Joker’s Sunday Teleconference Notes

Pick up the phone, it’s Joker.  No, seriously…it’s him.  Wants your advice on how to run a team and said the comment sections aren’t doing it for him.

Our main man Aaron has already been by with his recap, but he has summed up the Joker Phillip’s teleconference from today with some thorough coverage.

Be sure to visit his site,, for all kinds of football awesomeness and insight.

Here are Aaron’s notes, but make sure you click the link above and give him a hit.

Opening Statement:

“I thought our offense did a good job early the first two drives early moving the ball. We got an opportunity to put it in the endzone on the first drive. The second drive, we were in the redzone and fumbled. The defense did a good job of getting three and outs, but we didn’t get a chance to capitalize on them. We created some chances to score and didn’t get it in the endzone. We had a hard time getting off the field in the second half on defense obviously looking at the game. The thing you like how we competed and the effort we gave. I was happy to see E.J. Fields and CoShik Williams be big contributors. Hopefully those guys will continue to do those things that give them an opportunity to contribute the rest of the season. Got a huge challenge next week. It starts with our preparation. It starts on Tuesday and again it’s a huge challenge. The guys coming here sky high after beating Tennessee, one of their rivalaries. We have to get our troops back up and ready to compete.”

Larry Warford will probably miss Tuesday’s practice, but should be ready to for Florida.

Ryan Tydlacka is okay. Joker noted he did a good job of creating a “charge.”

Joker also noted he has not been involved in a game where the opposing team had 14 tackles for loss. He noted the team had 17 minus yard plays. He said it makes it hard as a play caller.

Joker feels Charlie Weiss does a good job of game planning. His guys will do a great job of screening. He noted Weiss probably has more playmakers now that any place he has been (Joker chuckled). He noted the QB (Brantley) is hot right now. He said it would be a huge challenge for UK defensively.

The question was asked about demanding better play from offensive line, but walking a fine line as a coach.  Joker said, “We have to get them to play better. They are a veteran group. It’s a sensative deal. They were expected to be the leaders of the football team. Again, it’s a sensitive subject, but we as coaches have to find a way to get them to play better.”

Joker said he really liked the way Newton played. He played hard and played well. He really protected the football. He said there were some throws they could have thrown or caught better.

He also noted special teams made the wrong call on the punt that was blocked, which surprised as they have been sharp.

The team is in offensive and defensive meetings today.  They will be on the field this afternoon. They had a 10 minute team meeting. “You could tell everybody’s down. The guys are looking for answers and we as coaches have to give it to them.  We have to get them prepared better. They have to play better. We got to have a better overall performance,” he said.

He feels the team is tackling well. They are not blocking well and cited technique. They have to go back to fundamentals and go back to more individual drills. Joker noted they will scale back some things as they are having too many missed assignments. “Either we are doing too much or we are not doing a good job of teaching them,” he said.

Joker feels the offense is really close to popping some runs. It seems like there is a break down here or there. He noted the team hasn’t really thrown the ball well this season. He mentioned the team may have to speed up the tempo and get the running game going out of the gun.

Joker noted how fast Florida is on film and called them a “typical Florida team.”

Joker also noted it’s not just the offensive line. He said the running backs are not making the right reads in the blocking game.  He said it’s a combination and not just the offensive line.

Joker said, “You can’t lose confidence as a SEC football player. We have coached offense for a long time, been in this system for a long time. We have had a lot of success in this system. It’s not broke. We feel our personnel is just as good as some of the teams that we’ve had here. We have to get them to play better as coaches.”

Apparently, Joker said the offense needs to “scale back” due to missed assignments, etc…but I’m not sure you can scale any further back considering out go-to play is the unbelievably frustrating 3rd and long draw.  So there’s that.

The team is practicing somewhat today, will take Monday off, and then start the grind for the Florida game on Tuesday.

In typical Joker fashion he said maybe we need to scale back….are you kidding me….we couldn’t be any more scaled backed from last year to now. He really is clueless.

I will be suprised it the Wildcats win another game. Bowl games have become so diluted that winning one is no more than winning a regular season game against a grade “B” opponent. A 6-6 season is a C- team. Ky. will never have a team until they bring back Bear Bryant.

Well, here it is. Three weeks into the season and Phillips’ has exhausted his cliche vocabulary….mostly during the last 7 days. His “How to stretch out excuses for a losing football season – 101” is worn and tired already…There’s no telling what he’s going to sound like after the Florida debacle. Where’s the white, hot anger with losing? Where’s the outrage at child-like play calling? Where’s the COACH leading the young men who are looking for a someone to follow?

Is Joker “just happy to be here”? Just glad to be cashing an SEC paycheck?

When there are more fans in the parking lot than the stadium and Barnhart sees tumbleweeds blowing through those luxury boxes…..We’ll see how “happy to be here” Phillips is…..

Newton did show signs of improvment last night and looked good when he had a descent play to work with! His best career game. But jokers playcalling is just pathetic. We have never had a good gamplan for a team. Just like last yr the only time we move the ball is when were 2 or morescorea down. Joker comes out every game playing to not get destroyed! This conservative bullshit just doesn’t and won’t win games! Offense looked good for the 3 drives they went no huddle cuz that is the only time we not running jokers gamplan! Think about it. We had double the yards in that 6 minute span than we did the othe 54 mins combined! I think joker has gotten more talent here but he is not a head coach. Period! Maybe a positions coach who has nothing to do with the playcalling at best! And I have been a supporter of his but I watched his conservative and vagina like gameplan for 16 games too many and can’t take it anymore. I’m starting to think he has a gaping ax wound between his legs!

Will someone please tell Morgan Newton that if he keeps his eyes on the same receiver the whole play and never looks him off, he will never be a good quarterback.I haven’t seen someones eyes that locked in on one guy like that since Elton John watched Rickey Martin walking off the stage. Jesus F Christ that is what a bad high school quarterback does. I have never seen him read any progressions. Of course when you have a milisecond to make a throw before you’re crushed by four 300 pound thugs I guess its hard to get past that first read. Seriously, when he did have time, he never looked off the first receiver. I don’t know which is worse, our O line or Newton.

I posted before the game that this would be a tale of two coaches – one taking a solid team on the way down and one taking a lousy team on the way up. Clearly, UofL has now passed us on their ascent under Strong as we are speeding downwards on the Joker Express. This is going to be a 2-10 season. I fear we have to do what UofL fans did with Kragthorpe before Barnhart will act – leave the seats empty. Not like watching this excuse for football is fun anyway.

Joker is just putting an UGLY product on the field and I have never seen the fan base so unanimous in believing that this man is hopeless. The solid foundation that Rich Brooks worked so hard to build is crumbling. After this season our recruiting momentum dries up and we are back to the seller. If we haven’t self corrected by say, mid to late October, I hope Mitch is smart enough to move fast to save this program.

I knew people on here would be calling for Joker’s head already…so many fans not happy he is coach at all. Let’s be real, UK is not a football powerhouse and they never will be. I went to UK and am a fan, but we have some of the most delusional football fans that think we can consistently compete on the national level. Sure, we had a couple of good years, but the bad years will always outnumber the good years. The same people on this site wanted Rich Brooks gone in his first few years. Joker never had a chance with many UK fans…

20,22, did my undergrad at east carolina, we had skip holtz. if we could get him out of usf he would change the culture of UK football and lead us to atleast 8 win seasons. He raised money for facility upgrades, got involved in the community, got in players faces when they sucked and took them to back to back conference championships. We had won like 5 games in 4 years before he got there. Thats the type of coach we need at UK not that s**t for brains tard we have now.

38., we know UK is not a football powerhouse, no one is saying they are. The thing is that UK was was slowly building something, in the toughest conference in football (SEC), and Brooks fought for it. Now Joker, and his delusional “scaled back” play calling are tearing it down! UK fans, are Top-25 in attendance, and yet we do not demand much! Most just want us to be competitive in games, and not run 3rd and long, draws up the middle!
To be honest, Morgan newton is probably the least of UK’s problems! Do I like that he only looks at 1 receiver, overthrows easy passes, or gets nervous in the pocket? No!
My biggest concern is with our crazy play calling, and our unbelievably bad offensive line. If our line continues to play this bad, the running game will have no chance! The worst thing about all of our problems, is that it makes you wonder what the heck the coaching staff and team was actually working on in the spring!
I would love to see us get someone like Leach, who brings a diverse offense to a game! I mean, we do not even utilize our tight-ends! UK can not be doing any of this if we wan to go bowling, for we are not UL, and do not play in the Big East, where we can compete with everyone in our conference after a couple recruiting classes. Think about how much worse our RECRUITING will get, after prospects see our lazy, and diminished offense! Who is going to even consider UK after we get demolished in our next 3 games?!

32- I sorta hope vandy whips us too. In fact, part of me was hoping that Louisville would win in hopes that would speed up Jokers departure. Anybody else feel that way? I have gone to Kentucky football games in Stoll field in the 60’s. Family has had season tickets since Commonwealth opened. I am a Kentucky alum. I have been to quite a few miserable games, but this team is the worst I can remember. Joker has to go.

    47) I support the program above all and sometimes that means not supporting a coach that’s a bad fit that can’t get the job done(reference: Gillispie). Joker could not light a match on the sideline, much less a team. Did you see Strong being an emotional leader on their sideline? It ain’t working for us!

Against Pitt in the bowl game last year is the perfect example. Supposedly Pitt was the team in turmoil going into that game. Supposedly they lacked clear leadership and supposedly didn’t have the necessary structure in place to prepare for that game.

Of course you would never have known that fact just watching the game. Kentucky was completely outclassed in every aspect of that game. There was no discipline, no sharpness, no edge, no passion — just like last night. Well… I take that back. Kentucky did have moments in last night’s game where things were working better, but of course, the coaches never built on ANY of that momentum or made ANY adjustments after halftime. NO adjustments WHATSOEVER that I could see!!

God it’s frustrating looking at Joker write down notes on his piece of paper during the game. What the hell are you writing down Joker?

    > uhhh… that play didn’t work.
    > uhhh… that play didn’t work.
    > uhhhh… maybe next time I should try a Newton running play on 3rd and long.
    > uhhh… How does the other team know what play we call seemingly every freaking time??

I’d rather read a Jerry Tipton article than this freakin thread. I’m so sick of hearing about the playcalling, THE FREAKIN PLAYCALLING. We’ve had great offenses with the same playcallers and no team in the freakin country is happy with the playcalling after a loss. Get over it already. We lost to the Tards, time for this team to strap it on and play like men. Its always the coaches fault. Bottom line these guys are men. Step up and play and quit let the coaches take all the blame for your sorry freakin effort on the field. If the freakin highly touted offensive like pukes don’t get their heads out of their asses we won’t win period. You have to be physical and fired up to beat anybody at this level. Time for our players to put up or call themselves wimps in the media.

Scale back? Simplify the play calling? I played QB for my HS team (in the 70’s) my peewee team had a more diverse playbook. And hell even then I knew to look off the 1st receiver. Seriously this team looks befuddled on both sides of the ball, there is no co-hesiveness no continuity, in other words most of the time. They look totally lost, and where does the blame lie for that? The coaching staff, I predict a 2-10 season, by the time J-State rolls around these poor misguided kids will have been through the SEC gauntlet for 3 games in a row, the players that are still physically capable of suiting up after 3 weeks of blitzkrieg SEC defenses, their morale will be lower than whale dung! And we all know where that ends up!
