John Calipari wins Twitter

It’s no secret to us that Cal likes Twitter. His account, managed partly by DeWayne Peevy, averages several tweets a day, ranging from practice updates, pictures of him with former players, and of course, promos for sponsors like Papa Johns and Orange Leaf (thankfully, we’ve seen fewer of those in the past few months). One of the reasons Cal is such a good recruiter? Between Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, he’s got a monopoly on social media in college basketball. And there’s nothing kids these days love more than social media.

Just how far ahead of the pack is he? Chris Burrows of Run The Floor compiled a list of all of the college basketball coaches on Twitter and ranked them by the number of followers they have. To say Cal has a commanding lead is an understatement; he leads Tom Crean, the second place finisher, by more than one million followers:

1. Kentucky Wildcats — John Calipari @UKCoachCalipari 1,203,136
2. Indiana Hoosiers — Tom Crean @TomCrean 83,915
3. Florida Gators — Billy Donovan @UFCoachBillyD 75,507
4. Kansas Jayhawks — Bill Self @CoachBillSelf 53,881
5. South Carolina Gamecocks — Frank Martin @FrankMartin_SC 26,505
6. Butler Bulldogs — Brad Stevens @BUCoachStevens 23,460
7. Central Michigan Chippewas — Keno Davis @CoachKenoDavis 23,134
8. Nebraska Cornhuskers — Tim Miles @CoachMiles 22,976
9. VCU Rams — Shaka Smart @coachsmartvcu 22,113
10. Tennessee Volunteers — Cuonzo Martin @CuonzoMartin 20,516

To see the list in full, click here. Some observations:

1. Tom, it helps when you know the difference between a tweet and a direct message, doesn’t it?
2. Frank Martin obviously got a boost from all those Pitbull tweets
3. Keno Davis? Really?
4. Rick Pitino comes in 15 seconds at #13; Billy Gillispie comes in at #45
5. Shaka Smart’s avatar is just as intense as you would imagine:

Living in bama, I’d like to see how Cal shapes up against Saban and the other SEC football powers.

I think this says just as much about us crazy UK fans as it does Cal. And that isn’t a knock in any way on Cal.

So, 4 of the top 10 are SEC coaches, but SEC doesn’t care about basketball?

2 not all of the coaches accounts have been verified, so it’s hard to tell if they are real. I didn’t see a Nick Saban account, only an AL football acct w 27,000+ followers. Mark Richt from GA has around 41,000. Les Miles (verified acct) only has 78,000+. Even though he isn’t SEC anymore, Lane Kiffin (verified acct) only has around 28,000. Looks like it isn’t as popular w the football community.

Just for the record that’s Coach Cal 1,203,136. EVERYBODY else 550,998.

The Pitino account they credit is a fake. Never tweeted, only follows two people, one of which is: Stefon T. Kragthorpe‏.

#1 – I think it is in reference to how Cal learned the dribble drive offense. Story has him talking it over with another coach in a diner using the stuff on the table.

#13. I noticed the same thing. I ballparked a higher number for the other coaches, but that’s still crazy. Cal has almost twice as many followers as EVERY other mens college basketball coach COMBINED. That is a monopoly on the medium.

It’s odd that Richard Pitino has more followers as FIU’s coach than Jim Boeheim as Syracuse’s coach.

This just shows Cal connects to these young kids better than any other coach. It’s not surprising he gets the kind of recruits he does. However the author needs to do some research… The Pitino account is obviously fake, he doesn’t even allow his players to have a twitter. Makes me wonder about some of the others listed

@19, I actually added it up. Though I’m sure I made a few small errors (adding that many numbers is a pill!), all others combined have 815,421. More than half, but still not close.

The only reason Crean has so many is that everyone’s waiting for another “accidental tweet”. I bet 50,000 of his followers are actual, true-blue UK fans.

Billy D, same thing…not for the risk, but for the competition.

BBN validates all kinds of media…All Thameltoe had to do was write a (bunch of) malicious UK article(s) (any of which were made infamous by KSR), walk in to his boss’s office, and say “pay me or I’m gone…do you see how many hits my stories are getting?”

Well another “15 seconds” Pitino joke, the class from KSR is constantly on display.
