John Wall knows what it’s like to lose a parent to cancer; his father passed away from the disease when John was nine years old. So when he got word of six children in the D.C. area who just lost their mother to cancer, he did what he could to brighten the holiday. Wall took over the Christmas shopping duties for Altra Gibbs, who is now raising her daughter’s children while fighting her own battle against cancer.
“This is a miracle to me,” Altra Gibbs said of Wall’s surprise Secret Santa visit. “I appreciate it so much.”
She cried as she hugged John after he showed up at her home with trash bags full of wrapped presents for the family. Wall said he wanted to help out as soon as he heard the Gibbs’ story.
“My dream is not just to play basketball,” he said. “My dream is to help other people out and make their lives better.”
