John Calipari Relays A Nice Story About Nerlens Noel To Campers

KyForward’s Jon Hale is covering John Calipari’s Pro Camp today, and he reports a very nice story that Calipari told about Nerlens Noel to campers and their parents this morning. I encourage you to give the entire story a read, but below is Calipari explaining how a UK student informed him about Noel visiting his grandmother in a nursing home:

I was approached by a student who said, ‘I want to tell you Nerlens went to see my grandmother.’ I said, ‘Really? How did that happen?’ I’m thinking the university set it up for him to go to a nursing home. ‘No, I just saw him on campus and I told him my grandmother was here and he went over to see her.’

Very often, athletes are encouraged and sometimes set up by the athletic department to make visits to nursing homes or hospitals for community service. But being the great kid that Nerlens is, he’s done a lot of his good works completely on his own. I wonder how many great things Nerlens has done that we do not even know about. They don’t make many with a heart like Nerlens Noel.

Nerlens will truly be missed. He was a class act, and a great guy. I’ll miss watching him swat balls into the upper deck of Rupp Arena.

Great story to hear. Sounds like a fine young man. I hope all of the money and fame doesn’t change him.

Why do I care what he does off the court KSR? But seriously he should come into town once a year to give each new class a lesson in great ways to use your fame and serve the community.

@7 Why should you care? I hope that is a joke or that you’re very young and outgrow it.

#8 that is a reference to what seems to be a prevalent attitude at KSR that a player’s conduct off the court / field should have no effect on whether or not we should be fans of the player in question. If it goes for bad behavior I suppose it goes for good behavior too. And the second sentence should have made it obvious the first sentence wasn’t to be taken seriously thus the words “but seriously”.
