Joel Pett’s Interview with KSR was fun

KSR’s interview with Joel Pett was so absurd, it deserves its own post on the website. Pett called in to the radio show this morning to defend his editorial cartoon of Calipari’s trophy case, and he raised eyebrows at the station with his potty mouth and anti-UK agenda.

A brief recap:

— Facts aren’t important

— He doesn’t consider the jobs of co-workers in his work

— UK’s “alleged student-athletes”

Did I just hear that?

— Shannon The Dude hits the dump button

Have a listen…

And enjoy the entire show in today’s podcast…

What do you expect from a Hard line Liberal from the north. I work alot in Ohio and some people from the north really hate people from Ky. I think this is more of a dislike for the state and Kentucky being a Conservative state more than just UK basketball. Pett knows hitting UK basketball will get most of the state in an uproar.

I’m amazed at his foul mouth and his blatant anti-UK agenda, and the fact that he didn’t even attempt to hide either. It’s clear to me, assuming the LHL actually cares about integrity and standards, that this man has no business reporting in any way on UK. I think he should lose his job because of the way he conducted himself in this interview. I would be ashamed, if I were his editor or a higher up in the LHL, that this man represented my paper in this way. He’s an IU grad and an IU homer and facts mean nothing to him, he said so himself. He should move back home to Bloomington. I’m sure he could get a job easily up there with his hatred of all things UK.

This guy serious admits that he doesn’t use facts. Wow, at least he admitted he has no credibility as a journalist… Matt called him out a fact for not using last years final four trophy. Loved it. Bitter IU fans who just jab about us losing in Bloomington. By the way thank you IU, you pissed our team off with your “elite” program move by storming the court on a last second shot. We then went on to drop 102 pts on you in the ONLY game we played against you in last year that had significant relevance on the season. While on the way to win our 8th NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. You seem to forget that part. Go over to Assembly hall and stand next to your Sweet 16 trophy case and snap a picture with your last second December win, your 3 games balls and your Sweet 16 trophy case. We will be busy framing our ESPN and SI magazines that say National Champions along with our photos holding the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP trophy with our coaches and players.

Incidentally, I think Matt made too big a deal out of the “non-disclosure” of the fact that he attended IU. Come on Matt, he’s a cartoonist!!! Are the cartoonists who draw Mohammed required to reveal their religion? Maybe Stan Lee should have revealed he was not actually a spider when he drew Spiderman.
Cartoonists should not be held to the same disclosure requirement as hard news guys. That was silly.

Couldn’t agree more with Pett’s comment about business staying separate from editorials. He shouldn’t be concerned with the (unlikely) possibility that his views are going to cost another person their job. If this were the case (that he should consider the business ramifications before penning a cartoon) then he would only draw cartoons he was sure wouldn’t rock the boat and gain the ire of the populace, undermining the entire point of the editorial cartoon. My advice to my fellow UK fans is to not take things so personally.

I kind of defended his cartoon yesterday under a whole First Amendment type argument, but after listening to this smug SOB, I’m totally against the cartoon. Unlike what I originally thought, the guy wasn’t just expressing an opinion of the minority, but he was essentially putting his own uninformed bias into cartoon form. Why is home/away so much better? What’s wrong with a player going to college for one year if their ultimate goal is to play professionally in the NBA? The rule says you have to be one-year removed from HS, so these guys play college to get better and get more recognition than going overseas. It’s no secret that’s what their doing, so why be mad about it? Because IU didn’t get them? Take that negativety elsewhere. I just kept waiting for him to mention how Cal was such a cheater and falter when Matt asked what violations he ever committed or was personally involved in, like every other Cal basher out there. “Uh, cuz man, he just cheats.”

I agree with Matt that this dudes credentials needed to be disclaimed upfront. There wouldn’t have been near the uproar if it said, “Joel Pett is an IU grad from….” Then at least everyone would have originally thought “typical IU hater” and moved on.

Last, to his point that he didn’t think about the cartoon in regards to the economic effect on the paper, how could you not? This is definitely different than any African cartoon, because WERE NOT IN AFRICA. Try writing a Jihad cartoon in Iran or Turkey and see how well that goes over. He would probably be fired and fired upon. Not that basketball in KY and religion in the middle east are equal, but both are take pretty seriously in their respective venues.

So many posting here are completely clueless. Pett doesn’t write for the HL, he draws editorial cartoons for it (and USA Today). @6, he doesn’t report about UK ever. He’s not a reporter. He draws provocative cartoons, which are designed to draw a response from readers (much in the same way Rush Limbaugh says outrageous things which most of you would probably support because Rush speaks the way you think). Pett occupies a very special niche for the paper and does exactly what they want him to do. AND, he’s been hated by conservatives in this town for many many years. A little dust up by a bunch of UK basketball fans over a relatively harmless cartoon isn’t even going to make a blip on the HL editorial board’s radar. I hope you guys enjoyed venting about him, because that’s all that is ever going to come of it.

Matt’s whole bit about “facts” seems strange. As Pett said, it’s an editorial. Hell, it’s a cartoon — he is trying to present an extreme opinion, he is trying to lampoon something he finds to be absurd. He’s not obligated to include the Final Four trip from last year, which he’d presumably cover in dollar signs anyway since he put them there to symbolize how college hoops is a billion dollar industry nowadays.

I think the position Pett is trying to argue is absurd, although I’d like to see whomever just suck it up and make this IU series happen. Cal’s never been proven guilty of any wrongdoing and those dollar signs are, as some have said previously, just beating a dead horse (the IU-UK series cancellation presumably has at least something to do with $ as well). But canceling your paper because you don’t like it? Did you only subscribe to that paper to have all your personal opinions constantly reaffirmed? Pett doesn’t like Cal and he doesn’t care for what UK hoops (and maybe even college basketball in general) have become. Big deal.

And this whole hypothetical about someone losing their job? Just absurd. By the same logic, the New York Times should never run anything critical of the Yankees.

Bottom line.. he is pathetic… smart… but pathetic.. If he were a real man he would discuss something real instead of only doing something to stir the pot and make money.. he has done this his whole career.. so again.. smart.. but again pathetic.
He would be the type of guy you would tap to run a business for you as long as you didn’t care what people thought about you… it would make money bc people would subscribe to his controversial hate.. but you would be disliked by everyone.. depends on what kind of person you are. 70. Nate
    5:40 pm May 9, 2012 Permalink

Honestly, I thought on the two main contentions, Joel Pett didn’t look that absurd. On the contention that it was not a smart business decision, the answer he gave is the right answer. The editorial side and the business side of the newspaper shouldn’t overlap. Even while hammering home that contention about losing someone a job, Matt even admitted that the cartoon probably didn’t equal that many cancelled subscriptions, in all reality. So was it a $50,000 editorial? Highly, highly doubtful, and Matt would even agree. And so even in a ridiculous hypothetical question that didn’t need to be answered, Joel’s answer of distinction between editorial and business side made sense. So to hammer home on that point seemed overdone.

The second contention of needing to come clear about his background doesn’t make sense either. He has the position as editorial cartoonist, and has every right — obviously as Matt said — to share his opinion. It stops at that. Editorial cartoons would be very stupid and boring, even from the good cartoonists, if the cartoonist had to explain his whole past history regarding the opinion presented. A cartoon’s a 5-second opinion and stands and falls on its own.

Don’t get me wrong — the cartoon was shortsighted, a poor attempt at humor, probably a joke that wouldn’t get a laugh, much less a response, if told to 15 friends at a bar (as Joel suggested). The language in the interview was uncalled for, as well. But the interview itself, outside of the language, was far from absurd.

You people who think the H-L should fire him, don’t you understand? This cartoon and the flare-up afterwards will get him a raise. This is exactly why he is on the staff. The H-L is happy about all of this attention they are getting. They think they have done something thought-provoking. Reaction to the cartoon confirms to them that we are all just a bunch of goobers who need to be taught a thing or two. I’m a fan of Matt Jones and his show, and generally I agree with him and his on-air crew on most issues surrounding UK basketball and Coach Cal. But I think this is being blown all out of proportion, and I suspect that the angle Mr. Jones was coming from–that such a cartoon alienates subscribers and threatens jobs; that it’s bad business for the paper–is a smokescreen for the fact that he simply didn’t like the gist of the ‘toon. If Mr. Jones has a problem with the business decision to run the ‘toon, he should have interviewed someone directly responsible for putting the content out there. I also thought that toward the end of the interview he more or less badgered Mr. Pett, coming off more like a tabloid reporter than anything else. And I don’t see that Mr. Pett is obligated to put his IU bona fides as an asterisk to this particular cartoon since we don’t know who he does or doesn’t support (he may be a secret Pepperdine fan for all we know). I don’t agree with the content of the cartoon, but Pett is an editorialist, not a journalist, and shouldn’t be put in the same class as the Pete Thaymels and Pat Fordes of the world.

Great interview. I think your question about the business aspect proved that he’s trying to get attention for himself and not thinking about anyone else. The responsibility to evaluate the business impact falls on the newspaper though, not the cartoonist. Just because someone has an opinion doesn’t mean it has to be published.

Pett is an infantile, inane, irrelevant, elitist imbecile. His juvenile, crudely-cartooned, “editorial,” opinions are so silly, so predictable, so myopic, and so ridiculous, that no one should pay them any attention. Who cares what Joel Pett “thinks”? Certainly, not me. How unprofessional for him to swear on a radio broadcast. His lack of class is telling and provides further insight into his true self. What a smug, arrogant, and miserable human being he must be. It must be difficult for him to go through life being incapable of ever being one of the “cool kids.” Therefore he seeks to punish everyone he secretly envies. Small, small mind. Even smaller man. That’s Pett in a nutshell.

All you guys calling for his head are insane. He is the only good thing the LHL has going for it. I don’t know why a Pulitzer prize winning journalist would even stay there to be honest. We are lucky to have him. You don’t win Pulitzer prizes for cartoons by going with the stream… sometimes you gotta ruffle a few feathers and everyone is making themselves look like babies by getting all worked up over it.

We won the national championship, the joke is on Hoosier boy for taking the time to make one. It is basically no different than some dirty bird fan trolling on here, just to a larger audience.

Matt Jones: Hypothetically, if your cartoon was to abort 15 babies and and rob 24 grandmas how would you feel?
What a joke! The cartoon came no where near costing the HL $50,000. That number is laughable. And the fact that Jones is so upset about it proves Pett’s point, that KSR and the HL are completely different. Like it or not, KSR is a UK cheerleading site. Yes, I love it. Because I am a UK fan. KSR is in no way subjective at all. Pett’s opinion is correct. The games should be played in Lexington and Bloomington. What a great atmosphere it has provided us the past two years. All of this talk about we’re not a traditional program so we’ll only schedule the best teams when we’ve got the best talent is embarrassing. Really wish UK/Cal would dominate the CBBall world after our National Championship, not run from it.

All this backlash is ridiculous. This reminds me of the Danish cartoonist that drew “The prophet Muhammed” and had the muslims ready to kill him a few years ago. PDXCat hit it right on the head. Matt Jones is a bigger douche than Pett. That entire interview sucked.
Also, Cal IS scared to play Indiana at Rupp and at Bloomington, he said so his self. “It’s all about protecting these players” = scared. It’s seems like KSR will back Calipari no matter what he does. I love Cal and I love UK too, but lets not lose our sense of reality here and that reality is, Cal doesn’t want to lose to Indiana at Rupp and he doesn’t want his freshman to get rattled in Bloomington again. He can blow as much smoke as he wants but anyone with half a brain can see what the reasoning behind his decision is. He would be one hell of a car salesman though, that’s all I have to say.

92: Drop the #1ukfan moniker. It doesn’t fit. Try HOO HOO, or maybe Pett’s Backdoor Brother. There is equal justification for playing games in neutral sites, it just depends on your point of view. Sure, Bloomington was a pressure cooker this year, and UK lost on a last second shot. Look what happened on a neutral court. Which is more relevant to a national championship? Neutral court. Bigger venue = greater revenue for both teams as well, and the venue favors neither team. You seem to forget that alternating Indiana and Kentucky neutral sites was the norm for this rivalry for 20 years. Where do you get that “all about protecting the players” = scared? Miller and Teague both got knocked to the floor by crazed fans rushing the court in that crackerbox Assembly Hall. I wondered at the time why there hasn’t been more security in place to prevent fans rushing the floor in every big time college game. If one of our starters had received a season-ending injury in that melee, and you were their coach, would you support a long-term contract that affirmed that behavior and venue?

Pett admitted that facts didn’t matter. I found that to be utterly amazing.

The second thing that he said that caught me off guard is that he stated his paper is accused of being a big booster for UK. Really? The home of Jerry Tipton? The Lex Herald is guilty of ripping UK every chance they get with articles rife wih negative points of view, but also print out pictoral specials of the Kentucky teams so them can sell a lot of papers. Boosters of the program? The Lex paper is considered anti Kentucky by the majority of UK fans that I know.

#97 – probably 0. If you didn’t like the paper already, you probably didn’t subscribe to it in the first place. I bet the Herald loves all the publicity. Never understood why the Herald should be viewed as a cheerleader for UK, going back to the 80s scandal.

Dose of stupidity, why don’t we just play every game on a neutral court then! Who cares about where it’s been played in the past. I like having them come to Rupp and I like having the chance to beat them in front of all their asshole fans. That’s another thing, quit crying about the fans rushing the court. It’s not like thats going to happen every other year, you’re scared to.
HackRichards, You sir are retarded. How is that a LIBERAL mentality??? You have it backwards, liberals actually care about people. He is doing his job, besides, that was a stupid hypothetical question. No one is going to lose their job because this guy drew a freakin cartoon. To say he should think of his co-workers when drawing his cartoons is just ridiculous. But then again, most of the people posting on here are ridiculous as well.
All you people are a bunch of cry babies.I think you all need to take a step back, look at the big picture and ask yourself “how important is this really?”. A newspaper in the heart of Kentucky cannot harm UK. IT’S IN THE HEART OF KENTUCKY. No one should care what this guy thinks.

You always have to consider the source when trying to understand people and when the source comes from Indiana there is no source. I dont know why any UK fan would care about any of this stuff because we are on top and will be for sometime, National champions in men basketball, womens bball team went to final 8 , baseball team ranked in top ten and overall are entire sports program is ranked No. 2 overall in the country at this time. Indiana is the program that didnt want to continue the series and they pulled the plug not UK or BBN so dont worry about the petty stuff that all other programs worry about … we dont need to worry they all worry about UK and BBN.
