It’s Over: UT 37, UK 17

Well, it wasn’t the storybook send off we were hoping for, to say the least. Kentucky lost to Tennessee, 37-17, finishing the 2012 football season with a 2-10 record (0-8 in the SEC) and ending Joker Phillips’ career as a Kentucky head coach with a loss. Check back later for a full post game recap as well as quotes from Mitch Barnhart’s meeting with the media here soon.

4th and inches x 2, lets getr cute. Also 3rd and 10, let’s throw it 6 yds and hope we break a tackle. The play calling tofay is the perfect epithet to Joker’s tenure as head coach and Sanders’ as OC. The next coach should have never heard of a “bubble screen”. Good riddance all!!!!

So happy that Joker’s character kept it close the first half. Obviously there were some positives that we can build on. Unfortunately, untimely circumstances such as the sky being blue kept us from winning the game.

A game of missed opportunities to top off a season of missed opportunities. I think joker is the one that just brings out the balls at practice and doesn’t actually coach instead of coach cal. This is the worst coached and worst play called team I have ever seen. There is a reason that no one is threatening to hire our assistant coaches away, except for tee Martin because he was the only one worth anything.

  12. Jacob Adam Brooks

Sadly Joker is simply one of the worst football coaches in the country. Being from Ky does not make you a great coach, a good coach, or apparently even a below average coach… in fact it has nothing to do with coaching skills. Unfortunately for UK fans Mitch felt being nice and being a Ky boy was worth enough to give Joker millions of dollars and the keys to the program. Its finally over tnough.

Joker went out in style showing everyone once again why he’s completely inept and why he’s been a total failure. Good for him. He basically defended the fan base’s ire with this showing

Calipari/Mitchell/Henderson…no they don’t count…you keep telling us how Mike Pratt brought us Calipari, but you seem a little short on any evidence.

So I now tell you this, Pratt was OPPOSED to Calipari, so was Leech, but Barnhart told them to sit down and shut up or take a hike and hired Calipari anyway!

I have as much evidence for my statement as you do. So either show us the quotes and sources or just shut up about Prat and Calipari and Barnhart, please…we get it you want Petrino and hate Barnhart.

Not gonna bash this blog for saying Petrino won’t happen (as all of RR is doing), but if we assume he’s a no-hire for Mitch, how would Jones be a homerun? I know there’s supposedly an NFL name (a coordinator or ex-coach, I assume), and a mystery name, but I’d think of Jones more as a double, or a triple at best.

Is there any chance Mitch takes a risk on an up-and-comer like Kingsbury, hoping the fan love of exciting offense overcomes some early struggles, or is Mitch going to play it safe since his popularity is so low after BCG and Joker?

    14) I believe this blog floated the info originally about Mitch being forced to hire Cal the second time around. We all know he was sweet on Crean and guys like that. (Crean has now been successful with Wade and Zeller, but it remains to be seen if he can keep recruiting talent good enough to carry his team).

    25) Did he really say that? That means he expects to make his hire around/after bowl games, which is further evidence he’s not considering Petrino, but also rules out a lot of other names that will take better jobs if offered. We fired Joker early to get a jump on the coaching search, or so fans thought.

Some of you Billy Clyde Haters want to produce any of your blog postings pointing out that BCG was a bad idea, AT THE TIME.

    17. It must be awesome to live out your life by imagining odd fantasies of someone else’s. You have no proof, so you have decided to use the distraction method so people won’t know just how little you actually know. Man, if the fire Mitch and hire Petrino fans were the majority, it would be REALLY annoying to be a part of BBN. Thankfully, most of us are intelligent and realize that we’re going to have to get REALLY lucky on a coaching hire to ever be truly national championship competitive. Tell me the last program that Petrino took over with a losing record the previous year.

  36. Han
    4:14 pm November 24, 2012 Permalink

    32) Other programs have excelled, but we are a basketball school, and indications were Cal wanted our job when we hired BCG, and though Cal had yet to get to the title game at that point, and was still clouded in past stuff, he would’ve been a better hire to many people. And whether other programs have done well or not, football pays for most other sports. If your football program doesn’t make money, your successful Olympic sports go under no matter how good their coaching hires.

During the game they showed some possible UK coaches and had Fulmer on the list. Why would he even be mentioned? He was in a commercial with a bunch of old retired coaches and fit right in with them. San Jose St. and Utah St. are doing well today. Does that mean they have great coaches because they’re beating Idaho and Air Force? UL sure is lucky. All Rutgers had to do is beat an average Pittsburgh. There goes UL’s quest for the national championship. Okay guys, when’s Mitch going to make the announcement?

29 – Jones isn’t a homerun, but if Mitch isn’t looking for a “quick fix” than he probably isn’t thinking of a homerun the same way the fans are. I think Mitch wants someone like Rich Brooks or Joker Phillips that he can trust with the program. Mitch would rather fail with the next coach and hire someone with charater than win with the next coach and hire someone without character.

I posted this in another thread. I think it fits here. – I know we want instant success in Football. What was it that the Arizona Cardinals, Dennis Green said after getting spanked by the Bears I believe, “They were who we thought they were!”. Gentlemen, we are in the SEC. UK is a perennial middle of the pack team tops. Sure we can get Bobby Petrino. Bobby will get us to a couple of 7-5 seasons maybe even 8-4. He will then become a hot product cause his screw-ups will be a couple of years removed. He will then get a big time job (which UK is not!). Then UK is back to square one. Lets get past the names and look at the resumes. Urban Meyer and Nick Saban were up and coming coordinators and smaller time head coaches at one point. Why not take the route of doing our due diligence and hiring a great up and comer? Do you think the Florida faithful thought that an ex Utah coach would take them where Urban did?

How many multi-million dollar chances does Barnhart get again?

And the loss of the fan base… this is unprecedented.

I remember the Bill Curry days, and that stadium wasn’t nearly that empty then.

Many UK fans didn’t want another year of Joker, they saw the writing on the wall.

Barnhart decided to give him another year. Why? If you not going to give him 2 more years (which Barnhart said would be necessary) then why give him half of what’s necessary?

This is the decision of an AD that can’t even give his selected coach the time he knows is necessary to succeed. So in essence, the extra year was just a snub in the fans face, letting us know who’s in charge of a ship going into the ground (since he knew 1 year wasn’t enough).

    1) I don’t disagree. The football hire is vital. No money in football, no money for Fast Pitch Softball. I think Barnhart grasps that.
    2) As to Calipari, my knock on Barnhart is that he seems to follow the Conventional Wisdom too much…Joker as “Coach-in-Waiting” (A popular idea at the time) and that Calipari came with too much “baggage.” And it’s a flaw.
    3) But for all the BCG naysayers, just point out where you said, AT THE TIME, BCG isn’t a good hire…I’ll wait. That’s different than saying Calipari is > than BCG. That may be true, even then, but then Calipari’s >Crean/Pitino too, but that doesn’t mean that UoL or IU have bad coaches.

Barnyard struck out with a long list of candidates.
    No one wanted this job.
Rich Brooks, a fine gentleman, was his last option and he even had to talk him into it.
Brooks worked hard, had some superstars to work with and that era is looked upon as a good one only in comparison with the dismal failures that proceeded and followed it.
All we can do is hope our AD gets damn lucky with this hire.
Even if he does, he’ll still need to get the basketball addicted legislature to come up with enough funds to upgrade UK to the 21st century.

They have played exactly no one.
They would have won maybe two games in the SEC and only if they had a crack at Auburn in addition to us.
With a decent coach and staff this year’s UK team could have had the same record with their schedule.

    quick riding freakin Barharts sack.

    Invective an excellent argument…

Well then just pull out a contemporaneous Courier, H-L, SI article, blog posting that points our BCG’s obvious failings…

I believe the phrase is “hindsight is 20/20.”

First of all, we don’t have an archery team.
As a former student athlete in an Olympic sport at UK, please spare me the “other sports don’t matter” BS.
I worked as hard for my scholarship as any football or basketball player, many of whom were my very best friends.
If you don’t think it is a good thing for my alma mater to matter in Women’s BB and some of the other “minor” sports, you are grossly uninformed.
You insult all of us who proudly wore the Blue and White, competing our hearts out then and continuing to root for UK whenever and wherever they compete.

    88) You worked hard, and you have your fans, but your programs wouldn’t be able to offer scholarships if it weren’t for the money from football (and to a lesser extent, basketball). When track or volleyball or any other “Olympic” sport plays on Primetime or brings in the money football does, then their success can matter when talking about the success of the AD. A failing football program in the SEC will get ADs fired no matter how good the golf team is.

But I agree with supporting UK.

    Kentucky Football History (1881 – 2012)

UK Record Before Mitch Barnhart: 1881 – 2002

    Wins .. Losses .. Total Games .. % Won
    528 …. 511 ……. 1039 ……. 50.82

UK Record Since Mitch Barnhart: 2003 – 2012

    Wins .. Losses .. Total Games .. % Won
    53 …… 71 …….. 124 ……. 42.74

Get your facts KY fans … Facts unfortunately “so-called independent” websites are failing to share with you

Mitch Barnhart has failed the University of Kentucky Football program. The cumulative record is his number. Fan attendance is his number.

Fans stopped going to the games as a message to the University that we no longer trust his leadership.

The numbers above should speak loud and clear. His discretion has failed and we know it.

    90 – Failed in football….yes
    Failed in other sports…..no

He is well liked by President Eli and is sitting on a pretty sweet contract that Lee Todd gave him before he left. While we as fans have sent the message, it will take more than boycotting games to get Mitch out of his position.

A lot will also depend on the success of the football team. The bottom line is that as much as fans hate Mitch, how long will they stay away if they don’t agree with his hire? The reality is that even if its not Petrino or another big name, I’m of the belief that many fans will give the new coach a chance to prove them wrong.

#59 The University pays very little of the coaches contract, so I think Mitchell will be OK.
Joker is gone and should have been fired. I do still think the choice to hire him was the right choice. Giving him the 3 years was the right move. Hind sight is 20/20. However at the time it was the best move Joker just failed at the chance.

Zero faith in Mitch hiring a football coach in the SEC. Maybe if it is track or soccer hiring I would have more faith. He can not put aside his own moral compass to make a hire to bring the fanbase back to the stands.

Joker was always a bad hire but for some reason Mitch was desperate to keep him. I trusted Brooks’ judgment that he was ready. All of us were wrong. I have had season tickets for 40 years but will not make 41. I’m done.

All you “fans” trashing Barnhart are totally STUPID! I guess you figure he just got lucky with Calipari. Joker, with much of his life invested in Kentucky seemed like a good fit. But it didn’t work out so now we’re moving on. After watching the Billy Clyde saga, it seems like you people would realize coaching is a tough job and finding the right person to do it is even tougher. You people need to STFU because you make Kentucky fans seem like a bunch of cry babies.
