John Calipari issues a statement on Ryan Harrow’s decision to transfer

The University of Kentucky has confirmed the news that Ryan Harrow will in fact transfer to Georgia State. “Given the health of his Dad, we fully support Ryan’s decision to transfer to Georgia State to be closer to his family in Atlanta,” Calipari tweeted out just a few moments ago.

Calipari continued, “Ryan was a vital part of this year’s team and an important player in practice during our 2011-2012 national championship run. I want to thank Ryan for his efforts and hard work and wish him the best of luck at Georgia State. I know the BBN will keep a close eye on him and wish him well as he continues his basketball career and his pursuit of a college degree.”

16, Tampa…I hear ya. I live in Augusta (about 2hrs from Atl) and yes, his father is ill and he comes from a very close knit family. It will be good for him to be close as that is in his nature deep down it appears.

One thing for sure the kid never had the ability to separate emotions from hitting the rind of life itself. Even at NC State, when his father was healthy, he was home sick a lot and couldn’t work it out there. Nothing against this very emotional young man, but we are better off as well as he is. NC State is one thing but we are UK and it is not for everyone.

I think the most likely scenario is that the coaches were HONEST with Ryan – they did not tell him to leave but no doubt they flat out said, you will not be getting much playing time and if you want to leave, we will help you find a program. If you want to stay, you’ll have to accept your role. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that honesty, and the kid knows how he played! He wouldn’t expect playing time with the twins coming in anyway.

I really hope this kid was not thrown under the bus. He alone was not the cause of the teams mediocre season. By the way, the Cats won 21 games this year which is not a bad season. Had he had some assertive players on the court with him he would have been a better player. This really sucks- we should not have players transfering like this. Uk recruited him and we should stand by him. We should be loyal to all our players not just those we see as great. SUck-Suck -Suck. Our coaching staff should be better than this-I really hate this about our program.Uk may not be for everyone, but if we recruited a kid we should stand by him for better or worse. This is not the NBA.By the way Catlanta you suck too and do not deserve to be a UK fan( you are probably a frustrated dog fan.)Please move to Athens

  51. Hunt

40 – it wasn’t him alone, no, but he did kick start the process by getting 5 games behind when he had a few screws loose at the top of the season, then having to earn his spot back over the next few games, causing Archie to have to play out of position at the point, and Archie’s development as a SG was therefore similarly retarded – he always seemed to be just a little more “freshman” than everyone else, despite his obvious heart.

Of course, far into the future people will point to Noel going down as the defining moment of the season, but in truth, we were just as mediocre without him as with him. This team was never more than the sum of its parts.

#46-I am sure his father is a factor, but with a little encouragement from the coaching staff, I believe he would have stayed. We also cant assume he would have been a backup to A Harrison. Harrison is a freshman. He also has a tendency to get nicked up. Harrow would have had playing time. Its not his fault alone that Uk backslid. The only assertive players we had were Nerlens and Archie. I believe Ryan had a lot of potential. The coaches should go out of their way to keep players-afterall we recruited Ryan. i hate for any single player to be made a scapegoat for a teams lack of success. Uk fans pride themselves as basketball “experts”. Well if thats the case we should know that a TEAM has to perform to win.I just hope Ryan was not scapegoated-he was certainly blamed by our so called fans who should know better. We should not let these kinds of things happen and must support all the players on this team. We should be so critical of ourselves on a daily basis.

Look, the fact is Harrow was going to have a drastically reduced roll next season. He would have played very little, if at all. And I dont think staying in Lexington could have benefitted him very much. He isn’t going to develop into NBA caliber as I see Goodwin, Pythress, and Cauley-Stein doing. Harrow was given a choice and he made a good decision for his own future, IMO.

I agree that this is both a sad story and at the same time, total spin. While we hope the best for Ryan and his family….the reason he left early in the year is because he and Goodwin can’t stand each other. It was so bad that Harrow quit and went home…period. Cal had no point guard so he talked him into coming back….Then Cal had to baby him all year and everyone hated the situation.(Remember the ‘hijack the program’ referance by Cal?)Remember the ‘guys that quit’ referance by Cal in the Robert Morris game? Basically it turned into TEAM TURMOIL.

If this is the only reason he is leaving….then this was an absolutee blunderous public relations move by UK. I know, and the rest of you guys who read posts and post on here that at the first of the year if he came out and told everyone about his father’s stroke and struggling recovery, we as a fanbase would have backed him and his family to the ends of the Earth and back. We as a fanbase would have supported Ryan’s decision to go back home and be with his family 100000000% during those 2 weeks. That’s why this just doesn’t make total sense to me. Instead, if this is all true, we were given a story of a mystery illness and then family issues during the time when he left the team. I know that Ryan or UK don’t have to tell us as fans anything as it is there business, but you know in this soap opera that we the fans embrace as Kentucky basketball there is no need to drop a snowball off the top of Mount Everest cause’ when it gets to the bottom with all the speculation and here say it becomes too large to melt in oneday it stays with you all year. I cannot see any reason UK or Coach Cal would have allowed the circus that took place during those 2 weeks and scrutiny it put on Ryan if there was not something else internal involved. With all this being said, I can understand if Ryan’s mind was on his father he would have mental lapses like he did this year, but there is no excuse for his soft play. There were times this year he wouldn’t drive the ball and break down defenses because he clearly didn’t want to play through contact. Also, there were times this year when he went to ther rim he was so worried about being hit that he would release the ball early and blow the layup. I do wish Ryan the best, but at the current state of our program he is NOT an elite point guard and needs to get alot stronger with the ball. I also hope in the future if we have an incident similar to this it is handled publicy by UK, but I cannot help to think that there was not some underlying issues not made public that led to his transfer.

I actually feel bad for Harrow. He has been somewhat led to believe that he would eventually end up in the NBA, yet he ends up transferring to a school thats not going to provide him with those means. Theres really no place for him at Kentucky, but if i was him, i would just wait it out, and work on the degree in the meantime.
