Keeneland Picks April 13

Pletcher Could he look more smug?

Bluegrass Stakes: Wow.  Pletcher had a nice finish.  Congrats to all the viewers…heard a lot about Monba and Cowboy Cal in the comments section, and they both brought their “A” game.  Pretty stoked about the Monba victory because  I have $10 on him in the First Pool of the Future Book.  Longshot Kentucky Bear rounds out the trifecta that pays over $3,300, and Jamie Theriot stays hot.  Only excuse for Pyro is the surface, but that honest pace (:24, :49) really wasn’t what he likes to run at in a field this strong.  Plus, a horse doesn’t seem to get his late kick on the Polytrack quite as well as a conventional dirt surface.  So, looks like Pyro fans are going to get some value on Derby Day.

Keeneland Picks (or lack thereof):  The first race of my KSR handicapping career on Friday, and I chose Seeking Shelter.  Well, his mate in the 1/1A entry actually won (Lil Tree), so I give a nod to the racing gods for my first career win.  I liked the Autry/Theriot connections, I just picked the wrong pony.  Better to be lucky than good.  Jamie Theriot was out of his mind Friday, winning 4 of the first 5, and Miggy Mena rode in on a $68 bomb (Sarahlane’sdestiny) in race 7.  Still, Friday nor Saturday brought me many winners, but we caught a good one in the tenth Saturday (Pickapocket), and any time you can get Mott/Desormeaux at 12/1, you take it.  So, we’re only down $16.30 after $114 worth of bets, but we always have Sunday.

Sunday April 13

Race 1: Chalk: War Tracer (5/2)       Pick: Swerve (8/1)

Race 2: Chalk: Cat Hop (3/1)             Pick: Tarva (8/1)

Race 3: Chalk: Command Sgt. Major (2/1)  Pick: Pulaski County (6/1)

Race 4: Chalk: Morghyn (3/1)          Pick: Houseboat (5/1)

Race 5: Chalk: Danzon (7/5)             Pick: Ballado’s Thunder (2/1)

Race 6: Chalk: Sacrifice Bunt (5/2)  Pick: Broad River (3/1)

Race 7: Chalk: A to the Croft (6/5)  Pick: Tiz to Dream (5/1)

Race 8: Chalk: Smart Enough (2/1) Pick: Probation Ready (6/1)

Race 9: Chalk: Scibelli (3/1)              Pick: War Ruler (15/1)

A to the Croft (Race 7) cost me a Pick Six last spring at Churchill, so I owe her one, but both she and Danzon (Race 5) look pretty strong, but we’ll do our best.    I’ll be sitting in the dining area at Keeneland with the big wigs on Sunday, so you can rest assured that I’ll be putting my money where my mouth is.

P.S.  I don’t see anything coming out of the Arkansas…weakest it has been in years.
