In Coach Cal’s postgame comments to the press he expressed that this team “needed a competitive spirit, more of a will to win. We’re trying to find it.”. He recounted the series at the end of the game when the Cats trailed by three and Nerlens got a block. The ball was heading right to Alex Poythress but somehow ended up in the hands of a Baylor player. The Baylor player was fouled as he scored and the rest is history. Last year we became spoiled as the team constantly demonstrated Cal’s refuse to lose mentality. This year while the Cats have battled back in their losses but just haven’t found a way to get the W. Transforming from weak to strong is no easy task but it can be done. Here are some tips for this young team to find the will to win:
Read Some Literature
After losing two in a row the Cats need to bounce back. Luckily our coach wrote the book on the subject. The focus now is to push on. Following the game Wiley Cauley-Stein was quoted as saying “We came in here thinking we were that team. And we’re not that team.” No they are not the 2012 National Champions. There is only one team that will be those guys. The journey for this team will be to watch them grow into their own team with their own offense and defensive style. There are going to be bumps along the way but the upside is still there for them to become pretty good.
See a Motivational Speaker
When I heard the words “will to win” there is one player that comes to mind, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. This team could use a pep talk from the warrior himself on what it takes to get the job done. Like in the final Four when UK needed a basket against the Cards, who was the man for the job? MKG needs to drop by Lexington ASAP and train this new generation of Cats on what it means to leave it all on the court. Other candidates could include Brandon Knight with his lecture on game winners and perseverance. DeMarcus Cousins on Phone Numbers & Hostile Environments or Josh Harellson with his speech from Stalls to South Beach. This team needs to find the fire that former Cats had.
Cal said it earlier, there is no magic wand. This team has got to develop the will to win mentality because college basketball has shown a good amount of parity to this point in the year. If the Cats are going to become the team I believe they can the grit to win will need to shine through.
