I don’t know what people were watching, but I thought Newton looked the worst of all 3 during the practice drills. It seemed like not all, but most of his throws were over his reciever’s head or behind them. Max Smith looked the best just because he went hard through the practice reps. Towles had good looking throws, but looked sluggish through practice throws and scrambles. Just my 2 cents. But I really did not see Morgan Newton looking better than our other 2 QB’s.

I just think Newton and Max are just not good at all at the quarterback position. It would be nice if we could let the young guys learn, but in my opinion, we have to play Towles or the other freshman because Newton and Max are just not good at all.

  71. thewaitfor8

51 – A Freshman QB starting in the SEC is a huge mistake. It rarely results in a good season at all. Towles is good and if he pans out like he should, will be a very good QB at UK. But the jump from KY highschool football to playing in the SEC is too great to be able to adjust to in less than a year. You might respond to that by saying he would learn a lot and be better prepared next year. That could be true, but that admitting you aren’t concerned with this season. Additionally, if he is not mentally tough enough to handle having a terrible season, you could break him and then he will never meet his potential.

It’s all over but the crying at that point. What do you do if he gets hurt due to our porous O-line?

What are your options if Towles is not the savior you think he is?

71- oh bullshit… he will learn more in 2 SEC games than he would taking reps against the UK defense the entire year. Morgan had his chance… he sucked…. Max improved at the end of last year but looked horrible in 1st practice…. if he cannot beat out Towles, he doesnt deserve to start… bottom line. You make your own success, put Towles in shot gun and get the ball out of his hands quick until the line proves its strong… then incorporate a larger ammnt of plays… a 7yd hook or a 5 yd slant is not too much to ask for a QB to throw…

  84. Head Bussa

73 — Never said I thought he was a savior. I just think if he shows a stronger arm, more accuracy, and good mobility, I don’t see why he should sit behind two quarterbacks who aren’t good players. I fully expect him to throw interceptions and get killed out there but that is what happens to any quarterback that steps on the field for UK. I just think if he is the best we got you play him. Maybe you don’t need to start him right away, but it won’t hurt to rotate Max and Towles in until someone seperates himself.

112 — Ridiculous that you would even point to that as a excuse not to play a freshman. That was totally different circumstances than what is going on today. That was possibly the worst and least talented UK team in history (winning only one game)!!!!!! Also, Couch put in to run that offense was like putting a square peg into a round hole. They had him trying to run the option!!!!!!! He was slow as molasses and he was running the option in his first game AT FLORIDA!!!! They were a run-first offense and did not have a passing attack offense set up to allow him to get rid of the football. Don’t even try to use that as an excuse as why we shouldn’t play Towles or any other freshman!!!

127 – Deep crossing routes are completely non existent. Hell, when was the last time you saw a deep pass down the middle of the field? Anything deep is way outside of the hash marks and basically a jump ball to the sidelines. To me there is no excuse for the lack of short crossing routes and slants. Those are easy passes that anybody can make. If I see one more swing pass to a RB on 3rd and 8, I’m going to go insanse.

Anybody saying Morgan Newton had his chance is just wrong, that’s just dumb. The guy got fed to the wolves and was crushed because he played with a horrid o-line. His days with Hartline, he never knew who was starting. Last year, there were no receivers. His confidence was shot because he’s been jerked around by the coaches. I’ve said it over and over, do not ruin Towles the same way you did Newton.

153- You’re asking me to speculate on what Tim Couch thinks based on what might have been with his frosh year in 1996?

And that will tell you what?

Curry’s O-line sucked at run blocking and was, ironically, ‘built’ for the option. If we play fairytale games and sprinkle some glitter on your little dreamscape and say that Mumme got hired that spring and was able to recruit some agile tackles (lol)… I’d still say Tim would feel same. We sucked all around that year sans Tim and Craig.

This year, we have no Tim, we have no Craig and the o-line situation is, at best, marginally better.

Throw Pat out there, man. It’s your world. Just don’t start crying when the spit hits the fan and it becomes painfully obvious that a RS would have been the smarter play. B/c it’s too late to play the smart money then.

169 — Just think you know that would have been a circumstance in which a freshman certainly should start. I just think it’s obvious that if Mumme was the coach and the offensive scheme was fit for him that Tim Couch’s experience as a freshman would have been different. I think “thrown to the wolves” is more in reference to having to come into the game in “The Swamp” with his team down a bunch of points and being expected to run an option-style offense with very slow feet and inferior blocking. Tim Couch was absolutely mauled in that game and could have been injured very badly the way the Gators were teeing off on him.

I do think if Towles or even Whitlow are good enough that they deserve some snaps along with Max. I’m not saying they should be totally depended on right away, but they could be swapped in and out during the game. Secondly, you will never hear me thinking he should have been redshirted. Redshirting is for teams with depth and I don’t think this team has much room to be redshirting talented players.
