Jimbo Fisher says Stoops did not interview for UK job

On Saturday, CBS Sports reported that Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops had interviewed for the Kentucky job, citing an anonymous source. This morning, FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher threw water on the report, telling the media “Mark has not interviewed for the job.”

Is Fisher, who is dealing with his own share of coaching rumors, blowing smoke or did CBS get it wrong? Was he referring to another Mark? Did Stoops fail to mention the interview to Stoops in their Monday morning meeting? Will we ever get an answer to these questions? Why do you drive on the parkway and park in the driveway?

All this talk about the next coach is really getting old. UK football will continue to suck for the next 5 years as Barnhart doesn’t have a clue what to do.

Maybe he was too embarassed to tell Fisher he interviewed for the UK job.

Please hire Mike MacIntyre while the fanbase is acting familiar with him, he would be as good as any hire possible and Butch Jones Mark Stoops or Bobby Petrino aint walking through that door.

If Stoops did interview for the job and UK is going a different direction, wouldn’t it be in Fishers best interest to say Stoops never interviewed instead of saying his DC didn’t get the UK job?

More I read about Mac, I like him. He runs a clean program, and he would be coming into a better situation than he did at San Jose. Oh, and another riddle… why do women have a pair of panties, but just ONE bra???

If stoops did interview, and we hire Mackintyre, that would be a typical Mitch blue light special. Stoops is better for the long run. Auburn has stoops on their list. What SEC team has Macintyre on their list?

BREAKING NEW: There is no job opening at UK, this has all been a joke to guage fan interest in Joker and predicting season ticket sales. He will return next year and bring in Archer as DC and Hudson as OC.

  14. It could be one of those “It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is” things. He may have spoken with a headhunter (an independent contractor) or someone like that and he (and UK) has plausible deniability. CM Newton once said that happens all the time.

Matt Jones often asks why would X coach choose UK over the other available schools (Tenn,, Auburn, Arkansas, etc.). The thinking is, Kentucky is such a historically bad football program that no coach would coach here if another job offer was presented. Kentucky fans want the big name hire, and want to make a splash with some name recognition. Matt Jones has often challenged callers by asking, “What big name coach is going to come to Kentucky?”. The callers respond with, ‘Generic Big Name (Gruden)’ and Matt replies, “they’re not coming here” and “why would they come here over X”. We True Blue Kentucky fans overvalue the allure of our HC position. However, Matt has also stated that if Kentucky could get the ‘best possible coach’ money would not be an issue. Ergo, my response: Why would coach X come to UK over every other school? Answer: Insanely large contract. We all want the job at the classiest establishment, but we’d all happily work in a crappier place if the Price Is Right.

To this Matt Jones has replied, intelligently, “How do you think Cal would like it if football coach made more money than him? Thats just not going to work.”
Here is where I strongly disagree. Lets get one thing straight, this past year, with abysmal attendance UK football was responsible for more revenue than UK basketball in its Championship year. Coach Cal will be the highest paid basketball coach and he’s wonderful, but it should not be his concern (and I dont think he would care one bit) what a coach for a different sport makes. Should coach mitchell be concerned that he makes a fraction of what Cal does? No. Why? Because its a different sport. Granted the interest level in UK basketball outweighs the interest level in football, partly because of a tradition for winning vs. a tradition of losing, respectively, and partly because we’re UK, but Football is where the money is.

Why do I mention all of this in this thread? Because we, the UK fans do not want Stoops, MacIntyre, Jones, or any other unproven up and comer or retread. We want a winner and we want one now. Presuming for a moment that everything Matt Jones has said is accurate: 1. UK is crappy job, 2. Big Name coaches wont come to UK when they have better offers, and 3. We cant pay a coach more than Cal, then the obvious answer for head coach is Bobby Petrino. KSR has already noted that no other SEC team is offering him a position. This means, UK being a crappy job doesnt matter. If Barnhart wants to show the fan base he has a pair, he needs to realize what we all already know, its not everyday UK has the ABILITY to land a proven winner at the peak of his coaching career, and when that person comes along (with whatever baggage) you’ve got to show you have the testicular fortitude to make a gutsy decision.

Matt Jones, I love you, but put that in your pipe and smoke it.

We don’t need another, Barnhart yes man. Macintyre has had one good year and no good recruiting classes even by WAC standards. He doesn’t poop gold and piss diamonds. He is a mediocre name with experience with mediocre to bad football teams. He will come to uk and get mediocre recruits. He will put up mediocre numbers each year. And in five years after multiple 4to 5 win performances he and Barnhart will be fired.

#18 – Excellent post. I tend to agree with you for the most part. Kinda feel for Mitch, though; if he hires Petrino, 1/2 the fanbase will be enraged. If he passes on him, the other 1/2 will be!! Part of me would like to think he’s learned his lesson & deserves another chance. On the other hand, hiring him would be like re-hiring Billy G if Cal left. I’m still on the fence.

Barnhart needs to stay away from defensive head coaches and coordinators. UK can not win with defense because the good defensive recruits go the Alabama’s etc of college football.

UK needs to hire a high tech offensive coach who hopefully can score enought points to have a winning season and give some excitment to the fans.

    # 18,,,,,Barnhart is an idiot. No way he will hire Petrino,,,,makes to much sense. He will dive off into the world of up and coming coaches and in three years ( if he is still here ) he can start another one man coaching search.
