Well…that game didnt exactly go as planned… Hope we can turn it around for Flordia and Missouri. I wasreally hoping the mock selection committee would be wrong about UK, since Lunardi had us it, but it looks like they were right and now we need to play our way back in.

If you compare the TALENT (not the hustle, desire, execution or basketball IQ…..just the TALENT) on Kentucky’s team…… to the George Mason and Butler Final 4 teams of recent years, you would have to say that Kentucky could still make a run.

Will we make a run, maybe not, probably not. But, Kentucky does have the TALENT to make a run.

It all comes down to team chemistry and how well we match up against our opponent in the tournament.

The Cats need to become much more proficient on offense to stay in games. Their defense is what it is without Noel. These boys just need to learn to put the ball in the hole!! If UK does not score at least 70, they will not win. Their defense is swiss cheese without Noel.

The thing is Noel and Cauley do not have a back-to-the-basket game. They dont have a drop step, or an up an under….they have a jump hook but that is it…. They dont understand how to “feel the defender”…. go watch Dakari Johnson play on the post. He uses his body to feel where the defender is and has a plethora of moves he can use…. I love Dakari… very Greg Monroe-esque

Matt, I’m generally an eternal optimist. Even a couple of weeks ago I was holding out hope that we could click and make this run. I went into that Florida game expecting it to be close and hoping we could pull it out. But let’s stop even pretending like we’re going to turn this around and make the tournament. This season was over the minute Noel went out. The rest of this team just doesn’t have it – not enough heart, not enough fight. We might win a few more games but we’re NIT bound.

  80. James K
    10:28 am February 18, 2013 Permalink

This is sort of a sad situation for our freshmen, in my opinion, because the train that Cal has created is moving so fast that some unexpected delays in development could penalize the guys that need more time. I think Archie is going to be a FANTASTIC college player, with like three years of development, but I honestly don’t think he has the time. If Gordon or Randle come in, I really think they play over Alex. Harrow — same thing. But what do you do? You can’t stop recruiting the best, and you can’t delay the speed of which the program is travelling right now. You may be in the tough situation of forcing some unhappy riders to get off, and I wish it didn’t have to be that way.

To be fair, isn’t Willie Cauley Stein exactly what we tabbed him and expected him to be? He is raw. A raw player relies on his training (i.e. “Catch ball, post move #4”).

I think we are guilty of holding this team to a ridiculous standard. Struggling kids rarely need criticism more than they need unconditional support and patience.

Sounds good to me J in O, Maybe if they aren’t hitting, they could get some 3’s from Polson? The point being, the Cats are going to have to score in the upper 70’s to have a chance to win. Defense is just non-existant with this group. I mean really, how do you expect a diva-type player to buy in on defense, when they can’t even buy in on their favorite part of the game on offense. If Cal gets this turned around and at least makes these guys competitive, it will be his best coaching job thus far, IMO.

For good reason, I’ve seemingly dismissed everything BCG said about life and basketball. However, he was dead-on with his emphasis on mental makeup, mental toughness.

Talent abounds with this team, but they are an emotional whirlwind. Low self-confidence (Harrow), fear of failure (Poythress) and distrust in others (Archie) can keep a team (and individuals) from scratching the surface of their potential.

Remember when Tubby had a top 10 team based on talent, but had to bring in a sports psychologist? SAME SITUATION.

  128. Winston
    11:02 am February 18, 2013 Permalink

The 2011 team didn’t really figure it out until 2 or 3 games left in the regular season, but the light ain’t going on with this group. Harrow is a train wreck, Goodwin is determined to do everything wrong, Poythress is the biggest miss since Richard Madison, Wiltjer is a good complimentary player and not built to be the leader and I’m done with WCS after his priority post game Saturday was to whip out his iPhone and check in on twitter. Cal’s snap reaction was right. This bunch is uncoachable and seems to think “Kentucky” on the uniform is their entitlement rather than something they should live up to.

  129. Bulldawg

In defense of Cal, I don’t see any other coach in the country that could get this GROUP to buy in… IF and I mean IF anyone can get these guys to look straight, it is John Calipari. If they fall from grace this year, BBN should show our undying support because next year will be fun again. How about that Stoops guy? Can’t wait for the Spring game. It will be nice to see more fans in the stands this year. However, I prolly won’t be able to sit right up front on the 50 yrd line this year. 🙁

Goodwin needs a jump shot….no, wait, he needs to take some jump shots so that defenses at least honor him on the perimeter. I realize driving the ball to the rim is what he’s “good” at but he’ll charge 7 out of every 10 drives if he doesn’t shoot from the outside from time to time to open more opportunities at the rim.

  133. blueneck
    11:12 am February 18, 2013 Permalink

When criticizing how Cal “constructed the team” remember some common sense:
Cal doesn’t get every single recruit he wants (Shabazz)
He gets recruits one at a time, he doesn’t select the group of players at one time that he thinks go together (and sometimes he takes a kid who says yes now over a possible no later)
He was still trying to add talent later into summer – didn’t happen obviously

133 – No criticism from me. I think it was a bit unlucky to have the combination of personalities and emotional differences that don’t complement one another. Getting talent to mesh is a hard job as is, but add to it very sensitive kids with deferring personalities and insecurities, and you have a bad combination.

However, Cal does construct a group of players to recruit ahead of time (he even says so) and gets 90% of them. Even if he did add a Shabazz, he still has to mesh the personalities and emotions of Harrow, Poythress, Goodwin and Cauley-Stein. It’d still be an issue, in my opinion.

I’m also tired of hearing “there’s plenty of time…” NO! TIME HAS RUN OUT, TIME TO PLAY!!!

I know that the seeding isn’t based on an S curve, but it certainly should be. The system as it is now is utterly unfair. It completely punishes the best teams each year and rewards the western schools because, geographically speaking, this region is the weakest. As the system is now, it’s better to be the worst 1 seed and get shipped out West because the competition there is inferior. Case in point, a very average UCLA team made the Final Four 3 straight years in the 2000’s =by coming from the West region.

Matt, was this mock selection of real committee members or media members? Just wondering…..

  232. Nerlens possibly coming back??? The fan part of me is saying “Yes!”, but the logical part of me is saying “Impossible!”.

UK might get in for one reason. The NCAA would love to embarrass us by sticking us in the Dayton play in game.

All we have to do is win at least four out of the next six games and make it to the SEC tourney championship game and we should be in the NCAA.

I honestly am not sure how good we should have been. I think Poythress was incredibly overrated. Epically overrated. He cannot dribble the basketball and only seems to have a three point shot. There was all this talk about his physical attributes, but honestly when I look at him I do not even see that. He looks like a two guard who literally cannot handle the basketball. It looks as though the Duke game was the exception. This team felt off from the beginning even with Noel. I am thinking there is a cancer on this team and possibly 2 or 3.
