Pick up the phone, it’s Joker. No, seriously…it’s him. Wants your advice on how to run a team and said the comment sections aren’t doing it for him.
Our main man Aaron has already been by with his recap, but he has summed up the Joker Phillip’s teleconference from today with some thorough coverage.
Here are Aaron’s notes, but make sure you click the link above and give him a hit.
“I thought our offense did a good job early the first two drives early moving the ball. We got an opportunity to put it in the endzone on the first drive. The second drive, we were in the redzone and fumbled. The defense did a good job of getting three and outs, but we didn’t get a chance to capitalize on them. We created some chances to score and didn’t get it in the endzone. We had a hard time getting off the field in the second half on defense obviously looking at the game. The thing you like how we competed and the effort we gave. I was happy to see E.J. Fields and CoShik Williams be big contributors. Hopefully those guys will continue to do those things that give them an opportunity to contribute the rest of the season. Got a huge challenge next week. It starts with our preparation. It starts on Tuesday and again it’s a huge challenge. The guys coming here sky high after beating Tennessee, one of their rivalaries. We have to get our troops back up and ready to compete.”
Larry Warford will probably miss Tuesday’s practice, but should be ready to for Florida.
Ryan Tydlacka is okay. Joker noted he did a good job of creating a “charge.”
Joker also noted he has not been involved in a game where the opposing team had 14 tackles for loss. He noted the team had 17 minus yard plays. He said it makes it hard as a play caller.
Joker feels Charlie Weiss does a good job of game planning. His guys will do a great job of screening. He noted Weiss probably has more playmakers now that any place he has been (Joker chuckled). He noted the QB (Brantley) is hot right now. He said it would be a huge challenge for UK defensively.
The question was asked about demanding better play from offensive line, but walking a fine line as a coach. Joker said, “We have to get them to play better. They are a veteran group. It’s a sensative deal. They were expected to be the leaders of the football team. Again, it’s a sensitive subject, but we as coaches have to find a way to get them to play better.”
Joker said he really liked the way Newton played. He played hard and played well. He really protected the football. He said there were some throws they could have thrown or caught better.
He also noted special teams made the wrong call on the punt that was blocked, which surprised as they have been sharp.
The team is in offensive and defensive meetings today. They will be on the field this afternoon. They had a 10 minute team meeting. “You could tell everybody’s down. The guys are looking for answers and we as coaches have to give it to them. We have to get them prepared better. They have to play better. We got to have a better overall performance,” he said.
He feels the team is tackling well. They are not blocking well and cited technique. They have to go back to fundamentals and go back to more individual drills. Joker noted they will scale back some things as they are having too many missed assignments. “Either we are doing too much or we are not doing a good job of teaching them,” he said.
Joker feels the offense is really close to popping some runs. It seems like there is a break down here or there. He noted the team hasn’t really thrown the ball well this season. He mentioned the team may have to speed up the tempo and get the running game going out of the gun.
Joker noted how fast Florida is on film and called them a “typical Florida team.”
Joker also noted it’s not just the offensive line. He said the running backs are not making the right reads in the blocking game. He said it’s a combination and not just the offensive line.
Joker said, “You can’t lose confidence as a SEC football player. We have coached offense for a long time, been in this system for a long time. We have had a lot of success in this system. It’s not broke. We feel our personnel is just as good as some of the teams that we’ve had here. We have to get them to play better as coaches.”
Apparently, Joker said the offense needs to “scale back” due to missed assignments, etc…but I’m not sure you can scale any further back considering out go-to play is the unbelievably frustrating 3rd and long draw. So there’s that.
The team is practicing somewhat today, will take Monday off, and then start the grind for the Florida game on Tuesday.
