John Robic talks about next season’s roster

Last night, John Robic sat in for Cal on his weekly call-in show and fielded a question about how the staff may handle next season’s roster. With five recruits signed, one committed, and a few more possibly on the way, here’s how Robic broke down the roster situation:

“If you look at our current roster right now, you’re allowed 13 scholarships. Well, we have a few walk-ons that are on scholarships that’s a 1-year contract; we have a couple seniors in Julius Mays and Twany Beckham; we have to see who, if anyone, will go to the NBA draft. With that in mind, we will never be in a situation where we will be over signed. We have a lot of flexibility right now, we are still continuing to recruit, because if you go home and do the math, there’s 13 on our roster. Take away the walk-ons, take away a couple to the NBA, take away the seniors, there’s a lot of flexibility there. That’s why we continue to recruit.”

Plenty of room for you, Andrew and Julius.

Would hate to see or walk-ons get booted. We’re not UL. But I guess I understand it. Hopefully it won’t come to that though.

The walk -on’s would still be on the team just not on scholarship.

He’s clearly echoing what people have said about Polson being able to go back to walkon if needed. As for a “few” walkons on schollie, I thought Polson and Beckham were the walkons, but presumably Beckham is one of the seniors he’s thinking of. Hood is planning to come back, right? I don’t think anyone would hold it against him if he returned or transferred for more playing time given how deep the bench will be if we get Randle and Wiggins.

Generally speaking, we’ve got 6 coming in, expect Wiltjer and Hood to return, probably Harrow. That’s 9. Polson and other walkons (Long, Malone, Lanter?). That leaves 4 scholarships for any combination of Randle, Wiggins, Noel, WCS, Poythress, Goodwin, and Hawkins. I think the first 3 have a schollie if they want it, which leaves one for WCS, Poythress, Goodwin, and Hawkins. Personally, I think if we get Randle and Wiggins, they keep one for Noel if he wants it, and then WCS, Poythress, and Goodwin probably all go pro with a preferred walkon offer to Hawkins, if any offer.

    2) They obviously wouldn’t be booted. They’d become what they are meant to be: WALK ONS. Walk-ons are usually not on scholarship unless they work hard and the team roster leaves available scholarships on the table. You don’t think Sam Malone and Brian Long have money? I guarantee that Cal doesn’t choose walk-ons who can’t afford to be at UK.

Why do fans worry so much about the scholarship situation? Let the coaches handle it! They always do …as long as we don’t have Crean or Pitino, then we can be confident that the young men will be taken care off and not left out in the cold. Even if some walk-ons have their athletic scholarships taken away, then they will still find financial aid for them. Lots of ways to get their education paid for.

If everyone returns: we would have Harrow, Goodwin, Poythress, Wiltjer, WCS, Noel, Polson, Hood. Thats 8, plus 6 current signees. Puts us at 14. So I am assuming he is looking at Noel and Goodwin to go pro, so we have 1 available scholly without pushing Hood or Polson onto walk-on. Is that right?

So if they offer the “preferred walk-on” to Hawkins, we can still add Randle, wiggins, Gordon and be under the limit.

The way they’re recruiting, it looks like Calipari and the staff have realized the one-and -done is too much work, and will likely start to recruit to get guys to the league in 2 years. Looks like they are adding depth. I like it.

I thought that if a student athlete used a medical redshirt year, then we were allowed 14 scholarships for their senior season. I remember that being a topic for Jared Carter, anyway.

    4. Everyone got scholarships this year because there were enough to go around. I do hope they can find a way to keep Polson’s, out of his loyalty. He’s only got one more year, and considering he is getting his degree early he will be doing graduate work, which is more expensive.

Yes, even Brian Long has a scholarship, according to UK Athletics.

I like your analysis #4, but I think Noel is gone for sure and that would leave one scholarship for Poythress, Goodwin or WCS, who is probably gone also. The numbers will work out though.

12 i agree on poythress but wcs is gonna be top 10 hands down Since nerlens went down he has stepped up and showed he is gonna be a beast once he reaches his peak maybe better than nerlens. Not likely but possible in my opinion.

on the KY recruiting blog website there’s a link that does a good job covering this. Also mentions that Hood and Polson are on schedule to graduate in the spring and would only be able to play if they were grad students.

If Hood or Polson did not plan on returning due to their graduation in the spring they would have participated in senior night ceremonies. Since they didn’t you have to assume that they plan on coming back to play next year.

Jarrod, I hope you see how much your appreciated. I hope you transfer and play somewhere else. If you would have went to liberty you would be starting & in the tournament. I appreciate you & realize the sacrifices you’ve made.

Noel will likely declare. Goodwin is almost a sure thing. WCS will definitely have the opportunity. Poythress should maybe come back because of how much he’s probably slipped, but then he’s likely to have to stick another year if we also get Randle. Of course, Randle could decide not to come if Poythress lets it be known he’s returning.

    15) WCS is on pace to be a lottery pick. Blocking 3-4 shots per game, runs better than 90% of 7-footers without being in the best basketball conditioning, a developing offensive game, etc. There are a bunch of NBA teams that’ll want him if he chooses to declare.

    16) Yeah, if they enter Grad School, they can keep playing. They could also both transfer without sitting out if they went somewhere with a different grad program (if they wanted to). Polson can go back to walkon if needed, too, I believe.

    12:32 pm March 12, 2013 Permalink

    19) If Hood has applied for a medical redshirt for last year, he has a year of eligibility left. So he could come back next year if he wants. Or if you graduate, you can transfer and play immediately if you go somewhere with a different graduate program than your previous school had. How do you think we got Mays?

    12:35 pm March 12, 2013 Permalink

Why do you all care about keeping any of the walk-ons on scholarship? I sincerely hope all of them including Polson lose their scholarship. They were brought to UK to be walk-ons. Any season that they get a scholarship should be considered a gift to them. Obviously if we can give them one than great, but we should try to utilize all 13 of our spots. That is the best way we can build depth.

And you bunch of idiots, jarrod was never a walk on. He was asked as a preferred walk on who got a scholarship the day he walked on campus. He had several D1 overs he could have taken. Im glad A hickey didn’t come & I hope the Hawkins kid doesn’t come, because this is the way they would be treated.

    9) I did a little research and it appears that even when a medical redshirt is used, it counts against your total allowed scholarships. At least it does in football. What doesn’t count are medical exemptions (hardships); which are basically career ending injuries. A school can keep a kid on scholarship if he/she is unable to play, but it doesn’t count against the allotted scholarships. This is one of the few things the NCAA got right. This obviously wouldn’t apply to John Hood since his injury most certainly wasn’t career ending.

    12. W. Cauley-Stein? N. Noel?
    13. J. Randle? A. Wiggins? D. Hawkins?

    Walk-ons: J. Polson, S. Malone, B. Long, T. Lanter, D. Hawkins?

Obviously one or two will probably go pro and we may only get 1 between Randle and Wiggins. I wonder if any of these returning kids could possibly pay their own way? I’m not worried about it, it should certainly work out. A good problem to have with the talent we have coming in next year.

24 – I love that being asked to be a walk-on, accepting it, and then being given an available scholorship later on is considered “not being appreciated.” You are correct, Polson had other D1 schollies, and he chose not to accept them, instead to walk on at UK. Also, your completely wrong about Polson not being a walk-on. He was granted an available scholarship starting with his soph year. Read this and shut up:

27 – Thank you for bringing common sense to the conversation. There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between a player that was offered a scholarship from Day One and a player who came as a walk-on and was given a scholarship for an open spot. Polson initially came to UK with the intent of being a walk-on. Hawkins would NOT be the same situation at all as he has already said he won’t come unless hes a scholarship player.

I gave this serious thought just last night and a little BLUE bird told me the answer.

Of this years team we will have 5
    returnees for 2013-14;

    Kyle Wiltjer
    Ryan Harrow
    Willie Cauley-Stien
    Jarod Polson
    Jon Hood

    We will have EIGHT freshmen
    joining them to make 13

    Aaron Harrison
    Andrew Harrison
    James Young
    Marcus Lee
    Dakari Johnson
    Julius Randle
    Dominique Hawkins
    Derek Willis

    Note: Cal, WANTS 40-0!

Rumors are getting stronger that Hood is going to go the Julius Mays route and find PT. Second rumor is Polson has a couple of big time job offers (remember the kid is a genius) and may leave. Both are graduating.

Mays gone, Beckham gone, Noel gone (c’mon, he can be top 3? Get paid to rehab? Duh)

    All walk-ons currently are gone.

IN: Harrison, Harrison, Young, Lee, Johnson, Willis, Wiggens, Hawkins
    STAYING: Wiltjer, Hood, Polson, Harrow
    NBA: Noel, WCS,
    Dleague or overseas: Goodwin, Poythress

That leaves 1 open scholly, Cal will try to get Randle but I think he is going to Kansas, so it will probably end up being award to a walk-on. Harrow I think is a wild card, he could try the draft or overseas, or can he transfer again? My dream would be for Noel or WCS to return.
