Kentucky comeback falls just short 75-68

(Ehh, not quite, ESPN)

Is it really only November? That game had a post-season feel from the start. Sparked by a 9-0 run late in the 2nd half, the young Kentucky Wildcats nearly climbed back into it to take the game from a veteran Duke squad. Kentucky found themselves trailing by 14 late in the game, seemingly on the verge of a lopsided finish. The Alex Poythress we’ve been waiting to see was the catalyst for Kentucky’s late run, which came up just short after pulling within 3 points. On a crucial late game possession with Kentucky down 5 and needing a basket, Archie Goodwin was called for a travel. Duke was then able to essentially ice the game from the free throw line. The final margin was 75-68 in favor of the Blue Devils. Seth Curry was virtually unstoppable on the night for the Blue Devils, leading all scorers with 23 points. Alex Poythress paced Kentucky with 20 points and 8 rebounds.

Although Kentucky came up short, the fight this team put up to claw back into the game, along with the emergence of Alex Poythress, will be areas to build on moving forward.

Stay tuned for more on the game later…

Noel plays so damn hard, with no regard for his own well-being. The fact that he basically spent the whole game fighting with Plumlee was very impressive. The kids got balls that drag the court. Same can’t be said for the Duke and U of L trolls that plague this site.

My 2 cents- Alex and Nerlens are beasts. Archie is super talented, but doesn’t play very smart. No PG. Wiltjer is just going to have to shoot with someone in his face-can’t get separation. On O and D we mistime our jumps (rebounding/defending) as bad as any team I can remember..Cal and co. will work out many of the flaws and skie’s the limit.

    A couple quick take aways:

    1. How worthless do Duke trolls have to be to find this site and then post on it? Remember Norfolk St? Because I remember us winning the title.

    2. We played without Ryan Harrow and still looked okay. PG is the most important position in the dribble drive offense.

    3. Alex, Archie, and Nerlens are going to be just fine. As Jason Smith tweeted “Dickie V said this team will be dangerous in February, they’re dangerous now.”

Hate the loss but they learned and absent a few mistakes that can be chalked up to freshman and lack of chemistry looked like a team that will be better in the long run and have a much higher ceiling.

6 — I agree. This team is far from perfect, and they will lose games (get used to it). The thing is, I saw a level of play at the end of the game that allowed me to believe this team can really be good eventually. When their back was to the wall, they actually started to fight. Unfortunately it took them to be down 14 points to start fighting, but we saw that they could collectively play very hard. We hadn’t really seen that up to that point and I was kind of worried for a while. What we saw in those last eight minutes was something to really be encouraged about. Poythress played like a monster, Noel has more heart than anyone, and Goodwin can play with reckless abandon. Duke really took Kyle Wiltjer out of the game with their defense on him and we really need for Cal to set up some plays to get him three-point looks. He’s too good of shooter for us to not make a concerted effort for him to get his shots.

Let’s face it. We were beat by a better team tonight. That stated, our guys showed flashes of brilliance mixed in with some pretty sorry play. I think that the guys realized they have to play all-out for the entire game or else they get beat. I think they saw the high level they can play at and now have a standard set for how they need to play from here on out. I’m proud of the fight these guys showed. Sure, there are some concerns but we saw what makes Poythress, Noel, and Goodwin great. We just need the other guys to step it up and we’ll be a formidable force come March. Big-time learning lesson tonight. Don’t look at it more than that.

Our defense is already pretty good, and should be great before the new year. Offense will take longer against good teams, maybe quite a bit longer if Harrow doesn’t pan out, but I think Cal will figure something out. Rebounding and the transition game should come around. I’m pleased with where the team is right now. There was a stretch in the first half when they looked very tough to try to score against. Look for three or four games with both teams in the 50s this year.

  56. Wildcatsteeler
    12:12 am November 14, 2012 Permalink

Polson should have started this game. Take that Mo from last game and continue to build his confidence. He earned it anyway. Leave Goodwin at 2 and sub in Mays for Polson or Goodwin depending. Bad coaching imo. We’re gonna need Polson and this was the chance to say you did it, you deserve it, you are in when our main PG is out. Yea, he got beat by Curry twice but that was after sitting on the bench for over 8 mins to start the 2nd half. Mays got beat by him over and over also. Big time missed opportunity to further develop him there.

  57. Hicks
    12:13 am November 14, 2012 Permalink

We had our worst defender on the floor guarding the kid with 20 points at the end of the game. Mays gave up so many points tonight. There were so many adjustments and obvious things that should have been corrected and never were. I won’t second guess Cal but you have to realize Mays couldn’t guard the kid. You’ve got to realize if Nerlens is going to try to block every shot then somebody has to be designated to pick up his man. And let’s just get it out of the way, Archie isn’t a point and it hurts his offensive game when you make him play it. If you send 3 guys to guard Plumlee in the post you’ve already lost. All they want to do is shoot 3’s and we’re triple teaming a guy who has no offensive game on his own unless you throw it to him 2 feet from the basket. This team needs Cal to have his best coaching year ever because there is a ton of talent but there are some glaring holes that have to be hidden or fixed soon and they weren’t tonight.

Archie was supposed to kick it back out to the top instead of forcing it in. You can read cals lips when he yelled at him.Had he done that wiltjer would have had two different attempts at threes to tie or go ahead. Bet polson would have executed.

I am not pleased with the outcome, but I am definitely pleased with the performance and growth I saw from these young players in the last 10 minutes of the game. We went down 14 points, and the young men did not panic. In fact, they seemed to rise to the occasion. Poythress was a monster tonight, and the difference between Noel’s game tonight versus the Maryland game was night and day. While I was disappointed with Wiltjer’s performance on the offensive end tonight, I will say that he looked pretty solid on defense. Further, his lack of offense can be directly attributed to the fact that he did not look for his shot very often tonight, and I believe a lot of his confidence comes down to the first couple of shots he takes. I think that he is one of those guys that we will need to get going early if we expect him to stay involved on the offensive end. Maybe tonight’s game has a different outcome if Harrow is healthy and on his game, but I seriously doubt it. We were outplayed tonight by a (currently) better and more experienced team. I am actually pleased with the growth that I witnessed tonight, albeit at the expense of Puke. Go Cats!

    39. UK has had championships under 5 coaches. That is more than Duke has won period. UK was UK before Cal, and UK will be UK after he leaves. What is Duke without Coach K? They are tied together like PB&J at this point, and Duke wasn’t really what it is before he came along. He will retire eventually. People get old and die. Can Duke be a long-standing program without him, or will they fade into history?

I predict a few interesting coaching searches in the next five or so years. We might be one of them. I doubt Cal goes to the NBA because his method doesn’t work with guys who are already millionaires. He might get tired though. Pitino might fall apart at the seams. Roy already has had to deal with health issues, hasn’t he? Coach K might want to join ESPN sometime in the next decade.

I think every time down the floor Noel needs to touch it on the block. Force help to come then kick out to Wiltjer and Mays. Wiltjer struggles to create his own shot and that is the best way to really do that is by playing inside-out.

Unfortunately a lot of the ridiculous flop charges in the first half took us out of our rhythm. In the second half the guys looked a lot more hesitant to drive. Also, I swear Plumlee just played the first 8 foul collegiate game.

We made a lot of mental mistakes and it was obvious we were playing without a point guard… but we found a way to claw back and make it a game at the end. Unfortunately it was another freshman mistake that kept us from getting it back down to 2 points but its November and that stuff will happen.

There is ZERO chance Wiltjer goes pro after this year, so anyone who was saying that can go ahead and stop now.

Goodwin still needs to get under control but he does more good than bad and his jumper keeps looking better and better.

Poythress will eventually be a monster. Mashburn Junior in my opinion.

WCS looked like a freshman for the first time. He didn’t factor at all but in a month or 2 he and Noel will both be scary good. Only problem is when they both play the offense is very very limited. Neither one of them can do anything when they’re ten feet away from the basket.

Im obviously an IU fan, but very impressed with Kentucky tonight. The consistency will come, but very much a traditional UK team in that a 15-0 run is always on the verge of happening. It’s an absolute athletic freakshow out there and this loss is only going to help. Losing always sucks and it’s obvious this group of freshman is going to struggle at times, but good lord is the talent there. I’d absolutely love to see a matchup with IU – it’d be unbelievably entertaining and would love to see IU deal with the one team that is clearly more athletic than them. Maybe we’ll get it in March…

Alex was better but I would not say the Alex we want to see….he had 3 def rebounds which will not win us big games. Still alot to be encouraged about with these guys. We had Archie out of position, he is a wing player, no Harrow, puke played physical and shot well and we only lose by 7. Had a chance with like 2 plus minutes to cut it to 1 and failed or who knows. These kids are tough and like I said before these guys will be hard to beat in the tourney. Harrow and Alex will be the keys. Alex is already showing positive signs and hopefully Harrow will be what we need him to be…tough on D, take care of ball, contribute some points and make good decisions on passes. All this comes together, I think it will, we will be fine.

Ask me 3 things were the game and flopping wasnt one albeit ridiculous.

    1. Coach Cal ruining the chemistry going twin towers when Plumlee gets his 4th.
    2. Down 3, 3 to play Mays jacking a 3 give feet behind NBA line.
    3. Goodwin out of control as usual traveling while down three.

Those were the game, no excuses. Big fan of Noel add Poythress.

    85. I was just countering the argument that when Cal leaves UK won’t be good anymore like Will S. hinted at. His argument actually applies more to Duke. Will’s argument was more in general, not tonight specific.

I quite miss playing Duke on a regular basis. A decade is way too long when it used to be often.

First, mad respect to Calipari for calling out Duke for flopping on national TV! That may be the *new* greatest moment in the history of the program! 😉 Second, I think you have to be pleased with the *overall* improvements since the Maryland game Friday night. Some things are probably never going to change (Wiltjer on defense, for example) but Noel played better and that Poythress guy…..man, he can ball! Who knew?!? 😉 The fact that it was Duke aside, for their second real game of the season, I don’t know how you could be terribly unhappy with that performance. Seth Curry felt like Devan Downey from a couple of years ago. Like he could have closed his eyes and thrown the ball back over his head and it STILL would have gone in. It seems very ironic that the feels started to fall off as soon as Plumley went out in the second half of the game. Shouldn’t that have been a *good* thing?!? Oh well. Regardless, it was a good showing for these young guys and has to leave you feeling excited for what they’re going to look like in March. I hope Harrow gets over whatever is wrong with him, soon.

50/50 calls in the first half were especially outrageous. Not only that, the phantom timeout called by the refs with about 15:00 min to go in the first half to “wipe” the floor conveniently came when the cats were on a 7-0 run and had sprinted out to a 5 point lead. We lost the momentum after that. I am not trying to say that such trivial things made the difference between a W or a L tonight, but I do wonder if we would have received the same convenient whistle if Duke had been on a run. Good lesson learned by our guys tonight…you cannot expect any help from the refs; take it out of their hands; play the entire game like you did the last 10 minutes (and just hope to hell the other team doesnt shoot 100% during said period)

Sports Fan, I think I might be able to help you… hear me out. You see, people that are self-proclaimed fans of sport enjoy exciting plays (things like alley-oop dunks, put-back slams, and transition baskets). People that enjoy watching basketball played like it was circa 1950 like seeing flop plays, clock grinding, high free throw percentages, and final scores in the 60’s. So you see, you’re actually not a sports fan! In fact, you’re a fan of watching mediocre uppersclassmen play basketball in a fashion that is both boring and without post-season reliability. These are the traits of a Duke fan, which as anyone knows has little to do with what the majority of the population considers a sports fan.
