Is Tubby coming back to the SEC?

In an article about Billy Gillispie’s continued flirtation with Texas Tech (no formal offer yet), the Fort Worth Star Telegram says that Tubby Smith is close to accepting Arkansas’ head coaching position and has already held face-to-face meetings with the school.  If Smith were to take the job, he would return to the SEC, where he has a career 139-53 record, including 5 SEC Tournament and 5 regular season titles.  It would also mean the end of a disappointing era in Minnesota, that saw him fail to make the Sweet 16 (or advance past the first round of the NCAA Tournament) for the first time at any of his coaching stops.  And an antsy and critical fanbase, which yearns for a return to its uptempo and chaotic glory days, can look forward to 40 Minutes of *YAAAWWWNNNN*.

Good for Tubby, though.  He’s better than Minnesota.

If he takes the job he’ll be coming in on John Pelphry’s top 10 recruiting class. At Minnesota Tubby did what he does. He takes teams to the NCAA tourney and loses in the first round. If he goes to Arkansas, he’ll have early success on Pelphry’s recruiting class (if they stay). He’ll take all the credit because this will be new class. Then he won’t be able to recruit. It’s time for Tubby to retire.

I’m a Tubby supporter/defender, but man, the Arkansas fan base can’t be happy about this development. That is, if they truly want to get back to “40 Minutes Of Hell” like they used to have under Richardson. I love Tubby, but his style is definitely more Big-10 (11, 12?), even though he hasn’t succeeded at UM.

I wish him the best and I look forward to spanking his rear once or twice a season!

I really think that Arkansas should let Pelphrey at least have one year with the top 5 class HE has coming in next year. But, once again, Tubby will let someone else build the talent up at an SEC school and come in to take over…and he will do well I’m sure…

Tubby is a great coach and has become a miserable recruiter. He’ll win the SEC West with Pelphrey’s players including his top 10 recruiting class, then everyone will wonder why Arkansas sucks so bad 3 or 4 years from now…

I was thinking the Ga Tech job would have been better for Tubby with the ease of recruiting in Atlanta. But maybe Arkansas is better. The SEC West is a much easier place to build back a program. And Arkansas produces some decent talent.

so Tubby is negotiating a new job while currently holding another. Well well well, looks like a tiger really cant change his stripes. TUbby had already accepted the Minn job while still coaching UK in the SEC tournament. I almost hope its true so that Minn can see whats its like to have your coach, a guy youve invested MILLIONS in, sticks you in the back, drags your program down with it, and then leaves

21, the 1-10 finish was what I was talking about. Instead of his focus being on Mn is was on finding another job. Did the same thing at UK, sniffing out Mn in Dec of his last year and the program suffered mightly because of it. Hardly the classy thing by an alledgedly classy coach.

    14) Yeah. I assume that he’ll hop on a plane and then several hours later Arkansas will ask permission to talk to him, which would mean he’d already agreed. Then he’ll call his team to tell them he has to do what’s right for him and his family, and then the seniors won’t hear from him again.

    He needs to just retire.

But I’d be happy to see Tubby in Arkansas and not Mike Anderson.

But he is awful. And if Ark hires him they are retarded. I dont think he has the balls to accept just for the fact of him having to come back to Rupp. It would be fun to see us stomp his lazy pos butt in the ground.

Tubby should go to a big city school so he doesnt have to get up too early to land a couple of recruits. Ark is not for Tubby,no way he recruits there. And someone said Tubby should retire, hell I thought he retired around 2002.

  49. old_school

Tubby is actually a very good coach. He may not be a top-notch reruiter – or maybe he was at one time but has tired of the system of having to deal with the leeches like World Wide Wes and other undesirables.

I’d like to see him land somewhere stable, have a little success and be able to retire with his good name intact and with a good taste in his mouth from his college coaching career.

He was nothing but class at UK and I wish him the best.

I wish Arkansas had given Pelphrey a little more time. I’m not sure he ever had the full-support of the base down in Fayetteville – with probably some Razorback fans never embracing him because of his Kentucky roots.

If WKU had made a coaching change today (they didn’t) Pelphrey may have been a good fit there. I think he’ll find a job somewhere and he’ll have success.

Tubby will never win many SEC titles with anyone except Kentucky. Just look what a failure he is at Minnesota. And he couldn’t even win with Ralph SAmpson III and his 7 foot height. Sampson’s best scoring came from the three point line. Great coaching Tubby. If he couldn’t win a championship at Kentucky he certainly can’t anywhere else.

Wow…would not even consider Tubby for the Arkansas job if I was the AD! I mean, he found little success the last few years at UK, zero in Minn…what the hell makes them think he’ll do anything other than barely win 20 a season while always posting 10 plus losses! They will be a hit and miss NCAA team and rarely make it out of the first round!

Bad move Arkansas, bad move! You’ll want this one back in about 2 – 3 years! Get ready for the new Arkansas slogan…”1 point a min for 40 min of…ah hell, we suck!”

no, he’s not better than Minnesota, there’s a reason that’s where he wound up – Michigan didn’t want him, and neither did any other place that had an opening that offseason… and his agent met with Minnesota for a while before finally “selling them”. I can’t believe Arkansas would be interested in him, if he can’t get MINNESOTA to improve much, he’s not the guy to return Arkansas to Sutton/Richardson goodness. But he WILL have a good recruiting class waiting for him like he has every other stop 🙂

  59. Just saying
    8:14 pm March 14, 2011 Permalink

exactly what did Tubby do to be such a “classy” man?? Was it the Randolph Morris fax that proved his integrity?? Was it taking the Minn job while still coaching at UK, and NEVER informing the UK brass of the move until the day he announced his acceptance at Minn?? Was it the way he threw the Miss St game by intentionally telling Sheray Thomas to move from the FT line while a 90%FT shooter was about to hit the game winner?? Was it the way he attacked Gillispie and UK,as the head of the Coaches association, for recruiting an eighth greader, but when Florida’s Donovan did the EXACT same thing the “Coach’s association” said nothing???

What exactly was so classy about Tubby? Was it because nice? Well if all you have to do is be nice, while constantly back stabbing schools and leaving “like a thief in the night” then he is a nice, “classy” man.

Can hear the talking heads now praising tubbs like he was the one that recruited a good team for once. Wonder if the loser asst. coaches that were with him at UK will get the band back together so to speak and in 3-4 years be sucking like they were at UK when the high of Rick’s recruits and those hs recruits tubbs convinced he was actually going to make the FF4 with the players he brought in ran out.
