Keep Calm #BBN

twins sign

Watching Rupp turn Red has been very painful for the Big Blue Nation. “Russ Arena” chants will cause the ears to bleed. Thankfully, one great Kentucky fan in the crowd revealed the light at the end of the dark tunnel. During the 2nd half this banner was unfurled at Rupp Arena.

Billy Reed’s facebook tonite I have followed UK since I was very young. I covered Coach Rupp’s last 12 teams for one publication or another. I consider many UK greats to be among my good friends. I co-authored Cawood Ledford’s book. I just don’t see how anybody who cares about education and our state’s image can endorse the way Calipari has turned UK into little more than an NBA development program. I felt that way last year, I feel that way this year, and I’ll feel that way next year. UK is the flagship university in a state known for poor education. The basketball team is the flagship university’s most visible symbol. It should not be asking too much for UK basketball to emphasize education the way they do at North Carolina, Indiana, Michigan, and other flagship universities

Was never a Billy Reed fan – but he’s ABSOLUTELY correct on this.

Statistics show that nearly 50 percent of NBA players are broke five years after their playing days are over. If Cal truly is concerned about his ‘players’ and their best interest – he would talk to them like a father who loves his sons and who is concerned about the long-term well being.

Instead – Cal simply tries to get these kids to the league so he can build his reputation as a shortcut to millions.

More than anyone – I blame Barnhart and the UK administration for the Gillispie hire, which left them so desperate that they were willing to forfeit any and all integrity in hiring Cal in the first place.

And it’s also sad that so many in BBN have fallen hook, line and sinker for Cal’s sales pitch. UK has now had to settle for the NIT twice in the last five years. Yet Cal has a bunch of 17-18 year old kids coming in for 8 months next year adn BBN has bought his spin job.

Meanwhile – schools who actually take the student-athlete concept seriously – are right now competing for the 2013 NCAA title. It can be done the right way.

It’s not that players who excel can’t go pro. It’s that Kentucky is a college basketball program whose coach has explicitly said his strategy is to get players to the NBA as soon as possible. That makes UK less of a college program and more of a staging area for the NBA.

As a lifelong UK fan – I’m used to folks around America hating UK because they’re jealous of success – but with Cal – UK has willingly given them a legitimate reason to look unfavorably upon the program because it openly and brazenly makes a mockery of the concept of ‘student-athlete’

Coach calipari has said the uk program is a “players first” program not a program designed to get players to the nba. There is a difference. He is also not doing anything unethical or against the rules as they stand. He is just recruiting the best players. Who would refuse the players calipari recruits for the kentucky program?

    11:08 pm March 23, 2013 Permalink

They’ll always hate us, so what is the point in trying to turn one another on our coach? Some kids dreams and goals are to be in the NBA and for your “statistical” liking, the 5 or 6 players that do get drafted, are 5 or 6 out of the 30,000 kids that attend the university, all working toward different ambitions, different goals. Who are you to say what these kids should and shouldn’t want? What they should and shouldn’t do with their lives? But yes, lets turn these talented young people away and towards another university that may or may not be able to help them reach their goals as well as UK can. Because that would be more beneficial for them.

  29. CarolinaCatFan
    11:11 pm March 23, 2013 Permalink

25 – This isn’t an ethics issue. Even if it was don’t blame Cal, blame the NBA for the “unethical” rule. If a kid has an opportunity to earn millions of dollars even if it’s only for a couple of years it’s wrong to try to keep them from doing it. Sure they may blow it all in several years, but there’s plenty of guys that stayed for 4 years of college and then went to the NBA that have met the same fate. I’ve got a 4 year degree and a Master’s and I’ll probably never make $1million a year. At the end of the day it’s the athlete’s responsibility to be able to handle his finances. I’m sorry your Utopian image of the student athlete has been crushed, but let me fill you in on a little secret from someone who competed and coached at the collegiate level. This hasnt been about educating kids for the past 20 years if not longer. The NCAA and its member universities are about one thing – money. The coaches are about winning and getting the best players possible. Education is simply the means to keeping their players eligible. It’s basically an inconvenience. Don’t fool yourself into believing D-1 football or basketball is anything else. If you want the more pure traditional college model go root for a D-2 or D-3 school. Your problem is that you argue for a concept that doesnt exist anymore. Duke, UNC, Kansas, and UCLA all have kids that have and will leave after 1 year. Just look and see what a team full of freshmen that aren’t good enough to go pro after 1 year gets you- a trip to the NIT. I don’t pull for UK because I care about what kind of degrees these guys are pursuing. I pull for UK because it is the greatest college basketball program in the nation. Times have changed and in order to stay on top you’ve got to have these guys. I’ll gladly take guys like MKG, Anthony Davis, and Noel for 1 year. Doesn’t make them less of a member of BBN than someone who stayed for 4 years and it doesn’t make me any less of a fan than you.

Why oh why did you have to say no?

  36. Rae

Oldschool, if these players were actually studying useful things, you may have a point. Athletes have traditionally taken the easiest majors offered. Those majors are practically useless now without Master’s degrees. Why should a guy give up millions to get a useless degree when he can come back to school after his 5-10 years are over and get his useless degree then (or maybe he would be wise enough at that point to study something useful.)

What Cal needs to do is devise a first-year program of study for all incoming recruits including classes on basic public speaking, finances, etc. If they choose to continue school, they can choose a major. If they go pro, they have a solid economic foundation to help them understand their money and the economy. They will understand to set aside a couple hundred thousand for schooling with their first check. School will always be there. The NBA won’t. Strike while the iron is at its hottest, but be smart about it.

Who are you to decide what is the “right” way? Right is different for every person. Think about Liggins, who had one year of school left and a baby to care for. He did what he had to do, same with all these other young men. Duke does it. Kansas too. UNC isn’t exactly a model of ideal academics for athletes.

29 (CarolinaCatFan) Very well said. One point I would like to add is that Cal makes our players learn about money management and financial literacy. It is just as much a part of the program as working out and learning plays. What the players do with that knowledge is up to them. There are plenty of people that graduated from college and had good jobs that they lost in the economic downturn and who then lost their homes when they couldn’t find a new job. Those people would have loved to have had the chance to go pro after a year of college and thereby ensure the financial futures of their families.

I’ve heard Billy Reed opinions for many years. He is now on Drew Deaners show every morning and apparently is one of jurich’s boys. It’s no surprise that he is slamming UK. Tell me what coach in their right mind would not recruit the best players they can get to their program? Does he believe that 15 second Ricky would not take the players we have coming in next year because they may be one and done? Ridiculous. I wonder if Billy would advise his children to turn down million dollar contracts so they can stay in school for 4 years. Absurd…. He needs to retire. His opinions are past their time.

Okay Billy Reed what on earth did Dan Issel ever do with his degree from UK. Most of the star hoopsters are not scholars and either go on to something totally unrelated to what they studied for after they leave UK. The fact that they become millionaires is better than becoming Commisioner of Agriculture and than getting busted for tons of wrong doings even though he may have graduated. The flagship school of the commonwealth has plenty of other students to be academic geeks and represent the University well in that area. Most of your big money sports participants are not going to discover the theory of relativity. Unless your talking about Ivy League schools. Billy Reed you are a dinosaur.

These players are one and done players regardless of where they go. Why not come to a school where you have a chance to win and get playing time on a good team. Anybody that says they would rather have 4 years players, than have the best players must just be a uk hater. If Rick or Roy or coach K could get all these players, they would without a doubt. Don’t hate coach cal for being the best at what he does, hate the NBA for only making the kids stay one year.

    29) is accurate. The NCAA and the members are pimping these kids plain and simple, whether it’s for 1,2,3,4, or even 5 years. The travesty is that nearly as soon as a kid becomes marketable, they are off to the NBA. ….so who’s the bad guy??? Gotta be Calipari!! right? Examine the percentage of all college freshman who go on to graduate. It (the low %) may astound you. These are students who may have other opportunities, but probably not multi-million dollar opportunities. Bill Gates was what , two-and-done?
…must have played for Roy or Coach K. Wonder if Gates got his degree?? Oh, silly question….no one cares. What is crucially important is not that kids get educations, or that we all care about the kids, but that we all continue to feed the media machine.
