Unfortunately, I was not able to catch the game last night due to a function for work, which is the fourth time this season (VMI, UNC and Miami were the others – coincidence?) that the real world has compromised my ability to be a fake internet journalist. But, upon my return home, I found that not only did my beloved Cats lose, but Coach Gillispie also made himself look like a Grade-A jerk at halftime.
So, in case you missed it, here it is:
Now, after watching this, I have two reactions:
1. Are you serious? This is what was so offensive and made so many people mad? I think Gillispie gave a great answer to the question. This is Kentucky and it is about more than one player or the number name on the back of the jersey (I’ll get to you later, Ramon Harris) – even if that player is ballin’ out of control. And, utltimately, it’s about winning the game, which they were doing at that point. It probably wasn’t a bad question like he said it was, but he certainly wasn’t rude to the reporter.
2. Has anyone mastered the “On the inside I want to murder you but on the outside I’m happy to be here” smile more than Billy Gillispie? I think the closest recorded instance occurs at about the :45 second mark here, but Gillispie has it down to an art. I can’t think of a single thing that you could say to him while a camera is rolling that would get him to wipe that grin off his face. I’m not exactly sure why, but I respect that.
