Independence Day (observed)

You knew this was coming, right? If you want the UK live version, go here.

Happy Monday to all of you who are, like me, stuck working on Independence Day (observed). While our lucky brethren are out swimming, grilling, shopping, and attempting to write their name in the air with sparklers (Can it even be done anymore with the cheap ones that have a burn life of. . .like. . 5 seconds? I say no unless your name is Al. Also, is there anything flammable that is harder to get lit than a sparkler? Feels like you go through about 15 matches before you get one started. Ever try to light a sparkler with a sparkler? Torture. You are losing some arm hair with that maneuver.), we get to enjoy tepid ham sandwiches in the break room and stare at the clock until go time. Well, I’m here to help. Let’s hit a couple-few feel good links on the holiday (observed) that celebrates our nation’s birth:

1) Kentucky native and Morehead graduate Willie Blair is profiled in a nice article from ESPN about a man trying to balance his family life with his professional ambitions.

2) The Tennessean has a great article on our new student manager, Zachary Lipson. You know, there are just some really really good people involved with the Kentucky program. Do yourself a favor and read that article. It will make you feel good about the character and nature of the people involved in our program and Martin Newton in particular.

3) Patrick Patterson is awesome. You know it. I know it. Now, it seems the fans of the Houston Rockets are starting to know it. Tom Martin over at Houston’s SBNation (a dude who seems to have a strange infatuation with Saved By The Bell) is officially on Patrick Patterson watch. Patrick is adjusting to life in Texas and both writing articles and tweeting about his new experiences and Martin is a fan. Check out his two latest entries where he uses Patrick’s observations to try and entice NBA free agents to Houston here and here.

Everybody have a fun, safe 4th of July (observed).
