Somewhere lost in all the excitment over DeMarcus Cousins’ smile, the build-up for the blogger contest and the KSR Hollywood Squares is that the Bucks version of Jodie Meeks has been looking like the UK version of Jodie Meeks in the NBA Summer League so far. The Vegas session (which is my favorite) is only two-games deep for the Bucks, but the 41st pick in last month’s draft is already making a strong impression. In his debut against the Mavs, Jodie-odie-dopalicious (<— stole that from someone in the contest) went for a team-high 14 and then followed up with 16 last night against the Cavs. If you watched the game, you know that scoring 16 points while Brandon Jennings treated the game like the American Gladiators competition where he had to get the ball in the hole as many times as possible is no small feat. Also, Milwaukee’s director of scouting took to the telecast and raved about Jodie’s on-ball defense and talked of how surprised they were to get him at 41. Basically, people in the Bucks front office seemed to be very, very pleased with their #20.
But, what was interesting about the start to Jodie’s career is this article in the Las Vegas Sun that says new Vegas resident and fellow member of UK’s 2006 recruiting class, Derrick Jasper, watched in support of his buddy on Friday when he made his NBA debut. The point guard from Paso Robles, who was actually the higher ranked of the two coming out of high school, had a lot of good things to say about Jodie and supported his decision to leave UK early, saying that playing at UK is essentially like being a pro already and that Jodie is mentally and physically tough enough to handle it. But, he also admitted he was surprised.
If you have some time to waste, check out the article. Jodie also has some very nice things to say about UK.
