Four days ago, Coach Cal nearly coached the Dominican Republic to its first Olympic berth. But was that the last time we’ll see him on the sidelines for the Dominicans? The team will have one more opportunity to punch a ticket to London in another qualifying event next July and it’s unclear if Calipari will be leading the team when that day comes around. Coach Cal told Andy Katz that he is undecided on his future as head coach of the Dominicans.
“Whether I’m coaching this team or not, I’ll help them in any way I can,’’ Calipari said. “The dates may not work out. It may not be something I choose to do. But the appeal is to get them to the Olympics.’’
I believe Coach Cal genuinely cares about this group and wants to see them qualify, but he’ll have to devote all of his time and energy to Kentucky basketball next summer. This was just a one time ploy to get in some work with Eloy and host two the two exhibition games. Calipari can’t afford to step away from Lexington again.
Regardless of who is coaching when the Dominicans continue pursuit of the Olympics next summer, they’ve made a lot of fans in Kentucky and many of us will still be cheering for them, with or without Calipari.
Go Jack Michael Martinez.
