Joker And The Cats Are Ready To Go

ukf

Today was the first official day of the UK Football season as the media had a chance to visit with the players and coaches as they gear up for the season.  The players actually reported to camp yesterday, but with more opportunity with the media today.  As you likely know, Matt Jones was on the scene interviewing anyone he could get his hands on – you should definitely check out the podcast when you get a chance.  But until then, here are some quotes from a few of the players and Joker from the past two days.

Joker on getting started:

“We’re excited to start year two of our boot camp. We have a lot of reasons to be happy with this group. We’re just excited about getting with this football team, especially after the reports we have heard from strength and conditioning staff.”

On his decision to keep the freshmen from the media after today:

I think we will play more freshmen than we have in the past. So, those guys already have a lot on their plate and I think it’s going to be good for those guys to concentrate on just football right now.”

Joker also let us know that both Bubba Tandy and David Washington would be attending junior colleges due to academic ineligibility while Nile Daniels is still working to get eligible.  A number of players will ease their way into practice (McCaskill, Donte Rumph,) due to injuries, but are expected to be good to go shortly.

Ronnie Sneed on how the team feels this year:

“We’ve got really good team chemistry, a lot better than we’ve had in the past. Before, we had a lot of people who didn’t take it as seriously as they needed to. This year, when we call an extra practice or an extra running session, everybody is out here. That’s really important because when it comes down to it on Saturday, your teammates are all that you have. You can’t look for coach to come out there on the field with you and play. Knowing that we have each other’s back and we’re willing to work hard to push each other when we’re down is great and it’s needed.”

On the upcoming camp:

Brian Adams – “Don’t get caught up in the negativity of it. Your body is going to get tired, but enjoy today and enjoy the opportunity you have. We’re all extremely blessed to be out here, so have fun.”

LaRod King – “Camp determines whether or not you’re ready for the season, honestly. It’s really like, you can talk all the stuff you want to now, but once you put the pads on and get hit for the first time it’s like, ‘Oh, OK, I know where I’m playing now. I’m playing in the SEC.’ You’re going to feel it in the morning.”

Stuart Hines on the favorite KSR tradition of growing mustaches:

“Yeah, I’m trying to look like Alan Cutler as much as I can. It’s whoever wants to jump in on it. It’s kind of been a camp tradition since I’ve been here. The older guys did it and I didn’t want to let it die out this year.”

With football finally getting in full swing, we’ll have more updates as camp progresses.  Until then, make sure you listen to the podcast below and hear Andre Woodson, Joker, Mitch, Tee Martin and Rick Minter’s thoughts on the upcoming season.
