How The ‘Cats Stacked Up Against The Last Four In

Unfortunately this maybe the image of Kentucky’s season

Well, the worst-case scenario happened and now tonight’s NIT selection show at 9pm just got a lot more interesting for Kentucky. At this point it’s hard to really gripe about not being included in the Big Dance given the up-and-down nature of this season, but for those who choose to disagree with the committee’s selection, we will at least keep you informed. Here’s how Kentucky’s tournament resume stacks up against the last 4 at-large teams in the Big Dance.

Kentucky (21-11):

RPI: 56

Record vs. RPI top 50: 3-4

Record vs. RPI top 100: 7-9

Strength of schedule: 73

Quality wins: Florida, Missouri, at Ole Miss

Costly losses: at Georgia, Vanderbilt

Record away from home: 5-9

#13 Boise State (21-10):

RPI: 44

Record vs. RPI top 50: 4-7

Record vs. RPI top 100: 8-8

Strength of schedule: 44

Quality wins: at Creighton, UNLV, Colorado State, San Diego State

Costly losses: at Utah, at Nevada

Record away from home: 7-9

#13 La Salle (21-9):

RPI: 40

Record vs. RPI Top 50: 2-4

Record vs. RPI Top 100: 5-8

Strength of schedule: 79

Quality wins: Butler, at VCU

Costly losses: Central Connecticut State

Record away from home: 10-7

#11 St. Mary’s (27-6):

RPI: 30

Record vs. RPI Top 50: 1-3

Record vs. RPI Top 100: 7-5

Strength of Schedule: 96

Quality Wins: Creighton

Bad Losses: Georgia Tech

Record Away From Home: 11-5

#11 Middle Tennessee State (28-5):

RPI: 29

Record vs. RPI top 50: 1-3

Record vs. RPI top 100: 2-3

Strength of schedule: 134

Quality wins: Ole Miss

Costly losses: Florida International

Record away from home: 13-5

What stands out to me as the biggest difference between these teams and Kentucky is that 3 of the 4 teams had winning records away from home while Kentucky struggled to 5-9 away from home, including losing their last 5 games away from Rupp Arena. Boise State had a 7-9 record away from Boise, but also had 4 very quality wins over NCAA Tournament teams. Ultimately, I think the biggest gripe will be that Middle Tennessee only managed 1 win over a tournament team at Ole Miss, who Kentucky also beat on the road.

Poythress and Harrow. Don’t let the door hit u on the way out…and an encore from either is not needed or wanted….oh, one more thing..please don’t play any better than u have been because that would really piss all of us off to think what could and should have been.

We can’t ever be on the bubble with the hate out there for us. They “print” reasons why we are not selcted but we all know why we aren’t as compared to other bubble teams. It’s unfair but we have to always be well above that line. However, we can only blame ourselves as we did not man-up when we needed to too many times this year.

Face it. This is not a tourney team, and we have players forecasted to be NBA players that are not NBA caliber players. Still love the players, but they were over rated as far as first year talent goes.

It’s a whole lot harder to win road games when you are every team’s Super Bowl with whiteouts, blackouts, t-shirt / ring giveaways, etc. Those teams that got in because of better road records did not have to deal with the shit UK had to put up with on the road.

The fact is this team had several opportunities to take care of business on the road. They failed miserably. If you can’t make a game out of playing the 10th seed in the SEC tourney, with the crowd 90% UK, you definitely don’t need to be in the NCAA tourney.

These guys got there bluff on cal and he didn’t know how to handle it, that and they were complete basketball retards. hope they all leave and not ruin the new class coming in. Everyone wants to blame these players right??? Cal recruits these guys. He certainly shares in the failure of this season. He should be familiar with their character, desire, work ethic, etc. Also, if some of these guys are still projected to be NBA draft picks, then doesn’t it seem that he had talent to be successful. It would be different if they had no talent at all. Just something to think about….

LOL STOP POSTING THIS GARBAGE. Kentucky didn’t get in because we didn’t deserve a bid. Between Cal’s shoddy scheduling this year, injuries/illness, and just general lack of being good, this team sucks. Stop “stacking us up” against the people who got bids. KENTUCKY HAD EVERY OPPORTUNITY LITERALLY 30 TIMES THIS SEASON, and we failed EVERY TIME IT MATTERED. If you lose by double digits to Arkansas, Georgia, and Vandy in the last week, what makes you think you deserve to be in the tournament?

  35. UKCats81
    7:41 pm March 17, 2013 Permalink

The UK team that took the floor against Vanderbilt Friday night in no way resembled a tournament team. Also, the poor showing by SEC pre-conference doomed us from the beginning. Even losing our best player, we finished tied for 2nd in SEC. I have to believe that Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia and Iowa are better than the fourth and fifth teams from the Atlantic 10 or the third and fourth team from the Mountain West. If your best wins are Creighton, Colorado State, and San Diego State, I’m not impressed.

Personally I would rather see some of these smaller teams get a chance to prove how they stack up against the big boys. We already had our chance and we failed. A lot of people thought VCU didn’t deserve to be in the tourney a couple of years ago and they made it to the final four. Butler has been to two final fours. George Mason suppose to have had no shot at getting out of the first weekend a few years ago and got to the final four. This is what March Madness is all about. It is not about a bunch of underachieving big boys getting beat out the first weekend, it is about the underdogs getting a chance to make a run.

I’m not really upset and certainly not surprised by us not making the tournament. Is there really any honor in UK just narrowly making the tournament with one of the last bids? No and everybody knows it. For teams that hit and miss the tournament then it’s an accomplishment but not for us. And next year I don’t think we will be wondering if we are going to make it but if we will get the overall number 1 seed. Say what you want about Cal not being able to coach and how we could be in the same position next year, but we all watched the same team and you can’t coach heart.

Pitino IS the best coach in college basketball. Coach(x’s and o’s) not recruiter. Must be a dozen better recruiters than rick. But give Rick the talent Cal just had and it would be a different thread today. This issue is not Cal, not the players or their talent level. It’s not the fans, not the pressure. Its all of it combined. Last years team could have won with no coach and playing 4 on 5 vs opponents. Living up what last years team did as a freshman heavy team would have never of been possible. Imagine the pressure that will be on next years freshman heavy team. Not having to follow the national champs but having to follow the team that let down Kentucky basketball. The pressure of knowing next year is a must.

I agree that there’s been something wrong with this team all season, but the kind of abuse a lot of the posters (not trolls, but Cats fans) have been heaping on Harrow, Poythress, and the team as a whole simply supports the national media narrative that Kentucky fans are a collective bunch of yahoos. And I’m amazed by how quick people are to turn on Cal–one sub-par season in four, when the team overachieved the first two seasons and brought home the banner just last year. Accept this setback with some class and stop whining. We should stand behind the program, not on the side shooting poison darts from the safety of a keyboard.

63- I like your way of thinking. What a bunch of classless whiners. Anybody who thinks Cal is not a good coach is an idiot. Ryan Harrow was supposed to be a back-up to Marcus Teague this year. No one thought he would go until the end of the year when he came on strong. We had a freshman class with no senior leadership, no experienced players from last year’s team. All of Cal’s previous teams had experienced players returning from the year before. The talent of this year’s freshmen class was over-rated. Let’s face it. Had we got Shabazz Muhammed or Anthony Bennett we would have been better. But we still would have been weak at point guard. And you have to have strong guard play in college bb. Next year we will have better talent, especially if we land Wiggins or Randle. It remains to be seen who will be back from this year’s team. Wiltger will be back and his experience will be very valuable for us. We must return to the team concept. If we have players who will sacrifice for the good of the team, then we will be successful and we will be able to put this year behind us.

Why do we (BBN) turn on our players coach and other fans like rabid dogs when things don’t go perfectly. People,we had a bad year (horrible) but,its not the end of the world.Cal will have us back next year and we will rock college basketball again. I think a lot of people like to troll our boards because we are so easily fired up. Why don’t we be loyal fans and back our coach and our young men and bite the bullit and move on. Don’t demonize Ryan,or Alex or Archie or anyone else, they have to live with the good and bad of this season for the rest of their lives,we have a short break and then next year to start over. Please, quit acting like bafoons and be true Kentucky fans, and proud members of the BBN.

I never could understand why we did not recruit a point guard. It turns out we needed one based on how many times guys were wide open, but did not get the ball. Another learning experience for the coaching staff I suppose.

the only thing MTSU had in their favor was their road record but with only playing 5 games versus the top 100 it tells you those road games were against no one.

It is amazing how many fans turn after one bad year. Praising Pitino as if he didn’t have a recent NIT bid on his resume.

63 You got it right. I get tired of the same old assholes getting on here and bitching. You either bleed blue or you are a band wagon fan. Fortunately at UK we only have room for one on our wagon.
