Jamal Mashburn to receive honorary doctorate

Jamal Mashburn

That’s Dr. Mashburn to you

Quick, call your primary care physicians and fire them, because it looks like there is a new doctor in town. UK announced today that Jamal Mashburn will receive an honorary doctorate degree from the university. And don’t forget to request that they transfer your file/records to your new doc. Such a hassle if you forget that part.

This decision was the call of the UK Board of Trustees. The degree will be in the area of “Humanities.” This honorary title will make Mashburn arguably the most professionally diverse to ever wear the Kentucky Wildcat uniform. Apart from being a retired NBA player, he is a part owner in 38 Outback Steakhouses, 39 Papa John’s joints, three Dunkin’ Donuts, multiple car dealerships in Kentucky, plenty of real estate, and even thoroughbred horses.

That, my friends, is what you call of Jack Jamal of all trades. And yes, that horrible pun is what I will be leaving you with this evening. Enjoy your Sunday night and you better be tuned into either Wrestlemania of Mad Men tonight.

Class act and well deserved-A nice move by the board in an era of UK ball where we need to celebrate examples like Mash for our stars-And also smart to forge a new Non-Pitino bond with him.

Honorary degrees are stupid. I was going to type another sentence about how stupid they are but I realized the first sentence was enough.

What’s wrong with earning actual degrees? Shouldn’t that be what people actually aspire to do?

No Mad Men for me tonight. I’ll be watching Vikings on History Channel instead! Either way congrats to Mash on the honor.

Lady Tards to the title game as well. At least our coach is working on his dance moves for Madness. What a fraud he is.

Proud of him. Loved him as a player, & he has represented the Big Blue Nation well. I’ll never forget when we got our 2000 win; he was commentating & got choked up talking about how proud he was to be a part of the University. I’ll gladly call him Dr.

Well they just keep going and NO ONE is stopping them !!Does anyone care or know how we are to react to being humiliated by this nightmare of a basketball season !! If anyone cares we are no longer the power school in the state ! Sugar Bowl , final game for both basketball teams !!!

Congrats to the Monster Mash. I still recall the 50 grand he gave UK when he signed his first NBA contract. A true class act and an incredibly good businessman. Wish the world had a lot more people with even half of his class and integrity!! Love ya, man!!

    18. LOL Not quite, but Louisville is doing awfully well lately. Congratulations and welcome back to relevancy. Historically, though, Louisville fans largely seem to only support the team when it’s doing well, making the claim of ‘Best College Sports Town in America’ very debatable. Downtown Louisville, being on the river, is kind of nice to visit though.

    Physician = M.D.
    Doctorate in Humanities = Ph.D.

Please don’t have your medical records transferred to the latter.

Happy for Mash in any case.

    4) Mash has earned the right to root for who ever he wants! If not for him UK wouldn’t be relavent now!

    15) I think it was actually $500, 000 he gave the university.

Mash was ” the most important recruit” in bringing back the program at the University of Kentucky. His class, demeanor, and the way he has represented himself should merit at least this recognition.

I like Mash but I’m still confused on the justification for this. We have many successful players to have come through UK and many of them are successful in business (and I question how you define success when we are talking about a wealthy person investing in other peoples’ ventures). What makes Mash so exceptional that a doctorate should be conferred on him?

As a Cat fan and a native Kentuckian I will not be pulling for Louisville tonight. I had enough of Louisville & Jefferson Co when I worked in Elizabethtown for the KSP. I most likely will watch some thing else. Pitino makes me sick with the way he treated his family with his “Table Affair”. UL also for praising him for it
