Kentucky beats Northwood (the Florida one), 93-61

5-foot-2 Tyrone Davis is a new KSR favorite.

Kentucky’s first exhibition is in the books with a 93-61 victory over the Seahawks of Northwood (Fla.). Archie Goodwin led the way with 22 points followed by Nerlens Noel’s 17. Three other Wildcats scored in double figures.

We’ll have more from the game and Coach Cal’s press conference in just a bit.

Go Cats?

I’m not seeing Poythress at Small Forward. I think we are best when he is playing his natural spot.

Better defense in 2nd half. We showed flashes of what will be and overall about what I expected for the 1st time out (turnovers included).

    – Mays is on a fast track to bing my favorite player this year.
    – Goodwin uses his body really well.
    – WCS runs really well for a big man, he’s not nearly as awkward in his body as many 7-footers seem to be.
    – Harrow is exciting but could use some work on decision making.
    – On that note, the whole team might benefit from looking before they make a pass, but I did like the passing in the paint. Even though a number of those didn’t work out, once these boys have some more chemistry those types of plays will result in easy points.
    – On defense, the team is very active, but doesn’t always play smart, and a good defensive possession was occasionally wasted when the defender would leave his feet on a pump fake, way to many of those.

Very excited about this season! By the end of the year I wouldn’t bet against them!

84 WHAS radio for postgame show.

18 – If you mean Matt’s postgame show, you can get it on IHeart 630 but not until after the official IMG post game show is over. The IMG contract makes WLAP mute the official pre and post game shows, but Matt’s pre pre game show and post post game shows can be heard on IHeart WLAP630 or WHAS840.

I take it all back. I’ve been skeptical about whether this team would be really good before 2013 rolls around. Even though they were sloppy tonight on both sides of the ball, I’m stunned by the athleticism. Speed and jumping erased a lot of errors. As the Cats learn to play together, they’re going to be amazing.

Harrow had 5 assists, 2 turnovers, 4 steals, 5-9 from the field, and 5/6 from the line. He played fine. What more do you want?

This team will scrap. They will defend the basket as well as any team Cal’s had. They will have a ton of dunks. They will miss a lot of free throws. They will lose some games. However, by season’s end they will be right there and compete for #9. Not sure if they have the shooters and creators we are used to seeing, and it will be ugly at times. But man o’ man….will they ever defend.

26- don’t forget Davis had 6 points in the first exhibition game last year.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this team develops…..this will probably be the biggest team we have ever fielded, but spacing and toughness are going to be the key to how far they go.

Gave up 20 off rebounds to this team, that would be 30 plus against a decent team and that team will put more of them back in. That is the only major concern from this game.
