What is happening at Cliff Hagan stadium is truly remarkable. The Kentucky baseball team, once a program grounded in futility in the best conference in the land for its sport (joining the football team), has been resurrected, almost over night. With their win last Sunday against the mighty Mississippi St Bulldogs, the Cats put down the ghost of Will Clark and clinched at least a share of the SEC East title. In addition, they have a two game lead on Alabama going into the last three game series of the year. If they can win two of the three, they are guaranteed an SEC regular season title….an unheard of accomplishment.
This has truly been a remarkable season for the Bat Cats and the turnaround of this program…..following on the heels of similar turnarounds by women’s basketball and volleyball, shows that the leadership of Mitch Barnhart is paying dividends. Many questioned his most publicized hire, that of Rich Brooks, but he has completely upgraded the entire athletics department and the baseball team’s success began with the hire of its new coach.
We will be covering the SEC baseball tournament for those of you that wondered….primarily because brackets are involved….something that would get me to watch almost anything.
