Kentucky basketball makes “The Newsroom”

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t watched last night’s “The Newsroom” and plan to, consider skipping this post, as it will include minor spoilers.

One of the main story lines of HBO’s “The Newsroom” this season has been “Operation Genoa,” a story the crew is chasing about the United States using chemical weapons on civilians. In last night’s episode, the gang went to Silver Springs, Maryland to talk to retired Marine general Stanislaus Stomtonovich, who is kind of a kook, watching basketball throughout the meeting (“March Madness, the best sporting event on Earth,” he coos), but agrees to confirm the story on camera anonymously.

When they return for filming a few days later, Stomtonovich refuses to turn off the television, which is showing the UK/Florida game from 2012. The game plays in the corner of the segment they film, and when one of the producers complains about it, Jerry Dantana, the lead guy on the story, says they will edit it out later.

During filming, Stomtonovich doesn’t confirm what he promised to, framing the use of chemical weapons as a hypothetical instead. However, before showing the clip to his bosses, Dantana decides to edit the tape to make it sound like Stomtonovich did confirm the use of sarin gas on civilians. Big mistake. He even edits the “raw footage,” which you can tell by how the UK/Florida game in the top left corner jumps. Dead giveaway.

Could the UK/Florida game be the smoking gun that gets “The Newsroom” crew in trouble?

That is not UK vs. Florida from last season. You can tell because the Rupp floor still has the old SEC logo near the free throw line. Dead give a way. That game is older, not that it matters lol.

It’s a real weird timeline, because he’s right, would have to be the 12 game, but Florida came to Rupp in Feb that season. Plus the point in the show is still before the Obama/Romney election.

It would be interesting from a Cat’s fan perspective to know why of all the games they could have chose (and UK playing at Rupp is not a March Madness game anyways) why they chose UK.

I think its the Kentucky Effect.

If I were to guess, a significant % of people watching Newsroom aren’t college basketball fans (I could be wrong – who knows) but going with a “brand name” program will help – especially if it turns out they use the video of the game to determine the editing jumps like suggested.

Also, the UK logo at center court had a black outline, and it’s been blue for at least seven or eight years now. The “Rupp Arena” logo near the benches was also the old one.

  9. Newsroom is GREAT show!!

Looks like Joe Crawford in the bottom of the screen in the first pic if you zoom in. He always wore t-shirts underneath his jersey and hiked his socks up. Can’t tell who the opponent is though. Uniforms are too dark. But we’ve scored 15 points with 11 mins to go in the first half.

If you’ve seen the preview for next week you know that Charlie said by 1005 he knew none of it was true. This is why they have been talking to the lawyers.

As a person who has edited video for a living I am surprised that wasn’t taken care of. It’s very easy to mask the video on the tv and replace it so that there won’t be any hiccups. Sloppy work.

It’s UK vs Florida March 9, 2008, You can tell it is in the dark days of Billy G because there are very few videos but you can see from this video (as horrible as it may be) that both the Jerseys of UK & Florida are right and the old SEC logos are still there.
Florida has only wore the black jerseys a hand full of times.
