How to Develop the Will To Win

In Coach Cal’s postgame comments to the press he expressed that this team “needed a competitive spirit, more of a will to win. We’re trying to find it.”. He recounted the series at the end of the game when the Cats trailed by three and Nerlens got a block. The ball was heading right to Alex Poythress but somehow ended up in the hands of a Baylor player. The Baylor player was fouled as he scored and the rest is history. Last year we became spoiled as the team constantly demonstrated Cal’s refuse to lose mentality. This year while the Cats have battled back in their losses but just haven’t found a way to get the W. Transforming from weak to strong is no easy task but it can be done. Here are some tips for this young team to find the will to win:

Read Some Literature

After losing two in a row the Cats need to bounce back. Luckily our coach wrote the book on the subject. The focus now is to push on. Following the game Wiley Cauley-Stein was quoted as saying “We came in here thinking we were that team. And we’re not that team.” No they are not the 2012 National Champions. There is only one team that will be those guys. The journey for this team will be to watch them grow into their own team with their own offense and defensive style. There are going to be bumps along the way but the upside is still there for them to become pretty good.

See a Motivational Speaker

When I heard the words “will to win” there is one player that comes to mind, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. This team could use a pep talk from the warrior himself on what it takes to get the job done. Like in the final Four when UK needed a basket against the Cards, who was the man for the job? MKG needs to drop by Lexington ASAP and train this new generation of Cats on what it means to leave it all on the court. Other candidates could include Brandon Knight with his lecture on game winners and perseverance.  DeMarcus Cousins on Phone Numbers & Hostile Environments or Josh Harellson with his speech from Stalls to South Beach. This team needs to find the fire that former Cats had.

Cal said it earlier, there is no magic wand. This team has got to develop the will to win mentality because college basketball has shown a good amount of parity to this point in the year. If the Cats are going to become the team I believe they can the grit to win will need to shine through.

There was no heart or passion from these kids today, their body language late in the game was terrible. Noel needs to stand under the goal and shoot layups for about 3 hours and all of them need to shoot free throws. We hit 10 free throws, game is over!

Ok cal we understand they don’t have the will to win yet. What we don’t understand is why are you keeping archie at point? Why haven’t they figured out how to play against the zone? I love cal and i know he’s the right coach for our program. What i don’t like about him is he only takes credit for wins. The majority of this shit is do to cal not knowing how to play these guys, but you will never hear him say that.

With Ryan being out so long, Archie being a freshman – never running the point & then having to also try learning Cal offense on the fly, and Noel not getting on campus until late August; this lack of everything on offense & defense has to have been expected. We are going to be playing catch up for the rest of season, so we might as well get ready for it. Alex needs to light a fire under his ass to wake him up, the players need to learn how to run to the rim & stop standing around, Archie needs to slow the hell down-stop being a ball hog-stop taking so many out of control shots, Cal needs to start running more pick & roll screens to open up the lanes to the rim & open up 3 point looks, Noel & WCS need to stop with the little 2-3 foot shots & use their length & height to just dunk the ball. Everyone on the team has to shoot 100 free throws everyday after practice.

There is not a leader/manager in business that doesn’t have the responsibility for employee moral and attitude. Our coach is no different. If they don’t have the “will to win”, it is his fault. Quit blaming a bunch of 28 yr old kids. Do your job, Cal.

I know #2 was kidding, but he mentioned the Butler coach. In 7 or so years, when Cal decides to hang up his hat, I hope he is on our list and still at a lesser school. I think Orlando Antigua needs some HC experience before taking that role. Imagine what Brad Stevens could do with talent and a real budget. But of course, this is FAR into the future.

I didn’t think you could teach competitiveness. I expected something like WCS’s quote. I think they got a little too caught up in their own hype. The break will be good for them with time to really buckle down.

I have to say, the first All Access where someone was late to practice made me think something was up.
