Joker laughs at Steve Spurrier’s punter comment

Steve Spurrier slapped Kentucky with one of his backhanded compliments following South Carolina’s 54-3 win over the Wildcats last season.

“Kentucky has a heck of a punter, I know that,” he said.

When Kyle Tucker asked about it in today’s press conference, Joker Phillips shrugged it off and complimented Landon Foster.

“We’ve got a good punter this year too,” he said, laughing. “Steve is going to say things like that. If I’m putting every thing Steve says (on the bulletin board), we wouldn’t have any space on our boards.”

Spurrier also said his team could’ve scored 70 or 80 points but 50 was enough. THAT should go on the bulletin board.

Beat Spurrier.

Why even entertain the idea of trying to beat SC? It not going to happen. We will lose 42-3 and probably have around 80 yards of total offense. Joker and UK Football is a joke.

Shitty AD? People like you #6 are the dumbest people the BBN has to offer. Every sport, including Football, is better off now that we have Mitch. EVERY SINGLE SPORT. Because he let Brooks pick his successor, successor to the worst team in the SEC every year. He is “shitty”? UK HAS NOT BEEN ANYTHING BUT AWFUL AS LONG AS 90% OF UK FANS HAVE LIVED. What do you not understand about that? If you want to blame anyone blame Brooks. He put us in this situation. Brooks is the one who can’t evaluate coaching talent obviously. Blame him.

It’s time to pull out all the stops. All the trick plays, going for it on fourth down, just attacking the game with reckless abandon. Joker knows his time is limited as head coach. Seriously, what does he have to lose? If we’re not gonna win, at least make it exciting. Make us feel like you tried, like you give a damn. This failure mentality that has permeated the sidelines this season has got to go. Have some freakin balls and just GO FOR IT.

    12 and 14:

Yes, Barnhart is a terrible AD. Why would he let Rich Brooks choose the next coach without exploring the better options?

It is also a known fact that Barnhart had nothing to do with hiring Calipari. I mean, how can you hire BCG and extend tubby’s contract and then make a hire like Calipari?

Barhart better make a SPLASH-HIRE or his ass should be gone! There is no excuse for our football program to be this horrid!

    It’s all on Barnhart!

It was Rich Brooks who made that part of his contract, to appoint his successor. Barnhart would’ve had to cut Brooks loose early if he wanted to hire someone else. That’s not Mitch’s fault. How can you say the AD had nothing to do with hiring the highest paid person on his payroll? Of course he did, that’s dumb. Other people were pushing for him, because Lee Todd and others didn’t want to hire someone coming off 2 straight schools on probation. That’s not his fault either. Billy G was a bad hire, but not at the time, he was the one of the hottest names in coaching at the time. Plus Billy Donovan and Izzo turned us down.

You have no defense for this statement: EVERY SINGLE SPORT AT UK IS BETTER NOW THAN IT WAS BEFORE MITCH BARNHART ARRIVED. That includes Basketball and Football. We came 2nd in best sports school in America for f*cks sake. What do you people want?

If the game were at Williams-Brice, then it would truly be a baby seal clubbing (like last year). Having it in Commonwealth will keep in a bit closer–I say USC wins by 21 or 28 points. So we have that going for us, which is nice.

As long as they’re still selling tickets, why worry about whether or not we have a good team? I wouldn’t spend my hard earned money on any other product that wasn’t worth it, why should I do so for a football team? But good for you for spending money on a polished turd. I assume since you called everybody out for being negative that you’re going to every home game, right? At the end of the day, this UK team has lost 1 game that most reasonable fans thought they would not – to Western. So in my mind if the team picks up 1 win that most fans thought they did not have much chance in – at Florida, USC, at Arkansas, Georgia, at Missouri, at Tennessee – then they are back to even for the year.

Winning one upset game vs a better opponent does not make the team better or change the reflection everyone has on this team. We all know how bad UK is week to week, and have yet to see any noticeable changes on the field to rectify the situation. If Joker called 2 plays where the ball is thrown 20yrds or more in a row all this season I would be amazed (except on a hailmary must win situation).

#18 you are the moron. Barnhart has done a wonderful job. Has he made some bad hires, yes. He also quickly made changes to fix them too. Football is a total different beast then basketball. Basketball can go up and down with one class football takes a little more time. Joker was the logical choice to replace Brooks and he had earned the right. We had to give him the time to prove his self which 3 years is plenty. No one other then Joker is to blame for this fail and Mitch will fix that after the season. Everyone keeps talking of hiring a up and coming coach. How many have forgot that was joker 3 years ago. He was one of the top coaching prospects. We were praised for making such a great hire. Joker failed not barnhart.

#37, Blueberry: Why would Joker call 2 plays in a row trying to throw the ball 20+ yards down the field? If you knew much about football you would know that is a high risk, low completion play even for NFL quarterbacks and is hardly a recipe for success. Don’t believe me, check out the stats here:

And, for everybody that keeps preaching Mike Leach or James Franklin, how are those guys doing? And, while we are at it, has anybody checked up on Ryan Mossakowski? Really lighting it up at Lamar, where the only “decent” team they have played is Hawaii and they lost by 50 points. Oh, and he threw for 83 yards.

  47. Blueberry
    5:06 pm September 24, 2012 Permalink

45 — I was trying to make a point that Joker would never do that. And you are correct it is a high risk play, but UK is never going to surprise a defense using mediocre plays every down. Throwing the ball for 1-5yards down the field every other play gets you no where in a hurry.
Yes its a high risk play so lets just play low risk football every down is that what you are suggesting?
Several teams (fast paced offensive teams like Okla st, Oregon, etc) will be able to get 5-8 yards from a screen or running the ball so they take chances (consecutively) by throwing the ball for at least 15yards down the field and even when the defenses know they are about to do it, they still can’t fully prevent it. Those defenses have to protect a draw run play or the 20yard pass from happening. Its hard for them to control.

Every defense knows what plays UK is going to run before we do it. 1st and 10..pass for 1yard no gain, 2nd and up middle 1 yard gain, 3rd and up the middle loss of 4 yards.
Next series about the same except we pass for 5 yards and lose 6yards.

I can honestly say I was never fooled into thinking Joker was a good coach. I knew instantly with the way he handled Cobb during his junior season that he had some sideways thinking about coaching football. That team was too good to end with a losing record. Randall Cobb was one of the top 3 or 4 players EVER to play at UK and we would barely get him the ball that season relative to what he deserved. He probably should have been allowed to play QB as he was that talented. The offense should have been built around Randall individually. Joker refused to do that and failed to reap the fruits of having Cobb on your team. Overall, Joker is too stubborn to the point of it being a fault. That stubborness leads to predictability and that will get you killed in college football. Joker’s a decent guy but a TERRIBLE and INEPT head coach.
