Jorts Day remains a celebration, Cats hold of Commodores, 68-66

kentucky-vanderbilt

For a while, it looked like Kentucky was going to coast to an easy victory in Josh Harrellson’s final home game.  But as they’ve done far too frequently this year, they let their opponent come back and take the lead.  Instead of wilting, though, Kentucky looked the part of a veteran team in the game’s final minute and a half, making their free throws and putting together defensive stops.  Terrence Jones gave the Commodores one final shot with 1.1 seconds remaining after committing what might be the worst turnover in the history of the program, but Vandy’s opportunity to tie failed as Festus Ezeli lost the ball as he went up against Josh Harrellson.  It was a fitting end to a day of Jorts mania.  And, more importantly, it’s the start of a push to the postseason.  A good win for the Cats.

More in just a bit.  Until then, enjoy some Jorts video shot by Larry Vaught’s Droid.

Cal’s gameplan worked. He wanted to hold Vandy to under 10 made 3’s….. They made a team total of 2!!! Way to go Cats. A young team finaly closed out a hard game. Could be the sign of great things to come in March.

#2: Vandy is tough, you knew that going into this game. I do agree with you that we looked “scared” at times with the ball, but that’s because we’re young. But keep in mind we only hit 4 three’s this game total. In order for “THIS” Kentucky team to go far in March, they must hit at least 8-10 three’s per game.

Kentucky was coasting til the stripe started blowing his whistle everytime Kentucky had the ball. Jones was shoved is why he traveled…jeez…and only 2 fouls on Vandy the whole second half until the last 90 seconds. I wish Kentucky would get more home cooking, it’s embarassing to have the refs call against you at home even.

Good win for the cats regardless.

Jones almost single handedly allowed Vandy back in the game in the second half. Looked good the first half, but after halftime, was a non-factor for UK. Provided plenty of turnover opportunities for Vandy. Jeckyll and Hyde. Can’t do this in March!

#5 only because he gets hammered going to the basket and very rarely gets a call. He gets a call about every 6 times he gets hammered. Only player in NCAA that can be called for walking as a result of of being shoved by an opponent that obviously makes him move, and, one of the times was dribbling and got called for walking.

Hopefully when he gets to the NCAA tournament he will get a fair whistle.

36: I hear what you are saying, but I dont see it as simply being an issue of biased referees. His execution is unpredictable and sometimes embarrassing when he is trying to post. In a crowd his handle is shaky. He is at his best driving the ball and facing the basket. That’s how I see it. The guy is talented, but not a go-to guy. That’s why I get nervous. But a win is a win, and one we needed badly. It just doesn’t really feel like we won.

  59. Sterling Archer

Jones played poorly, but he made clutch free throws down the stretch, and helped knock the ball out of the hand of Festus Ezeli during the last play. Helen Keller could see that this team would be in dire straits without T.Jones. We won the game, quit bitching.

Great win … no thanks to the officiating. We had a 12 point lead and the officials decided to take over .. embarrassing the continued garbage calls that went down. Those were phantom walk calls against Jones .. watch the game. He even got called for walking while dribbling the ball. Guess they couldn’t think of a better fake call at the time!

Anyway, great win. Good to keep the home streak alive and to pull out a close one (against 8 guys)!

because according to many that last travel was ‘the worst turnover in the history of the program’ and Jones screwed us…what a crock. It was, simply put, another call in a career full of horrendous officiating by Teddy Valentine. The Vandy players were obviously fouling Jones to stop the clock and extend the game one more possession. Three of them were dry-humping the crap out of him. How UK fans can blame that one on him is beyond me. Glad we won…now let’s go get one in Knoxville.

The only game we were owned all year was the U Conn game. Beat the Cards on the road. Three freshman doing most of our scoring. Great recruiting class coming in next year. All tournament games at neutral sites. I like our chances in March. 18-1 at home and neutral sites. Go Big Blue Great game Jorts

#82 I think we all forget these are freshman’s and not seniors. Though very talented freshman’s but that doesn’t mean they know everything about life in college basketball. I hope this close win gives Cats a shot of confidence boost in their right arm [shooting arms for all except Jones he needs one on the left arm]. UNC won a close game at VA Tech and that turned the tide for them in winning close games. I hope it does same for us. Go Cats

CFT – I totally disagree about Cal’s coaching. Jones only came to the ball as the third option. We wanted knight to get it but they defended him well. Cal did a nice job coaching….cheering when they did good things and teaching and yelling when they screwed up. His game plan worked tonight so lets give him credit. I think the guys may get a bit tired in the 2nd half though. Not much Cal can do about that this year.

Awesome win! We needed to pull out a close one and we did. That’s two tough games in a row we have hung in and won. Both ranked teams and FL is the #1 team in the SEC. Excellent turn around after a bad loss at AK. Now we need to beat TN on the road and we will be peaking again.
