Keeneland’s Friday Morning Wakeup

Guess what day it is??!!!!

Ranked just above Christmas, Free Pancake Day at iHop and Super Bowl Sunday, opening day at Keeneland is one of the best days of the year. Guys, we throw on our best wrinkled suit and darkest pair of sunglasses, while the ladies get all dolled up and spend the afternoon breaking necks and hearts. It truly is one of my favorite holidays.

This year, Keeneland has a new look for the Breeder’s Cup later this month, and I’m pretty upset I’m stuck inside blogging all day and not out there taking it all in. But I will be there next Friday to see the new setup and to donate my hard-earned money to the track, so save me some bourbon and beer cheese.

Now let’s talk sports, quickly because it looks like BTI forgot his 8 am post and I’m late getting back from breakfast…

We haven’t forgotten about football.

Our sincerest apologies to the die hard UK football fans; we are still all-in and excited about the remainder of the season. The tons of basketball content we unloaded this week are only because of the October 1 release date for the embargoed interviews and the excitement around the Big Blue Madness campout. We have not made that switch to basketball, as a lot of fans do around this time of the year. Plenty of football content coming today as we count down to tomorrow’s game with Eastern. We blame the timing of the basketball media release, although the basketball content has been very, very, very good and we will continue to roll it out over the next week or two. We are very excited about both sports at the moment.

Mark Stoops did not comment on Boom’s playing status yesterday.

“He’s been at practice so we’ll see,” said Stoops. “We’ll see where things go. Not going to comment on it.”

This is a really, really, really bizarre situation.

Za’Darius Smith registered his first two career sacks on back-to-back plays last night.

Big Z brought down Michael Vick on consecutive plays in last night’s win on Thursday Night Football. Watch them below, courtesy of @marcum89:

Smith’s Ravens beat Bud Dupree’s Steelers in Pittsburgh on a late field goal.

Interesting stuff from Jonathan Schuette on Kentucky football’s odds.

Schuette combined three different efficiency ratings — ESPN’s Football Power Index, The (Ken) Massey Ratings, and Bill Connelly of SB Nation’s rating — to determine the probability of UK’s final record.

It’s comforting to know the Cats have a slightly better chance of going 8-4 than they do finishing 6-6. And only a 7.6 percent chance of missing out on the postseason.

Dominique Hawkins is always smiling.

Our friends at KSTV asked Hawkins to go eight minutes without smiling. He lasted a couple of seconds:

Tune in to KSR.

One last day of KSR morning radio before the weekend. Listen up as Matt Ryan “bond the bridge” between the week and the weekend as we get ready for the Eastern game.

Go Cats, everybody.

I’m going to get burned at the stake for this, but… I love winning. I love the chances that UK wins a National Championship, or at least is in contention for one every year in basketball. I’m a lifelong Cats fan and I wouldn’t trade the winning for anything. That being said, I miss the days where as a fan, I got to watch my favorite players come in and develop into outstanding young men who I felt had a legitimate lifelong connection to the University, such as Tony Delk, Jeff Sheppard, and even Jamal Mashburn. I’m not saying the players now, who are only here for a year or two don’t develop that, but I miss seeing my favorite players for 3 and 4 years in blue and white and I find myself looking less and less forward to basketball season. Part of that is probably the football fan in me that loves seeing what is happening in Commonwealth under Stoops. I’m getting to experience the building of something truly special as a lifelong fan and I can not deny how spectacular what I’m seeing really means to me. I just feel there’s something missing with UK Basketball recently and I want it back.

Wow! Totally wasn’t what I was saying. I just feel a disconnect to the basketball team recently that I have never experienced. Certain things, like a senior day where you actually feel emotion because you watched that kid give everything he had to the University for 4 years and what he did meant something to the program. Like I said, I wouldn’t trade the winning for anything and I love the Cats and the players who wear the blue and white. I just don’t feel as connected to them as I did when I was a kid.

Cal’s kids may not stay as long sometimes, but their impact on the community is at least as great as any players that came before them. And they come back much more frequently than players used to. We may not get to see them in blue and white as many times, but off the court, their presence is greater than ever before!

No, not Buffy, but she is “someone” and is, I believe, from Louisville. That photo is actually a few years old and I remember when it was first posted here in the discussion someone mentioned who she is. But she is almost unfairly attractive. The other four are attractive, but compared to her they just look worn out.
