J-Lo Talks QB Competition

Lorenzen practicing in his first year with Hal Mumme

This morning Jared Lorenzen joined Ryan Lemond in studio, further spreading the football excitement with Spring practice only a week away. If there’s anyone as excited as the Hefty Lefty, it’s THIS GUY. Entering Spring practice, the biggest question mark lies in the QB position and their ability to pick up Neal Brown’s Air Raid offense. Lorenzen is probably the most credible source, having great success while playing in the Air Raid and also experiencing 3 coaching changes in his career at UK. Today J-Lo was asked about his opinions on the three QBs and who he thinks will emerge from Spring practice as the starter.

On Pat Towles:

“I’m lucky, for the fact that I know Pat and I know the offense. Neal has put his own twist on things and will run the ball a little more than when I did with Coach Mumme. He’s got the tools, and he understands that. I mean this lovingly, but will he grow up and do it? Now you’re out of high school, you’ve played half a year in college, now it’s time to step up and make those plays by becoming a student of the game. He can do it, I know he can.

On Jalen Whitlow:

I’ve said this a hundred times, I think he’s Randall [Cobb]. I think he’s one of those guys you can put in as a change-up quarterback. Let him learn slot [receiver] because he is too valuable to be sitting on the sideline.

Who does offense favor the most?

“Probably Maxwell. I loved what he was doing last year; up until he got hurt he was great. He’s a vet that understands what it takes to pick up a new offense. I just think this is something that he can really learn and grow into.”

Those are some pretty telling quotes. Towles probably has some maturity issues. Everyone calling for the coaches to play Towles can keep the chatter down this year. Maxwell Smith was so good in the previous coaches eyes that they changed their whole system to better fit him. Now the best possible thing happened to him, they brought in a coach that will utilize his skills to the fullest. If he stays healthy, Maxwell Smith will be the best quarterback in the SEC next year.

J-lo has to say max is qb because if he says Patrick then everyone will be saying he just said that because he coached him in high school.

I just think max is not mobile enough for this system, he doesn’t have to be extremely mobile but a least mobile enough to buy that extra second in the pocket with swarms of NFL/sec d lineman coming after him

Taking quarterback advice from someone, who as a Senior throws a ball backward over his shoulder that is intercepted on a potential go ahead drive against Florida in the 4th quarter, then when interviewed after the game states that he’d do the same thing if given the opportunity because, “I like to try to make things happen”, when other quarterbacks who are freshmen are smart enough to know that plays like that aren’t the best option? YES, I’m still bitter. Great skills with no work ethic and limited football sense < a quarterback with average skills, determined work ethic and a feel for the game. Anyone know who has thrown the most interceptions as a UK qb? Have looked on UK's website and haven't been able to find it. I'm betting on JL or Couch (even on a %age of passes thrown).

Tough to respect a guy who didn’t care enough to be in shape while he was here. There was no excuse for him being such a lard bucket. He had no self pride or self control.

    6. He was so bad he made an nfl roster for 3 years. Oh yeah he also threw for 10k yards. Being in the game against Florida isn’t something many UK qbs have done lately. The good news is there are 3 guys who could win the job.

Lorenzen needed to be active 4 more games on an NFL roster to secure a full pension from the NFL. This naturally gifted athlete ate his way out of football gaining a bunch of weight in the offseason before the Giants cut him. He didn’t work for it when being financially set was at his finger tips. He didn’t coach Towles his senior season at Highlands. Lorenzen quit and was no where to be found around the Highlands campus that year.

max is getting the job if you didnt realise he did get 800 yards in 3 and a half games so basically there u go
and he doest have to be mobile if he’s smart enough to through away the ball he’s fine

I’m surprised at all the negative comments on J. Lo. He’s a Kentucky guy who stayed home and gave us several years of exciting football, and then played for a few years in the NFL. If that’s a bad QB, I say we sign a team full of awful players.

While not the NFL arena football is still a market and teams still have to win. People forget he was so knowledgeable in football an arena team made him the manager and then ended up becoming the Commissioner of the Ultimate Indoor Football League. Not the greatest accomplishment but still shows he has to know something.

wrong! whitlow whitlow whitlow! i will bet anybody base on last yr. dont know way people cant believe it but i have heard he looks the best by far. he is out throwing towles and max is not back yet but im hearing he is ducking the competition. i am starting to think this is a race thing because this guy has the potential to light up the score board. i will go out and say he will be a top 5 stat guy this year in the SEC. joker and sanders jobs was on the line and tried to give the job to towles it was too much separation between them. he is the best we have on campus!
