Over the past several years of the Tubby Smith era, we have seen this team pull out some improbable wins….but this one may have been the most improbable. With seven minutes to go, I got up out of my seat and did what many journalists do but few want to admit….I walked off the court to begin my post-game preparations. Four minutes later, I look at the television screen in the media room and Kentucky has cut the game to 4 and it is clear that a comeback is on the way.
I of course rushed back into the gym, and I have to say that the last three minutes were as exciting for a Kentucky fan as they could be. The crowd was ELECTRIC….reminding me a great deal of the semifinal game last year against LSU when I thought the roof of the Georgia Dome might come off. The UK bench stood throughout virtually all of those three minutes and when Bobby Perry took the shot that ended up being decisive, they jumped with a joy only matched by the Three 6 Mafia at the Oscars.
In the locker room after the game, I asked the hard hitting questions (Shagari, where in the world do you find clothes to fit you?)….but I also heard a great deal about how this was an important game “to build momentum.” I will not be foolish enough to predict a big postseason run for this group…but it wouldnt shock me. These guys are slowly coming around, and even though it might not be pretty…it is becoming effective.
