Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

If not UK, where would you want Andrew Wiggins?

Kat and Wiggy

With his decision seemingly coming in the next few days (see: recent Twitter explosion), the entire college basketball world is abuzz with the last, and best, high school recruit left to make his decision.  We’ve belabored his choices for months, as UNC, Kansas, and Florida State have all been listed next to Kentucky as possible destinations.  Of course, Kentucky would be our first choice here at KSR, and probably yours as well if you’re reading this.  Hopefully it’s Andrew’s first choice too, but if not, where would you want to see him land?

At either North Carolina or Kansas, Wiggins would transform an already-Top 25 team into a serious threat to UK at the number one spot.  Particularly at UNC, where top-ten talent is already present.  Neither team would be likely to overtake Kentucky in the preseason, though.  But both schools have championship-caliber coaches who have had plenty of success in the last five or seven years, which is the time period that Wiggins was paying most attention to college basketball.  If Wiggins eschews Kentucky, and instead opts for one of the other two bluebloods, there’s a very real possibility that we’ll find ourselves having to root against Andrew (from just a competitive standpoint) in the NCAA Tournament.  That doesn’t sound like much fun, as Andrew seems like a likeable kid with not much to root against.

Meanwhile, Florida State doesn’t seem to pose the same quandary to Kentucky fans.  If UK, UNC, and Kansas are all elite teams simply maintaining their routine dominance, FSU is looking to start some tradition.  Meaning, in large part, they haven’t been extremely competitive in the ACC.  Of all the tweets I’ve seen, I think Dan Wolken said it best:

That’s a light-hearted way to look at it, but it might be accurate.  Roy Williams and Bill Self, you imagine, would know what to do with a talented freshman.  Calipari has proved that, if anyone can mold young talent into a competitive team player, it’s him.  But Hamilton?  That same pedigree isn’t there, and Dan rightly points out that it’ll be interesting to see how he would handle a player like Wiggins.

Bottom line, there’s a lot to look forward to in the early part of this week.  And there’s no question that there’s room for Andrew in the Kentucky lineup.  He’d be an instant fan favorite in Lexington, and would take the already-top ranked team to unbelievable new heights.  However, I suppose if he had to pick another school, it’s probably best if it’s Florida State.  We’ll see on Tuesday.  Maybe.  Get the champagne ready regardless; either pop it in celebration, or use the bottle to knock yourself unconscious in sadness.

I don’t even see how this is a question. It’s FSU because then he can’t hurt us. The rest of the team will be bad enough to where they won’t be able to compete with the elite teams.

If he really wants to learn to play “Team concept” where minutes are not as important as wins, he goes to the cats. If playing time is more important and there is nothing wrong with that, he doesn’t go to Lexington. Playing for Calipari isn’t for all the top high school basketball players. If you are really great at something, it can be very hard to be humble.

I hope he goes to FS. My loyalty is with the players we have and they are plenty good enough to play and that’s who I want getting minutes for us. I’m so over Wiggins it’s turned into dislike at this point. I’m perfectly fine with Randle/Wiltjer/Lee/Young/Poythress/Willis at our forward position. We don’t need him and I don’t even want him. I’ll be so glad when this annoying hype is over.

Without a doubt- FSU. First, he could pose an obstacle to #9 at KU or UNC- at FSU we won’t hear of him again. Also, Hamilton is an ex-UK guy and Wiggins might help him beat Duke and North Carolina.

For UK’s benefit, FSU. For me, I would love to see him in Pikeville, KY. Might even get the chance to see a game, but the ticket price might be a bit high.

Andrew Wiggins going to FSU would be a little bit like an errant nuclear warhead landing harmlessly in the Pacific Ocean instead of landing on a populated area. No major impact on the College BB landscape, aside from some nightly higlight reel plays. Oh it might rock Duke and UNC’s world a little in league play, but I just don’t see one good player making that much of an impact at a football school.

FSU becomes a thorn in the side of UNC and Duke, but other than the slim chance of meeting them in the tourny, it has almost no effect on us.

I want Andrew Wiggins to go to Kentucky, period! I don’t have a second place choice. I want him to be a Wildcat next season. 29. Don’t worry about Otis. I think some Louisville fans just live in a fantrasy world. Even winning another NCAA championship didn’t bring them out of it.

If we don’t get him, I would hope he goes to Fla. St. Odds are we will not face them. Getting a little tired of the “Wiggins” roadshow. Beginning to think we would be better, chemistry wise, without him.
