James Coley will not join Stoops’ staff

CBS Sports reports that it is unlikely Florida State OC James Coley will join Mark Stoops at Kentucky. Stoops will now have to look elsewhere for an offensive coordinator and many think Texas Tech’s Neal Brown could be the choice. Coley is a great recruiter so this is not great news, but Stoops can still make an impact hire at the position.

Absolutely terrible news if true. Coley was a huge part of the master plan for UK to finally make inroads in Florida.
darn shame. We could use his recruiting chops
Off topic but a huge win. UK Hoops came from 14 down in 2nd half to beat the tards at loserville. Great job ladies. Now work on making layups and shots within 5 feet and go to the Final 4.
No Stripper Poley? But that nickname was going places!
5-looks like brown town instead.
Baugh!!! Why not? come join us in the SEC man!! more than welcome.
He’s an OC who doesn’t call plays. is that who you really wanted??
I am friends with a TON of FSU alumni and from everything I’ve heard Coley isn’t much of an OC but he is one of the best recruiters in the game. Don’t get me wrong I would have loved to have had Coley but with Stoops being a defensive guy I think I am ok with a more qualified offensive mind than Coley leading the offense. Still sucks we won’t have his recruiting in Florida though.
Louisville does NOT get FSU in the Orange Bowl. They get Florida in the Sugar Bowl, instead
Well crap. I was banking on him coming with stoops. More stereotypical uk football program letdown news. I hope we can get brown. We needed the recruiting with guy, this hurts big time.
#4 – are you effin serious? get a life you freak. This is SEC football we are talking.
This must be the reason why Stoops said they would recruit Florida a little bit. Coley turned down the OC offer to join him at UK. Neal Brown would be a great get but you need top talent to make it work successfully. We have some very talented guys with Towles, Sweat, Collins & Robinson. But you need to be able to recruit Florida. Stoops must be very confident that he can make up the slack by recruiting in Ohio. Time will tell…
I am so proud of my Cards! We are winning the national title this year!
Is this news? I thought since Stoops said earlier that he had to go on the road and interview OC that we all knew Coley wasn’t coming to UK.
I think a potential reason no Cooley is because he never has really ran the show yet as an offensive coordinator because at FL St Fisher called the plays. I night be wrong on my information but that’s the way I understand Cooleys role at St. For Stoops he has to hit a home run on an offensive coordinator so while Cooley is a great recruiter, he’s a little unproven as a offensive coordinator who calls the plays.
Okay, we got a new football coach. In two or three years we’ll be looking again. Now let’s get back to talking about what we do well: BASKETBALL!!!
Really makes you wonder if he’s happy where he is, wants a better offer, or like some people guessed, he wasn’t offered OC, but just Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant HC?
15) Yeah, seems like Stoops is looking for a proven, exciting Offensive Coordinator, and it’s possible he didn’t actually offer OC to his colleague. We may never know, though as recent weeks have shown, we don’t know if Coley will definitely not come or not yet. Most of the people online who were hoping Coley would come were slotting him in as Recruiting Coord and still putting Neal Brown as the hopeful OC.
I just want us to snake someone else’s coordinator at a good program or find a top guy at a smaller program who’s not ready for a head coaching spot (if they want one). Not every coordinator even wants to be HC.
Any thoughts on Louisville vs Florida?
Da Ville is moving up to big boy football this time.
If Stoops can establish a talent pipeline from Cincinnati, he could make up for getting limited talent from Florida.
And hey all UL losers, guess you might get your wish to see what your made of and run with the Big Boys… Good luck with the Gators LOL. They ain’t no Rutgers or Southern Miss you losers. Time for a real test losers!!!!
11} It is still UK and they are having success, unlike football. Nothing wrong with showing them support, especially after a huge win over a top rated team and rival.
FSU scored 21 points against Georgia Tech last night with better talent. Who wants that? Anybody?
Neal Brown give you Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Does that make up for Florida?
Hey #23, not trying to disagree with you but we cant assume all Off Cord’s are good recruiters. Maybe Brown is a great recruiter who knows but we all know he is a great play caller and that is very important.
Was’nt completly sold on Coley since he is not currently calling plays inside of an Offensive. Neal Brown, awesome choice
We needed Cooley but not as the offensive coordinator. Neal Brown is the better choice. You win in the SEC with either great talent or a great scheme. Coley would have helped us get better talent, Whereas Brown will give us a great scheme, assuming we land him. Don’t overlook the inroads D.J. Eliot has in Florida either, he’s a very good recruiter.
Any one know anything about how Clemons is? And if he play a major role next year especially after all the injuries? Haven’t heard anything on him in a while, kid was a stud
20) . . . What ‘s it been, what . . .27 YEARS AND COUNTING. Since you’ve beat Florida. . . HUMILATING ISN’T IT??? good luck trying to get back to the LITTLE CEASARS BOWL level!! HAHAHAHAHAH!
Hey this is still KY football. We are used to not getting 4 and 5 stars. Stoops will soon find out just how hard it is to get the type of talent needed to compete in the SEC to come to Lexington. Coley was his hope of getting talent to travel north to the Bluegrass. Guy is going to make a lot of money to discover KY is a roundball school. Just like our past offense- I say the guy is 3 and out.
Damn! I was more excited about getting Coley than I was Stoops.
We will be fine without Coley. Good gosh he is at Florida St and recruits mostly Florida kids. There is enough talent to stockpile Fl, Miami and Fl St. I’m sure he is good but it’s not the end of the world fellas. I would think Fl St would still be beating us out on the Fl kids regardless of Coley.
Coley’s offense is boring as hell to watch. Plus I hear he doesn’t even call the plays? WTF?
IM the sexiest pick.
Coley was being targeted as either a Co-Coordinator or Assoc. Head Coach & Recruiting Coordinator…probably was never going to run the offense or call plays.
32. It’s not Coley’s offense…it’s Fishers.
Don’t understand why FSU has an OC if their head coach calls their plays; they run the option way too much. Has many coaches as the Stoops family of football coaches know, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a coach.
While this does stink kinda UK is going to get the recruiting tie they need. DJ Elliot will be our DC and he is the most important one with the recruiting connections in Florida and the South so we can still tap the Florida players. If UK could sway Neal Brown that would be best. You would then make waves in the state of Texas. So now we would have connections with Florida with Elliott and stoops, Ohio with stoops and Texas with brown… It could wind up working out better for UK in the long run.
Where is this CBS Sports report? I can’t seem to find it?
Now I’m seeing it…if true this makes sense to me if you are Coley…he needs to establish his identity as an OC and he was not going to have that chance at UK either.
Me and old Claude Bassett are available for the OC and recruiting cord. We have great ties here and folks love us. We’ll even do it for chump change and free drinks. Plus let ol Claudie hit the buffet a few times a day at Shoneys. Fellas it sounds like this is plan to me? Oh and I can even get Majors to help coach up Stoops on the Defensive side of things. I’m hearing yes and I think this is gonna be f ing awesome dudes! It’s good to be back.
U of L gets Florida. If any of you Louisville fans think you are going to beat the Gators,,,,take more meds. Just try and keep it within 39 points.
36 – I agree with this. Ever since Coley’s name was mentioned, I was in the middle on whether I wanted him anyways. Yes, he is a phenomenal recruiter with great connections in Florida, but he doesn’t call the plays for FSU. Given Stoops’s defensive background, I think its more important that the offensive staff be better with calling plays and player development.
He is a great recruiter in south FL when he can call and say, “This is Coach Coley from Florida State.” He would probably still be pretty good saying he was from Florida, Georgia, Auburn, or Miami. But no one is good enough to get many, if any, 4+ star recruits away from Florida to go to Kentucky. I’m sorry. It just won’t happen.
And we’re already quite good at getting everyone else’s junk as indicated by the fact that 13 of our current 14 commits are all rejects of other SEC schools, including 6 from FL.
