We heard a lot about how bad the SEC was last year in basketball, but you’d have to believe that a fired coach – especially the one from the winningest program of ever – would be above taking a job at Texas Pan-American. But, what about the Nigerian national basketball team? Well, that’s exactly the proposition posed to former WKU and UGa coach Dennis Felton, who politely declined the Nigerians when offered the gig. Felton was asked to take over the national team for the country he thinks has tons of recruiting potential in time for this year’s African Basketball Championship. Ultimately, Nigeria wanted him to lead them in the next year’s World Championships and the 2012 Olympics in London.
But, with his denial, he has avoided fading into third world oblivion like Nolan Richardson. This job is probably better suited for Gillispie anyway. The smirk and shoulder shrug is an international language.
And, in other WTF? news coming out of Athens, the powers that be are giving strong consideration to moving the game formerly known as The World’s Biggest Cocktail Party indoors at the Georgia Dome at least once every four years. That’s right, they took the name away first and now they might take the tradition of the game that is huge must-see TV regardless of your fandom. I mean, what’s next? The “Jazz” in Utah and the “Lakers” in Los Angeles?? Times are-a-changin’ and I don’t like it.
