I bet you can’t watch Aaron Gordon’s mixtape just once

There are high school basketball mixtapes and then there is Aaron Gordon’s high school basketball mixtape. It’s nothing short of amazing, and that’s coming from a guy who thinks all of these YouTube videos are pretty much the same. If you’re one of those people who normally skips over these posts, I encourage you to take four minutes to watch Gordon in action. The Blake Griffin comparisons are spot on.

Gordon is set to announce on April 3 and Kentucky is still in contention for his services. He was blown away by his official visit to Lexington and the staff is still on him, even after landing Randle, but most expect him to stay out west.  We can still dream, though.

Get ready to pick your jaw off the floor…

Stopped watching a minute into vid. He can dunk and handle the ball while no one is guarding him? Just like all mix vids. Short range and mid range jumper while be guarded is what I’d like to see. Drew go back and look at those vids done on UK players last year while in HS or AA ball. Impressed now with their game…I think not.

Would take this kid over hawkins every day of the week and twice on sunday. Great shot blocker. Great rebounder.. And great finisher. Gordon plays above the rim, while hawkins would be riding the bench.

Would like have both him and Wiggins along with the ones we already have signed; 3 or 4 at least have to be hot in each game.

I can see tremendous talent and skill with this kid. You know what you’re talking about, Drew. You can tell he has awesome coordination, a strong handle, and tremendous athleticism. #9 — True, you can’t tell how great of a shooter he is, but you can tell he is a superstar and there is no denying that. No videos on Goodwin or Poythress revealed a level of talent anywhere near what this kid has.

I’m telling you, if Coach Cal gets this kid or Wiggins there is no way this team doesn’t go 40-0 next year. How would a team have a chance at beating them?

    12:37 pm March 26, 2013 Permalink

#14 – I’d like to agree, but at the beginning of this past season, I would have said there’s no way this team DOESN’T make it to the NCAA tournament. You just never know. It has been approximately 30-35 yrs since the last undefeated team. Even UK’s 96 team (with 9 future NBA players)lost a couple of games. As much as a perfect season seems like a real possibility, the odds are highly likely that it won’t happen. Don’t get me wrong, next year should be phenomemal, but it seems there’s always one game where Billy Shoots-a-lot hits 9 threes and goes 14-14 from the free throw line to pick up an improbably victory against the Cats.

I am especially impressed with his ability to slow down the speed of time when he is in the air. Seriously, though, this kid might be the most athletic in his class. That’s about all you can see in the tape-he’s a high flyer and quick for a guy his size. That’s true of about every mixtape.

  16. Delk for 3
    12:45 pm March 26, 2013 Permalink

16 — No way you can say “every mixtape” shows a player with the ability of this kid. I agree that most mixtapes show a high flyer and a guy with speed, but what is extremely unique with Aaron is his high level of coordination. 99 percent of mixtapes reveal a player who doesn’t have near the same level of coordination.

#17-I meant the emphasis on dunking is true of about every mix tape, in response to an earlier post. Omitted words misplaced context. Clearly, though there is a difference between average dunking and Gordon’s, shall we say, flying.

I am partially on board with some posts here. Yes, he is playing against inferior talent, but lets be honest, when playing against any defense, its hard to just do what you want. Ever play against someone that just sucks? They foul a lot! Hard to make moves when idiots are hangin from your arms. Anyway, this kid has a lot of skill, and I for one would not mind if it was Gordon or Wiggins. Both would be best, but, either helps us.

This looks flashy because of the competition he’s playing against. If he doesn’t learn to protect the ball in the lane better he will get stripped a LOT. D1 Defenders are not going to play him with five feet of cushion like these high school kids do. Gotta tuck that ball and cut out all the windmill/hatchet-style BS. Also, what is his FT percentage? Honestly after this season, if our new guys don’t shoot 70% plus from the stripe, you can keep ’em. Cal has proved that neither he nor any of the assistants know how to instruct these kids on proper FT shooting – so they better have it coming in.

Appears to be super athletic with the ability to create his shot…at least going to the rim. Shot blocking and great hops to boot.
With his propensity for dunking, the comparisons to Griffin are quite apt.

Yes, anyone looks good against this type of competition, but some of his moves are ankle breakers no matter who you play. I bet he ends up being a star no matter where he plays. But he looks a bit like a showboat, hope that doesn’t carry over to an attitude.

Of course he dunks a lot you would too if you were 6’8″ with his athleticism. I watched on ESPN against the twins and lone peak of Utah and he more than held his own. About a 65% ft shooter and can hit the mid range jumper, but by far his athleticism is his best attribute. If he came here the lobs would be silly same with Wiggins both, forget about it.

Gordon is an exceptional passer and sometimes passes the ball to much, instead of taking over and dominating. He is probably the least selfish player in this class. He takes pride in his defense and does not like getting scored on, he can guard just about every position really well. Early this year he played against the Twins when Andrew was hobbled by a hamstring and he had to guard Aaron the whole game. He did an exceptional job of guarding him. Aaron ended up with 28 points, but not because he scored on Gordon, it was because of screens and Gordon’s teammates could not guard him when they had to switch. His jumper is quite up to where it should be, but he is average up to 12-15ft. With all that said he isn’t coming to UK. The staff stopped recruiting him 3 weeks ago when they learnt we were getting Randle. If Randle would have picked KU we would be getting Gordon.

This is random but if Nerlens decides to leave (likely scenario) I’d be really excited to watch him square up with Anthony Davis.

  35. Shawn
    1:30 pm March 26, 2013 Permalink

The only way I would want him Is If we didnt get Wiggins and he plays SF. Seriously, he Is talented but Randle has the better all around game. Randle out rebounds him and Is a more solid presence on the block. It doesnt matter If you can do flashy dunks (Gordon) or just power It home (Randle) Its still two points no matter how you look at It. If he cant play SF he Is no good to us. Willie and Dakari will have C on lock down and Randle will be the starting PF. He could give Randle a breather at PF but I doubt hed be satisifed with those minutes. Like I said, If he cant play SF he will not start. Id feel a lot better If Wiggins came out with his decision first and then see If we would take Gordon. No way I would take Hawkins over Gordon though. And stop talking about getting both Gordon and Wiggins and Hawkins but there simply Is not enough room. We will take Gordon If we get him but we are all In for Andrew Wiggins. Now If he would just make up his mind.

Gordon > Wiggins. 6-8 and can handle the ball like a PG. Can create his own shot off the dribble. Can knock down the outside jumper. Can defend around the basket (as evidenced by the numerous swats and outright SNATHCES around the basket). Has a sick athleticism. And throw in a knack for “showtime.” What else do you want?

  37. Shawn
    1:33 pm March 26, 2013 Permalink

Oh and dont forget Marcus Lee can play either PF or C and will probably get more minutes than Dakari…….HOLY $HIT! WE ARE LOADED NEXT YEAR. Now If only Poythress, Willie, Archie, Harrow, and Wiltjer would make their return official and Wiggins would hurry up and pick UK.

  38. Shawn
    1:35 pm March 26, 2013 Permalink

37 – Gordon’s outside game Is not as impressive as that video would lead you to believe. You should watch entire games of him. Wiggins has a much better outside game and still has the defense, position rebounding, passing, and high flying attributes. Wiggins>Gordon. Gordon Is going to Arizona anyways.

@39 agree with you on Gordon’s shot, it is nowhere near as good as Wiggins’, but passing wise and defensively I would give it to Gordon. The kid takes pride in his defense and he is one of the best passers in this class regardless of position.

That is what I don’t like about these mix-tapes and the hype that surrounds these kids. I have no doubt about his talent or skills, but they are men among boys in these videos. Everything changes in the college arena, everyone you play against is a Mr. Basketball or some all-star from their respective high school. I don’t see much of the flash in these videos carrying over into D1.

If it was up to me, I’d take this kid over Wiggins. Whens the last time you see a 6’8 or 6’9 kid with a NASTY crossover?!?! He emphatically throws down almost every dunk. He’s throwing down doubledip reverse slams IN TRAFFIC??? That’s absurd. We need him worse then Wiggins. We are stocked at the 2 and 3 spots. This kid could just about play anywhere. Wiggins is great, i know that, but with our current class, i think Gordon makes more sense.

  44. Rex

mixtapes are like political soundbytes – they are professionally edited and really slick. AG would look good even on a bad night just as John Wall would, but you never see the dumb play every high schooler makes. I fast forward thru them. Does any sports website publish out-takes of these mixtapes? I would like to see the bloopers.

I’d think after the lackluster performance of several highly ranked prospects this year that people would learn to be more guarded in their evaluations of high school athletes. There isn’t a spit of difference between the videos of Gordon and Wiggins. Both are very large, quick, talented athletes. If either committed to UK we’d be lucky.

I mean, if there’s a player better than what I just witnessed in this video, surely it’s not by much.

I mean this guy has mad handles, sick hops, can see the floor, can pass, and apparently has an outside shot(?). Wow!

  52. Bleed Blue
    4:46 pm March 26, 2013 Permalink

You all are stupid to say take Gordon over Wiggins. There is a reason Wiggins is number 1. Gordon’s offense is dunking. He is a below average shooter. For those saying he has an outside shot have never watched him. He shoots at best maybe 25% from 3 if that. Everybody just give up on getting Gordon. The staff stopped recruiting him 3 weeks ago.
