“Multiple sources” say Shabazz and Noel will land at UK

CBS Sports Insider Jon Rothstein reported this morning that there is a good chance that the Cats land BOTH 2012 superstars Shabazz Muhammad and Nerlens Noel:

“Multiple sources say there is more than a legitimate chance of Kentucky landing the top two prospects in the Class of 2012 in 6-foot-10 shot blocker Nerlens Noel and lefty wing Shabazz Muhammad.”

“Still, several sources still insist that Muhammad has wanted to play for Calipari all along and has always planned to be in college for just one season. With Kentucky’s recent success, it seems more than possible that both he and Noel could wind up playing their home games at Rupp Arena next season, where every night feels like it’s the first round of the NBA Playoffs.”

Rothstein lists a possible 2012 lineup that includes Noel and Muhammad, and let’s just say, it’s pretty:

PG Ryan Harrow (transfer from NC State)
SG Archie Goodwin (Top 15 National Recruit)
SF Shabzz Muhammad
PF Kyle Wiltjer
C Nerlens Noel

And that’s not taking in to account some players (MKG? Teague?) who may return to school after this season.

Giggity.

If you were a top recruit how could you NOT want to come to UK? Guaranteed rock-star status for life. Also, Poythress starts over Wiltjer. Love Wiltjer, but he’s got to become a lot more athletic if he wants to start. Defense is what will keep him from starting until he’s a senior. Kid will probably still be the best shooter on the team tho.

26: MKG still keeps talking like he’s going to. We won’t truly know until after the season is over. I feel like he’s gonna go, and he probably should, and if he does, I wish him the best of luck, but if he stays, he stays, and it’ll be a repeat next year.

I sense that Wiltjer is not getting the respect he deserves. He is the best shooter on the team and has some nice post moves. He certainly needs to get stronger, but that should happen over the summer. Wiltjer will start next season and will be in the NBA when his career at UK is over. BTW, that is not my opinion, but Coach Calipari’s opinion.

  33. dang!!!!

Poythress, Goodwin, Shabazz, and Noel along with Harrow possibly adding Oriakhi. This would be the best recruiting haul in UK history and even NCAA history. You have a senior national champ, a veteran point gaurd and one hell of a freshman class. I doubt all the pieces will fall in the right place to make this happen but I wouldn’t count Cal out of it!

  42. DTuck

Why do we assume that Shabazz would not come if MKG stays? Shabazz would likely start over Goodwin. It’s also possible that Goodwin plays the 2, Shabazz the 3, and MKG could play the 4 against most teams. MKG is listed 17 pounds heavier than Poythress. Another teams with two big guys, you might need Noel and Cauley/Bennett/Orakhi/Wiltjer for larger stretches, depending on who else signs.

Big Highlights for the next 12 Months for Cats:

    nat’l champs
7 gone (at least 6 in NBA)
    #1 recruiting class
    nat’l champs

(and Wiltjer still won’t start, even tho he will still be the best shooter on the team)

  44. SoKySam

MKG will be influenced to leave in order to make room for Shabazz.

Think about this for a second:
All these pros Cal is sending to the next level are going to be welcomed/scheduled back by Cal in August/September to come back and absolutely school the freshmen and get their minds in the right setting…working as a team…playing defense.

The lockout and the Thunder being able to come to UK during August is the reason we have a good team this year. The talent was there all along, but the influence of getting your tail whipped by pros at the beginning of the week during August and then being able to beat them by the end of the week had a huge influence on this team.

    Er’body oughta be real excited.

MKG just turned 18, and will want to come back. Wiltjer just has to move his feet on defense and he will become a great shot blocker, which he’s shown in flashes. Impossible matchup on offense – he reminds me of Prince, who looked very slow but developed into the guy who made the greatest block in NBA history, on Reggie Miller leading to the Pistols’ final and championship.

36…. The sec doesn’t accept transfers that are seeking a masters not offered by their current school. Made the rule after Jeremiah massoli (spellin may be wrong) got kicked off his team and was allowed to play in sec. Oriakhi would be immediately eligible and the sec would certainly allow him to come. This is an odd transfer case because of UConn sanctions

I wonder more if lamb, teaque and jones will come back. They could all use one more year, look how much teaque has improved over the season. That kid is a beast, and would be the best PG in college next year.

Let’s hang #8 and then we will line up #9. UL is gonna be one hell of a game, It’s a coin toss to me. I don’t care what the line is, that game is gonna be real close imo

Guys saying that Shabazz has scheduled his decision to find out what MKG is doing are just wrong. The 10th is the deadline to withdraw. You can still enter through the end of the month. A kid like MKG, regardless of where exactly he goes, is a surefire Top 10 selection, and likely Top 5 selection. Either he is going or he is not. There are no workouts/conferences to see if he belongs. He can and will wait as long as he needs to and when he is in, he is in. The 10th is nothing to him.

The ONLY reason for Bazz’s delay is finding out for sure what MKG is gonna do. MKG hasn’t put up the traditional numbers of a top 5 pick – so under normal circumstances (non Kentucky Effect) he would be back. Add to that he has flat out said (a couple times) he was coming back. I think ultimately MKG goes pro and Bazz is on the first plane to Lexington.

    MKG, go get us #8.

Harrow, Bazz, Poythres, Goodwin, Noel, Wiltjer, Hood, MKG/Teague…cauley may turn things up and be a contributor

MKG needs to improve his outside shot to be truly effective in the league, and that’s reason enough for him to come back. Not saying he will, but that’s reason enough.

Adding these two studs would be a great complement to our coming title.

So, do we still land Bennett, and is UK going to apply for a waiver for Oriahki if he’s interested?

no way in hell that “wilt-jerk” starts ahead of poythress!!!
sadly, wilt-jerk is merely a bigger, 6’9″ ver-shun of “hoodie”
he’ll be lucky to start by time he’s a senior
(just as this season no way that “disappearious” started ahed of MKG)

    C – Noel/Cauley
COuld be better than this years team… I want Lamb to stay, but I think he might end up going into the draft.

Shabazz is almost a LOCK to go to UCLA, most every site says that.
Nerlens, I’d give us a 30% chance. He’s reported GREAT visits to schools we’re recruiting against, and we haven’t even gotten him to campus for an official visit, meaning we haven’t been able to make our sales pitch.

This is just a pipe dream to think we’d get both of these guys. Nice dream, but it’s not going to happen. At any rate, we’ll still be decent, competitive again for the top four in the SEC (and that’s with a tough Mizzou, A&M (yawn), and South Carolina improving).

However, we won’t be as good as we are this year for a loooooong time, so just enjoy the moment. 36 wins, possibly 38 if things go our way. That’s incredible.

#20, we would just print up some shirts that say “Fear the Fade” instead of “Fear the Brow”.

I would take having MKG coming back for a year even if it meant missing out on Shabazz. No disrespect to Shabazz, but we know what we have with MKG, plus there are no possible eligibility issues with the NCAA.

Let’s get a few things straight. First, Wiltjer won’t transfer if we bring in an amazing class. He committed to us (without a visit) because he said he wants to go up against the best to improve. He’s FAR from NBA material right now, but with some strength building he will get better. That being said, I doubt he starts next year unless he either really puts on the pounds and learns lateral defense, or we end up with a weak class. He is a scoring threat, but a BIG defensive liability. Like it or not, Cal has us currently built as a defensive powerhouse (though that could change, he does adapt well to his players).

Second, John Hood sucks. That is all.

    95) Not excusing your blatant lack of UK recruiting knowledge, but I noticed that too- Last time I went on Rivals, it seemed like it hadn’t been updated in about 3 months. What’s going on over there?

  111. RYNO

    105) Are you high? UK hasn’t gotten to make their pitch to Noel? Nevermind that he was sitting in Rupp Arena when they played Ole Miss, and that Cal was in his living room the Monday following the Iowa St. game a couple weeks ago.

I agree with your sentiment that we should focus on the amazing team we have, and the task at hand, but you can’t get carried away. These two guys would be huge gets for what would be probably the youngest team that Cal has ever assembled next year.

This year’s team has the last of the Tubby/BCG guys. From here on out, we’ll truly see what it’s like to mostly retool with brand new guys every year. I don’t think Teague, MKG, TJ, Lamb, and obviously Davis are coming back. Miller’s gone too, so it will be interesting to see just how many “glue guys” he goes after in 2013. All signs point to very few.

Why are all these people thinking MKG is definitely gone just because he can make millions? Its not always about it for kids. I realize its different sports but look 2 straight years in football we have seen top players denying the draft for another year in school. Luck last year who wouldve been the top pick and Barkely this year who wouldve been probably top 10. They had a chance at instant money and turned it down. Its not about the money its about the person and what means most to them. If MKG truely wants to come back and convinces Cal he should because lets say he wants to work on his jumpshot then yes he has a chance to come back.

    115. I wouldn’t put any stock into that seeing as it’s coming from a Syracuse blog. I’m 100% confident if he was asked by KSR if he was a Syracuse lean his response would be the same. Whether he has made his decision yet or not wouldn’t change the fact that he wouldn’t tell anyone he was a lean to any school. What would he gain from doing that?

  118. bmac

People seem to forget about another man in the class named Willie Cauley. No he apparently doesnt have the offensive skills of an Anthony Davis or Nerlens Noel, but apparently he has the shot blocking ability and is pretty much 7′. Our front court could very well be Wiltjer, Cauley, Noel, Bennett or Oriakhi. Well will have another young group next year, but thankfully we will have Harrow, Hood, Beckham, and Wiltjer to even it out. Already cant wait for madness! GOO CATS!!
