling in proactice is worthless.
2 – Yeah, I’m not going to “pannick”. LOL
A true fan is one who refrains from name calling, personal insults, & has patience when their team is not performing well. So out of Big Blue Nation…what is it…like a hundred of us now?
Sad stuff.
Who cares what they are ranked. This is a very average team. Cal and his boys won a national championship last year. Cut him some slack. This team will get better and will be a tough team to beat at the end of the season. They may not reach a Final 4 — or even an Elite 8 — but who cares? They cut down the nets just 7 months ago. Next year, they will be awesome again. I could care less about how high they are ranked and only care about watching this team try to piece things together. I’m fully confident they will to some degree.
I think at the end of the year in March and April, this will be one of the most dominant teams in not only UK, but college basketball history.
BBN is truly spoiled, not just by last year’s team or Cal’s crazy recruiting classes, but things like a team that was largely written off (tsk, tsk) making it to the Final Four. This team is still the second most talented team Cal has had…
Odd the North Carolina has remained in after beatdowns to both IU and Butler. Hmm.
A few gimme games to regroup, then a knockout blow to Prick Latino’s girls. Who’s in?
Where we are this year so far should not be a surprise. I haven’t seen may programs lose what we did last year and come out top 5. We were over rated! But we do have talent on this team and it will take Coach Cal, with his staff, to blend them to compete. Having said that, our young guys need to start playing as a team instead of playing as “the hero”.
The biggest concern is that our experienced guys are not good enough to lead. At least based on what they’re showing on the court.
Many teams all around the nation who, in recent years, have been contenders are having some rough times. You cannot be awesome every year. It just doesn’t happen. North Carolina, Marquette, West Virginia, Florida State, UCLA, Texas, etc. are all not doing well so far.
This team will be okay. Kills me how folks are reacting. They are freshmen for crying out loud who have played six games! I was more upset from the comment that was made during the broadcast about playing cupcake teams than anything else. I guess Maryland, Duke, Baylor and Notre Dame are all cupcakes.
23 — Absolutely not true. Second most talented team? Are you crazy? Please explain that one.
I think that UK and Calipari are (were) on such a high that the current players felt they had “arrived” when they got to UK. Based on the success of the last few years and the number of NBA draft picks, I think there may have been a lot of swag. In other words, the players were feeling overconfident just based on the fact they were chosen to come to UK. The problem is that the “swag” in fact was earned by the previous players based on their success and hard work. The current players are just now learning that nothing is entitled to them and they have to earn the wins just like their predecessors. Just my 2 cents. I sure their eyes have been opened now and we’ll see how they respond.
Glad to see people saying don’t panic. It’s the truth. We are fine. If anyone gives u crap (especially little brother) just hold up 8 fingers. Enough said.. Lets watch this team grow and start bonding on and off the court. They’ll get it together, we’ll be a tough out in march thats for sure… And u never know what may happen in the tourney (kinda like two years ago)…. GO CATS BABY!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Jim G. I know, I know. I actually liked Tubby a lot, but I’ve lost my job and I’m
stuck at home. My wife left me for a younger man, and my kids are all grown.
I really don’t know what to do with myself so I just sit around typing “Tubby,
Tubby, Tubby” cause that’s my idea of fun right now. SOSUMI.
16 – crawler, I’m sort of like you. Except, I am concerned that we aren’t getting any better. Our best game against a quality team was probably Dook. Sure we play well against cup cakes but 50 and 55 points respectively against our last two opponents is worrisome. Earlier in the year, I posted that we looked as if we will have problems finding scorers. Hopefully that won’t be correct in the long term but for now it does seem as if we are challenged in that area.
I do hope this team can get it together but I am beginning to have some pause. They might just be a sweet 16 calibre team.
Should we be upset with Coach CAL about this or should we accept a losing team like this? I still support Cal, but I’m not OK with a loser just because we won a title last year. Its not looking good for the tournament this year if we are losing to teams like Notre Dame and Baylor.
I was hopping to cope with my depression from watching UK football by watching UK basketball. I am at a all time low
Babies, must learn to CRAWL before they WALK!
33 — I would reserve judgment until after the Christmas break to determine if this team is improving. Cal has said it before that his teams improve the most when they practice two and sometimes three times a day during the Christmas break.
28, we’re 4-3, meaning we’ve played 7 games
One thing that gives me great optimism was the ease that I saw Harrow get into the middle against Baylor. It was so easy for him to do this. From this position he has a ton of options; all deadly for our opponent. I expect Cal to hand the keys to Harrow and when he does things are going to be much different.
Probably the best thing that could’ve happened to us.
Brandon Knight’s team lost six away games including bad losses (such as the one to Arkanasas) before finding their identity and beating UNC and Ohio State on the way to the final four. This team just doesn’t have their identify either individually or corporately yet. The key is Harrow holding his own at point guard so that everyone is then playing their natural position (Noel, Wiltjer, Poy, AG, Harrow). Mays/Willie/Polson off the bench.
Never thought I would see the day where UK basketball was unranked and Tubby was 8-1 in the Top 25. Hope the results this year aren’t as bad as the last year of CBC Era.
34 — You just don’t get it man. The boys have three and a half months until the tournament and you are calling them a “losing team”? I guess we should just fire Cal right now according to you. Seriously buddy, you have a lot to learn about college basketball.
41 — I totally remember that. Some of these fans don’t though because they can only remember the games last week. Idiots I tell ‘ya!!!
Duke U: 100+ weeks in TOP 25
And Counting.
#32 hey you’re exactly correct, cept for the liking Tubby, and the job loss and stuck at home bit, and the kids grown thing, oh and the wife left for younger man stuff.
45 — Who cares? Kentucky is the 2012 national champs. Duke lost to Lehigh in the first round.
For the dissenters: this is a forum where all reasonable opinions are welcome; some agree, some don’t.
But, did you ever listen to John Calipari? He literally laughed at the idea that UK was ranked AT ALL when we were in the top 5. He TOLD us they are the only team without a returning starter, that we are the youngest team in America and that Nerlens is not close to AD yet. He told us they would struggle, they would lose games but he liked them and they would improve and grow.
Is there something about all that the negative commenters missed?
Cal will get these highly talented but raw individuals to play together. He is so right that by the looks of it so far it is going to take longer than we would prefer.
Just a suggestion: embrace the fact that UK is the gold standard once again, enjoy the process of this team becoming whatever they will be and celebrate that we have a coach with the talent and the coaching ability to bring out the very best in every single player that wears the Blue and White.
GO KITTENS!
it’s interesting, as you note, that the coaches kept them in the Top 25. They know what’s coming in March. Who cares what the AP/writers think? Most of those clowns hate UK and Cal. Go Cats!
I’m shutting down @kysportsradio.
All that matters now is winning the rest of the games in December.
After watching the lineups that play the best together in the past two games I personally feel the starters should be
PG-Harrow
G-Goodwin
G-Mays
F-Poythress
F/C-Noel
50. Now, that is FUNNY!
How do you cure stupid? Stop reading KSR threads.
Delk— all that matters is what you’ve done recently.
Villanova is 1985 champions. Who cares?
The rest of AMERICA IS GRINNING b/c CALIPARI’s CHICKENS COMING HOME TO ROOST
The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The Mayans knew this would happen! —- everybody calm down. #42 – This is so far removed from what happened in the Billy Clyde era it is not even comparable. As Kentucky fans under Coach Cal, we really don’t know what adversity is, except for the brief period of conference play with the 2010-2011 squad. We are spoiled. We had one of the best teams a generation will ever see in last year’s team. It was December 1st when we lost to Baylor. Let’s revisit this in February. In Cal we Trust.
This team may be an example of the Dark Side of the #KentuckyEffect. You don’t turn into a quality basketball team simply by showing up here on campus. It takes a lot of hard work. Hopefully this will serve as a wake up call for the guys, and they will realize that they still have to listen to the coaches and work their tails off every day and every minute of every game.
Hey Cal, here’s a thought: how about bringing in AD, MKG and Darius to help the guys understand how hard they worked last year to become champs.
Go get it fellas!
@Delk for 3, Well…I’m sure you’re not comparing them to Knight’s class which started with him as #6 overall. So we are really only comparing them to Wall(1),Cousins(2),Orton(22-haha,bust),Bledsoe(24). So you have Noel(2), Poythress(8), Goodwin(14), Cauley-Stein(40). We all know Orton was overrated. And I bet you’d agree that WCS is underrated. I would take these four over that four any day.
I am the doctor.
This team has to hate to lose. That’s when they will start improving.
Actually, if Bogans hadn’t hurt his leg, we would have won the whole thing that year! So there!
No big deal. These new guys were just suffering from getting to start at the top of the mountain without having to work to get to the top. That made it necessary to get knocked off so they can know what it feels like. Now, we should begin to finally see improvement.
42 – Sad But True – Its sad that you have already given up on this team. This team might not make the tournament this year, but how could you post these things on December 3rd with a young team. How do you know what this team will look like in SEC play? Stop being so spoiled and just support this team. Worst case scenario we miss the tournament this year, but hey we won a title last year and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we are better in March.
Three major opportunities in Louisville, Florida, and Missouri, as far as the resume goes…
If this team doesn’t make the tourney, I’ll eat Tom Crean’s gum off the floor.
make em run after they rebound and pass it ahead…it is called Adolph’s fast break…
How about this team:
#2
Anthony Davis

Plus Kyle Wiltjer at #22??????
It’s clear that Cal won the National Championship with Billy Gillispie’s players.
You dont want to play this team come March, just saying 🙂
67-68, we were talking about the SECOND most talented of Cal’s classes so…?????? I’ll leave you to your “D’oh!” moment.
39) I notice that, too. He missed a couple bunnies in there, but he also hit WCS with a couple lobs and Noel followed one of the misses with a dunk. This should happen more and more as Harrow gets more PT. I’m not hitting the panic button yet
So now they have something to prove. That’s not a bad thing.
I’m not worried about this year, We won it last year and will
be the favorite to win it next year. Whatever they accomplish
this year will be icing on the cake.
Two quotes from Calipari have bothered me this season.
1) “They’re[Duke] flopping all over the place” — then in the post-game press conference, he said “I said that? Can’t you guys take a joke?” I mean, OWN IT Cal, own it.
2) “That’s what happens when you have a bunch of freshmen out there.” …. YA THINK?
75 – The first quote wasn’t CAL’s finest moment, but Duke does flop and they should be able to take a joke. The second quote shouldn’t bother you though. Everybody knew this was a rebuilding year and that we wouldn’t be that good. Some thought it was just coach-speak or CAL-speak when he said we werent’ that good, but he meant it.
Wheak.
Kentucky’s one and done has a Wheakness….being exosed.
Perhaps, they will improve and make a run into the NCAA sweet 16 – if they can win enough games to get a bid.
They’re vulnerable; no real stars; lacking leadership.
Wheak.
On his blog, Bozich says Cal expected Teague to stay and he thought he would get Shabazz. He thinks that is why we are where we are right now, without a PG.
Congrats on breaking the record..when do the t-shirt go onsale
Don’t worry, Kentucky still exists… But ONLY IN LOUISVILLE! BWahahahaha
I hope all of you so called fans please turn in your lower arena tickets. If this team is such a BUST. I WILL take them off your hands. Now and for years to come. I Do Believe in Cal and His Guys.
As bad as we are right now, going from #8 all the way to unranked is a bit ridiculous. Not sure i’ve seen a team ranked in the top 10 fall out of the rankings deserved or not.
meh…
Was ranked to high to begin with, that was the media plan, rank them high and when they fail they will fail hard. And the B knight team finished their season 28-9 they didn’t lose 10 games.
fall
I hope they don’t even make the tourney
