University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Jay Bilas makes a fair point…

American University’s Stephen Lumpkins is returning to school for the 2012-13 basketball season after a brief stint in the Kansas City Royals’ farm system in Arizona. That brief stint included a 2-1 record in 10 appearances as starting pitcher for the AZL Royals in 2011, and 0-0 record with a 19.64 ERA in 3 2/3 innings this season. It also included a $150,000 signing bonus and what the Washington Post described as “the life of a pro athlete” in July of last year.

Jay Bilas doesn’t get it.

Unlike Enes Kanter’s situation, Lumpkins amateur basketball status went unscathed because he was collecting checks for playing professional baseball. NCAA rules allow a student to pursue a pro career in one sport while maintaining amateur status in another. That’s why Brandon Weeden was driving around a brand new truck (courtesy of the New York Yankees) while chasing a Heisman trophy at Oklahoma State.

Oh, and don’t even get Bilas started on Missy Franklin. The swimmer took home $100,000 from the Olympics and will be eligible to swim for one lucky NCAA school once she graduates high school.

In case you forgot… Enes Kanter turned down money in order to keep his amateur status so he could attend college in the States. The NCAA ruled him ineligible for accepting roughly $33,000, that was used to cover educational and travel expenses. That’s a little more than one-fifth of Lumpkins signing bonus with the Royals.

I think we all agree with Bilas: Fix it.

No Consistency At All.

We certainly need rational-minded folks at the top at the NCAA. It’s like there are only the nerdy-types that are the presidents of schools.

Also, is Matt referring us to a website he’s used with an ad for RussianLoveMatch.com up top?

If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?

As always Bilas is spot on. The logic and inconsistencies coming from the governing body of the NCAA is ridiculous. The most current example is so typical. Go get ’em Jay.

    13) And i’ll bet if Kanter had tried to player for IU and was ruled ineligible, you would be the first one to say “this isn’t fair.” So maybe you should get a life and get off of UK’s board.

    P.S. How’s that sweet 16 loss taste?

$150K is peanuts compared to the $1 million signing bonus given to St. John’s forward Amir Garrett by the Cincinnati Reds last summer. Garrett went on to play basketball at St. Johns the next semester and is being given the freedom to play baseball in the summer and basketball at St. John’s in the fall & spring. He will be allowed to make a decision as to his future at a time of his choosing.

  31. Han
    2:52 pm August 14, 2012 Permalink

Even though he’s still got some Duke and ACC homer in him, Bilas really does see through a lot of the BS and call the NCAA on it.

Maybe one day we really will see a separate body in the NCAA, run by someone like Bilas, that will investigate and rule on issues and do so with consistency based on precedent. Versus just playing favorites and worrying about bankrolls the way Emmert does.

    29) You can lose at least part of your eligibility (miss games) as an athlete if you accept any payment at all (including prizes) for competing in tournaments and such. They just up and decided at some point to ignore the Olympics and related earnings, which again, kinda goes in the face of the so-called amateurism of NCAA athletes.

    30) Curious… What makes Bilas a clueless idiot? Bilas seems like the only college hoops commentator that actually DOES have clue. It takes a lot for a UK fan to like a Dookie, but, IMHO, Bilas has shown nothing but class. He regularly defends UK when they should be defended. If you think Bilas is a clueless idiot, then maybe it’s you that should get a clue…

So, Brian Cashman is from Lexington, so we get him to sign our recruits to minor league baseball contracts for a significant sum of money and then they have money while they are on campus and then the NCAA can’t do anything about it.

You mean Missy Franklin gets to keep her money from her medals and still swim in the NCAAs?

I love Missy, but that isn’t exactly right. Or wait, maybe that IS exactly right and we got the Kanter decision wrong. Either way, they can’t one be wrong and the other right …. can they?
