Impact of the decisions

Shabazz Muhammad and Nerlens Noel have made their decisions known, and it’s a mixed bag.
Muhammad, believed by most in the days leading up to the decision, was leaning to UCLA and he affirmed that decision last night, picking the Bruins over Kentucky. This is the first major target that Calipari has gone all-in on and whiffed — at least at Kentucky. This doesn’t damage his reputation as a recruiter at all, but it does sting a little. We aren’t used to rejection.
What does this say about Muhammad? Who knows really? Maybe he didn’t want to be the guy. Maybe he was intimidated by Caliapari and Big Blue Nation. Maybe he realized he is one-and-one with or without Coach Cal. No matter what, if a player isn’t going to buy into Calipari, his system, and the team… It was never meant to be.
I’m not going to sit here and rip Muhammad just because he picked the wrong school. But let’s be real. He wants the Los Angeles limelight. Ben Howland has minimal control over his program; we’ve seen examples of that in the past. Shabazz Muhammad can come into that Bruins system and drop 30 every night. That’s what he wants, and that’s what he’ll get. Maybe we can watch him at 3 o’clock in the morning over here on the east coast.
Calipari says it best about Kentucky, “This program isn’t for everyone… You’ve got to go all in.”
Back in Lexington: The night would improve considerably, as the No. 1 player in the nation, Nerlens Noel picked the Cats over the Georgetown Hoyas. It was a much-anticipated buildup, and up until the moments of his decision no one knew the chosen school.
Noel punked just about everyone watching, as the only flatbill cap on the table was that of Georgetown. But the chair spun around and it was UK carved into the back of his flat top. Calipari has landed the top-ranked recruiting class for another year. Get your poster board and blank t-shirts stockpiled, because the flat top feller is a Cat.
Looking forward, Calipari obviously seemed content with his guard situation — Ryan Harrow and Archie Goodwin will be the stars, assuming both Marquis Teague and Doron Lamb leave for the NBA draft. Cal focused all his resources on big men, and it’s time to pick up one or two more guys and move on.
So where does Kentucky go from here? The 3-position is going to be hard to fill and is wide open right now. It seems Calipari leaned heavily on the fact he would land Muhammad and lock up the wing spot, but now that he is off the board we may see Alex Poythress slide out.
Then hope for 6-7, 230 pound Anthony Bennett to come in to play power forward. Alex Oriakhi, the UConn transfer, is still looking for a home as well. Kentucky is high on his list, but with the Noel commitment he may not want to come into a program already loaded with talent down low. But the Noel-Oriakhi ties are close, both played for the same AAU team, and have surely spoken about the possibility of playing together.
The only player really left out of the mix right now is Kyle Wiltjer getting a starting spot. That isn’t a bad thing, but his defense needs a ton of work for that to pay off at both ends of the floor. Wiltjer will again get considerable minutes, but I have to imagine Calipari will plan to groom him for another year.
Two major players in the 2012 recruiting race are out of the running, and Kentucky now has to piece together the last of its class. Nerlens Noel already had legendary status with the flat top, but that stunt he pulled tonight will never be forgotten, and Big Blue Nation has fallen completely in love.
102 Comments for Impact of the decisions
Nerlens definitely had a good start with BBN with that stunt. I’d rather have him than Shabazz because of the hole at the Center position. His defense will fill the hole Davis left. Nerlens also brings confidence and the intangible known as SWAG. I’m already wooed.
UK is gonna regret not having Bazz on the team next yyear….UCLA champs 2013! eat it….
“Flat top feller” was cute the first couple of times, but you all have beaten that right into the ground. Please, give it a rest. We all know his name now, or should. He is the number one recruit in the nation, a member of the number one recruiting class and will play for the number one and reigning national championship team. He should be a great replacement for “that unibrow dude”.
3)im guessing your not much of a fan of UK
“This is the first major target that Calipari has gone all-in on and whiffed.” Really? What about Josh Selby? You can’t please everyone, it happens.
# 2. Whatever dude !
We are Sons of Westwood,
And we hail the Blue and Gold;
True to thee our hearts will be,
Our love will not grow old.
Bruins roam the hills of Westwood,
By the blue Pacific shore;
And when they chance to see a man from USC,
Ev’ry Bruin starts to roar.

UCLA can have Shabazz Muhammad. He can take them to the Sweet 16 and then leave for the NBA. I hope he enjoys playing in front of 10,000 fans a night with 3 ESPN games.
Noel on the otherhand will play in front of 23,500 during “Big Blue Madness” along with 12-15 ESPN games. UK may not win the National Title but they will still be way ahead of UCLA.
Muhammad had a chance to be unselfish and play for a team instead of hiself. Players who came to UK and do well are treated like legends. Just ask Davis and Miller. UCLA fans care more about smoking weed, hippie folk rock and wish gay bar has the best food.
NOT.A.FLAT.TOP.
If UCLA wins a title, they’ll be the first to do it with one player, and they’ll have the Cats in the final game. Good luck with that. Go Cats, and welcome Noel!
#5 Xavier Henry as well, O and Will Barton too. But Whatever. I really hope we continue to Pursue Amille Jefferson, I was very impressed with him at the mcdonalds game and i didnt get to watch the derby classic but he was the mvp so thats that. He looks like a big time scorer with an allusive game being that hes 6’8 and 200 lbs. Him and Bennet would be awesome to have. I saw on Twitter yesterday that Bennet is closing in on his decision and its down to us and Florida. I think the allure of UK will win out though with this recruiting class coming in and we’ll end up with Bennet. As for Oriakhi Im going to count him out now that Nerlens is here. Missouri looks like the best place for him to go seeing as he’ll walk in and be a starter from day one. I would still take him in a heart beat though if he wanted to be a cat.
I want to play at UCLA because they’ve sucked so bad the past two years… any questions?
Josiah Turner, the No. 2 point guard in 2011 (behind Marquis Teague) is transferring out of Arizona. Should coach Cal go get him to come play for 2013???
Nerlens had actually affected his flat top with the UK trim, then it would be meaningful. Instead, the “UK” will be gone in a day or two.
Don’t look at that door waiting on Anthony Davis to walk back through folks!
Bazz wants to shoot 25 times a game and he’s knows that’s not gonna happen at UK. I think he is to selfish to play at UK with a mentality like that. He also might be afraid of how hard Cal will make him work and the pressure associated with playing at UK. It’s not for everybody!
UCLA is gonna have more than one player….everybody keeps forgetting about our #3 recruiting class….kyle anderson????? jordan adams??? im pretty sure ESPN is gonna make sure our squad makes it on primetime televison at least 10 times…
Shabazz didn’t even crack a smile when he said he was going to UCLA. says it all.
#7- That’s slicker than a Sam Gilbert $100 handshake. Go find some drugs at a team party and chill.
@ 16
UCLA will be lucky to make the Sweet 16. End of debate, thanks for playing.
I believe labeling Wiltjer as the odd man out is a bit premature. I agree that he would get quality minutes off the bench next year with the talent and experience he now possesses only if the season were to start tomorrow and our starting roster consisted of PF Oriakhi, SF Poythress, SG Goodwin, C Noel, PG Harrow. Wiltjer could get minutes at the 3-5 spots and end up averaging 22 to 25 minutes a game. With that sort of playing time, he could reasonably be expected to contribute around 12 pg, 5.5 rpg, 1.5 ast and a block per game. But factor in an intense offseason of conditioning at UK, which should immensely help his contributions on the defensive side of the ball as well as finishing strong on the other end; plus the games of pick-up he’ll be playing with all the NBA players that visit and ball over the course of the summer break, and I suspect we’ll see an All SEC type of player emerge. Does that necessarily mean he’ll be starting? Of course not. And if he doesn’t, then that will be a testament to how good the newcomers are. In sum, a win-win for everyone. Just the way Cal wants it:)
Shobazz is gon da be da best playa in da country….take dat 2 da baenk
1. Ryan Harrow
2. Archie Goodwin
3. Alex Poythress
4. Oriakhi/Bennett
5. Flat Top
Wiltjer went from being horrible on defense to bad on defense by the end of the season. Unless he improves from bad to AT LEAST mediocre then he’s not going to see the floor much more in his sophomore campaign.
@ 16
UCLA will be lucky to make the Sweet 16. End of debate.
You know Bazz is going to have buyer’s remorse once season begins and they continue to chase UK on weekly basis. He seems like a good kid and it would have been nice to have him on the team but there may not have been enough shots to go around for everyone. Think Bazz probably did it more to appease Dad than himself but it is what it is. Certainly wish him well, and it will be fun following his progression as well and TG we don’t have to go against him in the conference.
Glad 2 of UCLA’s tens of fans made their way to our site to troll. You just got the #2 guy in the class, and you choose the ONLY school that got a better player than yours to troll? Good for you all…have fun going back to being irrelevant after next year while we’re reloading.
And for Hammer, this isn’t the only guy Cal has went “all in” on, and it doesn’t sting one bit. Maybe losing both of them would sting some, but last night felt like a huge victory to me. Though some may disagree, I kinda feel like Cal…like a weight is off my shoulders having won the championship. I feel like next year I might be able to enjoy the games a bit more…without all the nervousness. Noel is the perfect centerpeice for this class.
21) its a high top fade not a flat top…much love to ya tho…go cats!
3,7,16- Come back AFTER you have won. By the way ESPN CAN’T make sure that you are on primetime because the Pac12 already has a tv contract with Fox Sports. So the only thing that ESPN will be able to cover are UCLA’s non conference games and Ben Howland allowing his players to do drugs. So all in all, UCLA will realistically get maybe 2 games on ESPN and/or CBS, while Kentucky gets them all.
Side Note: It always makes your argument better when you have facts to back it up. As opposed to your blind opninion about what you HOPE will happen next year. NEWS FLASH….KENTUCKY WON THE TITLE AND ALSO HAS THE TOP RECRUITING CLASS FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR…..Have fun with your wet dreams about hopeful titles. In the meantime, we will talk about the one that we JUST won. Bill Walton, Lew Alcindor, and Kevin Love aren’t walking through that door.
17: your right I noticed that also. He was ho-hum with his malcomb x glasses on and did not look that excited where our guy was 100% full on with the UK haircut. Would have liked to have bazz, but I am happier with who we got for sure. He is going fit right in.
PLEASE GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH SARGEANT CARTER TO SEE A FLAT TOP. Google Kid n Play or Nerlens Noel to see a HIGH-TOP FADE. and please please stop the flat top feller crap.
i hope Shabazz does bring UCLA back. it would be nice to play them in the tournament!
16.) You do have talent, but you do not have a coach. To win on one and done talent you have to meld a team of selfless players, key word team. Howland doesnt do that, apparently the kids only see him at practice (only a few hours a week). So while your boys are out doing coke, our guys will be getting hopped up on Mrs. Calipari’s cupcakes.
Also Howlands offense does not favor elite talents game. Enjoy 50 point games with Shabazz accounting for half of them. Im sure Josh Smith will be loving that.
I know that you went to three straight final fours, but what has happened in since now that Howland’s techniques have set in.
Also UCLA will not be on primetime 10 times you yokel. That would mean you have to play at 4 and 6 in the afternoon. No one in LA will go. No one will watch a crappy PAC 12 team play a good UCLA team. Keep dremaing or just follow the Lakers
ESPN already set UCLA up with 6 primtime spots….not worried about it
We are Sons of Westwood,
Weed, X and bullies thrive;
In fairweather glee our hearts will be,
When Shabazz’s stock takes a dive.
Ben Howland roams the hills of Westwood,
And frankly he looks scared;
Cause when Shabazz and Co. fail,
His job will not be spared.

John Wooden’s not coming thru that door today, we suck… Hey, Hey WE SUCK! BRUINS!
At the very worst, Wiltjer gets a similar role to what he had this year. I think he will have confidence right out of the gate in 12-13 and will surprise many. Regardless, let’s not forget he and Harrow were 5 star recruits. As of now, we have five 5 star recruits locked up for next season (Harrow, Wiltjer, Poythress, Goodwin, Noel). The talent is ALREADY there for #9 and we may not be done.
32) who cares? get back to your own bruin blog! What? you can’t because there isn’t a Bruin site as fantastic and engaging as our site?? surprise, surprise…
32-You are wrong. UCLA already has a contractual obligation with Fox Sports. ESPN would have to buy out that contract, assuming that Fox Sports would even be willing to give it up. You are a moron.
37) nuh uh your stoopid
31) thanks for that one comma there, that really helped me decipher that mess.
32) HAHA you’re an idiot. Your schedule hasn’t even been set yet.
@ 3,7,16 Nerlens said he was hoping to bring #9 to Big Blue Nation. Shabazz said he was hoping to sell out Pauley! A home game! You guys are riDICulous talking smack when you have to get one of the highest rated players in recent draft history just to sell out a home game or two! I mean, damn. Yes, you have 11 titles….10 of them from the most ridiculous once in history run ever…then a 20 year drought before lucking into a nice situation with the O’Bannons…and now 17 years without again! And that is the ONLY record you hold that we don’t, and we are coming for that one! Getting ready to knock on the door! GO BIG BLUE!
I hope Bazz does “GET HIZZ ” , meanwhile our “TEAM ” will get
” IT ” ( NCAA Title ) Oh, anf fear the ” ERASOR “
No more use of ” flat top feller” on this site. Annoying.
If Wiltjer can get some speed and defensive skills, then he plays the 2 spot in Calipari’s 4-forward offense. He can fill in on Miller’s habit of playing the 2 guard like a fiddle in the paint, or hit threes if they sag off him.
Wiltjer just needs to pull a Jorts off-season, and he can surprise a LOT of people.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1142522-ucla-basketball-why-shabazz-muhammad-can-be-the-pac-12s-best-sf-in-2012-13
Can we please stop. Can’t wait to win #9.
No more use of ” flat top feller” on this site. Annoying.
Some of you criticizing the “flat top feller”…I’m sure some of you know where that comes from. But every time I hear that I think of Turley Curd and laugh. Hasn’t gotten old for me yet.
so the moderator deleted my message but allow this UCLA troll to go on and on about the Bruins? what the hell?
43- No one is denying Shabazz is good. What we are saying is that UCLA can’t be relevant as long as they are in the PAC-12. How did O.J. Mayo do when he went to USC? And USC had a better team then you all will have this year. By the way, having the best SF in the PAC-12 is like being the smartest kid in special ed.
Welcome Trolls of Westwood……We are Kentucky and its not been very long ago we were not very good either……we are Baaaaaaccccckkkkk! Hope you have a great turnaround and hope to see you in Big Dance next year……Bazz would learn alot from that game I suspect
you ky fans are so full of yourselves
BAZ) You keep making yourself look dumber. Shabazz can “be the Pac-10’s most dominant SF”…Hahahaha, OF COURSE he will. The Pac-10 has no one. Not really a bold prediction, not really something to be proud of.
46- It was probably your use of the word “sh*t” that did it.
(uoflfan) yes we are! why are you here if we are not so fantastic that you can’t help but want to come here try to make us feel bad so you can feel a bit better about your team and yourself?!!! haha
At least we’re not on your blogs right now.
39) even calipari said thats his goal. Undefeated season and chasing UCLA. Will be a fun ride.. GO BIG BLUE
UCLA fans coming to troll KSR says a lot about the state of UCLA’s basketball program…
I think Calipari wants us to surpass UCLA…not to chase them…hahaha
55) yeah and we will..
UCLA is hoping to sell out a game at home and maybe get on TV for once. UK is hoping to repeat and win another Championship. hahaha UK Goals > UCLA Goals
#5) Cal did not go “all-in” on Josh Selby, if my memory serves me right, Cal completely stopped recruiting him due to all the baggage that came with him…
And as far as Shabazz not coming here, it sucks, I really wanted him, but maybe UK wasn’t for him. He’s the type of guy that wants to shoot 20 shots a night, and have the offense run through him every possession, that wasn’t gonna happen at UK. To me, that ultimately is why he chose UCLA, Howland has no choice but to make him “THE MAN” Shabazz is most likely the best playery in the Pac-12 already. Either way, good luck at UCLA Shabazz…
the difference is that Shabazz and Kyle will be gone after next year, and UCLA will fall back to irrelevancy…
Anthony Bennett #PlayingTimeUK will he get it? too many bigs?
Maybee Shabazz worried the NCAA would bring a Kanter type focus to him if he choose UK but would be given a pass by choosing UCLA like all other UCLA violations
60) with the winning season were about to have it will make UCLA look alot more appealing than in the past to new recruits…..Bruins!
UCLA may be able to win themselves and NIT Championship this year with the addition of Bazz!
@ 63
22-12, Sweet 16 if lucky. You must be excited.
C Noel 32 min
C Cauley 8 min
F Bennett 32 min
F Wiltjer 18 min
F A.Jefferson 13 min
F/G Poythress 30 min
G Harrow 30 min Goodwin 25 min
Hood & Co 12 min
Plenty of PT for Bennett!!!
35-5 Champs!
So the UCLA “fans” are dusting off their car flags in storage. How adorable.
You aren’t going from the NIT to the championship in one year, at least, not without a complete roster and coaching overhaul like Cal’s first year here. Oh wait, was UCLA in the NIT? Maybe that should be Shabazz’s #2 goal, behind selling out a home game.
if we must engage in this dumb UCLA conversation, I would put UCLA in top 10 contention if they can land Tony Parker or Tony Bennett….but I don’t think they are recruiting Bennett.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/7801992/indiana-hoosiers-lead-revised-top-25-plenty-changes-elsewhere
ESPN has UCLA at No. 13 right now.
Since neither the Clippers nor the Lakers will be getting the top picks next year, no one in L.A. gives a damn about Bazz other than Howland and his Bruins teammates.
I am sure Howland used the “help me defned the most titles” line. UCLA has the most titles thanks to John Wooden in the 60s. By the way, a man that started his coaching career int he state of Kentucky. Go figure.
Attention UCLA trolls – From what I hear, Shabazz is not even cleared to play yet.
don’t worry UCLA trolls, I am sure NCAA will just clear Shabazz to play just to help the PAC10 (and NCAA itself) get more TV money!
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1144&dat=19820201&id=s0scAAAAIBAJ&sjid=xV0EAAAAIBAJ&pg=1944,90690
remember this guy ucla? the one who provided illegal benefits to ucla back when they were winning championships? ucla should have less titles than duke and carolina but they were fortunate the ncaa wasnt as strict back then as they are now
Hey 43)who likes to be called “BAZ>NOEL” which is not true according to most rankings…but I digress…. Dude- I would be a friggin world beater in PAC 12 – your own link says best SMALL FORWARD not PLAYER and – quoting here- “COMPETITION IS SLIM”…..not exactly placing the UCLA BRUINS IN UK TERRITORY…..We are glad you are proud of getting Baz….he seems to be a good kid that just knew he would have to be a team player @ UK…best of luck……BUT UCLA IS NOT GOING TO BE A CONTENDER FOR THE NC……Just can’t see them….Howland forgot how to develop players and a team…IF JOSH SMITH gets his head outta his a** they may be elite 8 but…welll he is as fat and lazy as i am…..and….thet is BAD
my guess is that the “UCLA” trolls are actually Loserville trolls who have nothing left to argue about since we beat them twice this year and brought home the trophy. So they put on their UCLA disguise and try to talk smack. It’s pathetic, but what else would you expect from those losers?
@WWMKGD Genius! why didn’t I think of that!!!
@Paratrooper. No bueno!
If we can’t say “flat top feller”, can we do this? [[[:-)
I am a die hard fan but you guys crazy. Going off on a kid bc he chose Ucla over Ky. We need to focus on getting some depth because this team we just had is once in a life time. Ky will lose 7 to 8 games next yr and will be ranked 15/20 all yt long if some pieces not line up and some guys need to step it up
#76 I think you’re right. Hey Loserville trolls- What’s with your football coach having a hissy fit because the CJ covered the Final 4 instead of a SPRING?? football practice? Everybody is dumb at that school.
If people think “My way or the highway” Ben Howland is going to let Baz take 30 shots a game they are wrong. Howland is so rigid that he players every year and not to the NBA. I doubt he’ll let any of his players take more than 10 a game. Yeah Baz and Anderson will really thrive in a half court offense dominated system – sarcasm. Baz is good enough to get drafted in the top 5 tomorrow probably but he’s not going to have fun unless it’s off the court next year.
Middle Tennessee beat UCLA by 20 last year at UCLA Baz better get in the gym today
He’s there because his dad needed to come through for Adidas and Howland. Congrats dad.
When does Bennett and Oriakhi make their decisions???
Is Jon Hood a non-factor? A 6’7″ player with all the tools.
Watching Shabazz last night, he looked depressed. I wonder if he’s going to pull a Terrance Jones and call Cal about his “mistake.” Either way, the ‘cats look solid.
#7 – You and the other two fans who will attend UCLA games must look forward to losing to Cal State Northridge, Fullerton etc, etc. The Baz wold not be the man at UK. He wants to be the man – so he chose UCLA. The other four starting players on the team better enjoy the practices – they wont see the ball in games much. Good luck with the dissension.
Hammer is totally clueless. First major target at UK Cal has missed? LOL. I LOVE Cal and his recruiting is ridiculous, but the amount of incorrect and/or uninformed statements in your posts continue to amaze me. Xavier Henry and Tobias Harris pop straight to my mind of high priority guys Cal wanted. Not to mention guys like Drummond and Coleman…wowsers.
5. I obviously agree with your point, but we didn’t miss on Selby. We got exactly who we wanted at the 1 and 2 that year. Knight and Lamb.
85. He doesn’t seem too depressed…check his twitter feed
The haircut is called a BOX not a flat top. This flat top feller thing is stupid as hell. Not gonna catch on!
Did Jon Hood transfer and I missed it?
It’s not a box or a flat top…it’s a friggin high top fade! He’s gonna decommit just because we can’t get his hair style right haha….obviously it’s important to him
80) I havent seen anybody run the kid down. Just sayin he made a bad decision. He is a selfish player on the court. Does that mean hes a bad person off it? No.
Bazz picked UCLA because of Addidas. His Dad works for Addidas and his little sister is a pro player and WTA Tour with an Addidas contract. It was obvious he wasnt going against that.
Bazz made a decision based on his families wishes I think. It all sounds good at the time but when he’s wishing he had a legitimate shot at a championship later next year, he’s going to wonder what was he thinking? Going to UCLA only helps UCLA . There’s no telling what may happen to that program next season with all the craziness going on there. Maybe I’m ignorant but I have no idea what Ben Howland has ever done. Of he was going to pass on UK , don’t stone me for this one, at least Duke would have been a way better choice than UCLA. At least Coach K already has a spot reserved for him in the hall of fame, unofficially. No I’m not a Duke troller, but Coach K is one of the top five coaches coaching today.
@16…unfortunately UCLA may spend more time on ” to catch a predator”, ” cops”, and ” intervention” than on espn. Ben Howland will be working his second job at Wringling Brothers part of the season as well. Bazz seems like too good a kid to go to that program. And @ 21….after we take that sentence to thesaurus .com and have it translated maybe we can respond to it.
I dont care if its incorrect. Flat top feller has a nice ring to it. I like it and Im gonna use it.
I didn’t think Bazz looked overly pleased with his announcement. That’s why I think he was trying to please his family. He’s going to the nba no matter where he goes but he should have at least picked a school where he might enjoy his college years instead of regretting them. Assuming there is more than one. There will have to be to win a championship. And strange enough, I don’t go to UCLA boards and make comments. Or any other school. Funny how all the other fans come to ours and run their mouths. They must not have anything good to post on their own boards so they come to ours and post nonsense.
#5, #11 – Good mentions, and let’s not forget Harrison Barnes, Releford, Kyrie Irving, Quincy Miller, Tobias Harris, CJ Leslie, and probably a few more. Cal recruited all of those players very aggressively and didn’t get any. Does that matter? No, because he still recruited dominant classes anyway. Every recruiter, including Cal, is going to miss on a few. But misses are irrelevant; makes are what matter.
Don’t like “Flat-top feller” – show some respect.
Hammer turns in another clunker. It’s like he honed his writing chops in an AOL chat room. Spell check FTW Caliapari. Hey KSR, drop the hammer.
For the love of God stop calling him the “Flat Top
Feller” it sounds so damn backwards and ignorant!
Whoever came up with that should be slapped now!
Who is going to be our backup point guard and 2 guard? We need some quality depth at the guard spots!!! It’d be nice to have Lamb and Teague back for next year.
