As part of our CBS Sports college roadtrip this year, Drew, Tomlin and I made our way to East Lansing, Michigan and came away with one conclusion…it was the worst place we visited. Every guy there looked like a greased up “Situation”, the girls were snotty and unattractive, while the town’s hot spot was a series of five bars and (I am not making this up) a video arcade. It just wasnt really our town. But apparently it is Tom Izzo’s town as he announced tonight that he is staying at Michigan State and will be there “for life.” Izzo had contemplated a move to the Cleveland Cavs, but for whatever reason (no assurance from Lebron?), he couldnt pull the trigger and now he will remain the Spartans coach for eternity.
Honestly, I really like Tom Izzo. He is a great coach and people dont realize that on two different occasions, he could have easily been UK’s basketball coach (if Barnhart had reached out to him when he hired Clyde and if he hadnt beaten Louisville when Calipari was hired). Izzo appreciates Kentucky, was close with Tubby and Calipari and is someone that is universally respected. College basketball is better with Tom Izzo in it. Six of the last ten Final Fours have included his Spartans and when he gets his second title (which he will), he will go down as one of the greats to coach the game. So I am happy for him that he is staying…I just hope he enjoys East Lansing more than I did.
Ranking the College Towns of the CBS Trip (for sheer college quality of life):
1. Chapel Hill
7. Cedar Falls
8. East Lansing
9. Morehead (sorry…the only place to go was BW3s…but we loved the people)
