Joker Gets Another

The ball is really rolling now. Steve Jones of Cats Illustrated is reporting that Myrtle Beach offensive lineman TJ Jones has committed to Kentucky. The 6’4″ lineman chose the Cats over East Carolina. Perhaps more important to note on the commitment, however, is that Jones is a teammate of Tyler Knox, a defensive end considering Kentucky, as well as Ole Miss, Mississippit State, Purdue and Southern Cal. Considering Kentucky seemed pretty content with where their class was already set at the offensive line position, taking the commitment from Jones seems to indicate they’re feeling pretty good about making a potential package deal with Knox, who also holds offers from Miami (Fl.), Oklahoma State and South Carolina.

1, for Collins Ukwu we beat out MTSU. Not impressive I know, but Ukwu is one of our better d linemen. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that UK can take a 2 star player and get the best out of them and help them to compete for a spot in the NFL. See Randall Cobb!

No offense to the young man but we are not going to ‘Rise’ by getting kids we outrecruit East Carolina for. For crying out loud.

I do wish the youngster well and certainly hope he is a diamond in the rough but statistics tell us that won’t likely be the case.

I support the big blue, but I’m allowed my opinion. Only UK football fans would be excited about landing a football commit who chooses between UK and East Carolina. Add the basketball picture of this football player and you have another reason why UK is SEC cannon fodder. UK gets the leftovers from Ga, FL, SC and TN. After the big dogs take the players they want we fight for scraps. That is the truth about UK football recruitng, if u think I’m wrong then you have drank too much blue Kool Aid! Football season is around the corner and all anyone cares about is some meaningless basketball game with Dominicans.

Let’s face facts, yes that’s what we are going to get is the leftovers from the power schools. So the key is to get the best of the left-overs. I hope TJ is that, certainly he shows athleticism and yes the white kid in the photo had to have another knee surgery. Ouch!!! I hope the kid is great and I hope the other kids that come along with him, which was the point of the blog are all they are cracked up to be. Until we win at a high level consistently we won’t get the 4 and 5 star recruits regularly.

I love football as much as the next guy but running down the premiere program that firmly identifies the University on a national level (basketball) to somehow prop up football is beyond dumb. The reasons why UK football will never be more than a middling, middle of the pack SEC program (in it’s best years) are three fold:

    1. Lack of instate talent and access to African American athletes. And the one bastion of that kind of talent in the Commonwealth where that exists is in Louisville..which we cannot dominate for various reasons and comparatively speaking the sample size is small. We can’t even keep what little high D-1 talent the state produces within it’s borders on a consistent basis let alone dominate the Jefferson Co metro area!

    2. A general lack of elite level donors who are interested in backing the UK Football brand and no real corporate base to draw from. People can blame the UKAA or the AD all they want but people want to be associated with a winner. Basketball is and football isn’t. Which it’s why people fall all over themselves to build things for the basketball program and it’s a pain in the butt to get the same level of funding for football. And when alternative means are put forth (raising donations, ticket prices, bonding, etc) all people do is bitch and moan.

    3. The SEC. It’s just blatantly unfair and UK will always be playing catchup no matter how much they spend or who they hire due to having a conference filled with at least 6 programs (three of them within UK’s own division) who will always outmatch and outgun you in terms of resources, tradition, talent level, facilities etc.

UK has great fan support for what it is: a mediocre program with occasional flashes of promise but always finds itself falling back to the statistical norm. So quit blaming the success of the basketball program for the failures of football. You want winning, championship caliber football? Solve two of those three problems and we might get there in 10-20 years.

26 Poco Chang, please enlighten us with your extensive knowledge of football recruitng. This young man I’m sure is a great player, UK has obviuosly taken this kid with the hope of landng his teammate knowning that without his teammate he can still contribute to the program. However, if this kid was SEC bigtime, he would not have left the state of SC unless it was for Bama, LSU etc..

Just returned from vacation on the Gulf Coast. Had a great conversation with a Vol fan (graduate/good donor) who stopped with his wife to comment on our beach umbrella. I identified myself as a Cats fan when he asked where we were from and I told him the umbrella wasn’t available in orange. He was travelling with a couple who were big UGA fans. We both enjoyed the fact that we could give the UGA fans some good natured ribbing about the school (no engineering program thanks to GaTech), the recent losses, etc. He was very complimentary of UK, both as a school and athletic program, and particularly mentioned the strides made in football.

Their were Bama and Auburn stickers, magnets, hats, t’s, everywhere!!! My wife said “this is far worse than home”. Lot’s of LSU gear too. When a neighbor Auburn fan travelling with his LSU counterpart said good morning and asked where I was from I told I felt I hadn’t been representing well enough and I should have been wearing more UK gear all week, he fired bak “nah that’s ok, we don’t follow basketball down here. It’s a secondary sport”

Nice guy. Very measured, thoughtful and respectful comment.

I applaud your enthusiasm, but everyone has an opinion and a right to express it without a response such as yours. Telling people to ‘SFU” or however you put it is exactly the ideology that backed half the world into communism. They too believed in only one opinion and everbody else needed to keep quiet.

Well, not in my world pal.
Let’s set up a talk date about November 30th and see how things have panned out. I sincerely hope your optimism wins out but I’m afraid there is a greater chance of typical reality setting in by that point.

In the meantime, state your opinion and let others do the same.

I played middle linebacker in the Big 8 Conference in the late 70’s. To say I know nothing about football or recruiting is plain none sense and making generalities about that is really knee-jerk on your part.

The point is perception, especially with SEC football, is a completely different animal even within the divisions. The Cat’s are making strides but until we win more big games that perception will remain.

By the way, my retort to the AU fan – “Hey, don’t forget we’re 1-1 the last two years there mr national championship” to which his LSU buddy punched him in the arm and said, “Boom!”.

If rankings don’t matter why are Alabama, Florida, etc consistently so good? Recruiting isn’t an exact science. Yes, you’re going to end up with kids who outperform their evaluations and kids who don’t measure up but the stats don’t lie that your chances of winning games at the elite level (against teams with similar recruits and below) are exponentially better with elite level talent.

It’s this that makes moving up in the SEC even more difficult. If we recruited at the current level and played in the Mac or the MWC or C-USA we’d be a dominant program in those leagues. But until we start amassing 4 star talent across the board expecting results in the SEC above what we’ve gotten is foolish.

  45. SagaciousMind

Those complaining are dumb and must not follow recruiting at all.

Tim Masthay, Jeremy Jarmon, Braxton Kelly, Trevard Lindley, Myron Pryor, Garry Williams, Wesley Woodyard, Ventrell Jenkins, Johnny Williams, Jacob Tamme, Kennan Burton, Ricky Lumpkin, Randall Cobb. All these guys were 2 stars on Scout and are either on NFL teams or on scout teams. Also, all these guys had big careers at UK. SOME PEOPLE THINK THEY KNOW FOOTBALL WHEN THEY DONT!!!

  46. SagaciousMind
    4:11 pm August 2, 2011 Permalink

And let us not forget, Derrick Locke and John Connor were both walk ons. It doesnt matter who you beat out or their rankings, it matters what they put into practice and getting better. It’s obvious UK has a history of this. Danny Trevathan is a 2 star as well.

45 all the great former Cats you mentioned were great and improved our program immensely. They also never fnished better than 3rd in the SEC East and played in 28,000 Music City Bowls. Meanwhile rival SEC schools were winning National Championships. uK football has been at it’s best lately and still struggles just to compete in the SEC. Oh yeah those former greats never beat Tennessee, and UT has been awful lately.

50, that’s because we’ve never had great depth and never had a good offense and good defense at the same time. Those guys took us for a 2 or 3 win season to 7 and 8. Not to mention before Rich Brooks, we were lucky to have 1 person who could run faster than a 4.5. UK has been recruiting speed, and speed bodes well over stars. Some of you must not be aware that we are sittin squarely in the mix for 4 and 5 stars, like Adolpus Washington. But you know what, I think you forget that we have beaten LSU, Georgia, Auburn. So what if the UT streak hasnt ended, it’s not like they’ve won these last few games cuz they are better. It will end and I say it happens this year in CWS. Those Cats did a lot for our program and it’s ashame you dont give them any credit. Getting to the bowl games is why these 4 and 5 stars are even considering us when before, UK wouldnt be a school they’d even consider. Get over yourself. This program has to be slowly built, it’s football, not basketball.
