UK won 27-13, but that final result was long in doubt.
The first half was about as ugly a thirty minutes of football as I’ve ever seen. It started with a Matt Roark touchdown drop. Then, after a Danny Trevathan pick, Morgan Newton overthrows a wide open La’Rod King in the end zone followed by a Craig McIntosh missed field goal. The whole ugly affair culminated after a strong defensive three and out, in a series that saw a pass interference flag to move within striking distance only to have Newton take a dumb sack then throw an interception right before halftime.
The second half started pretty much the same with a Raymond Sanders kick off return fumble. However with four minutes left in the third quarter, Central Michigan gift wrapped the game to UK by going for it, and failing, on 4th and inches from their own 34 yard line. Immediately after, Newton hit King for a touchdown and the next drive saw Josh Clemons put his man suit on and run for an 87 yard touchdown to take the lead. Then, in a very un-Joker Phillips like call, UK scored on a Newton keeper after going for it on 4th and goal from the one. That score put UK up two touchdowns, and after a Randall Burden interception, Central Michigan couldn’t recover.
Both the defense and offense started off looking terrible, but they turned it around (defense sooner than offense) and put away a Chippewa team that shouldn’t have led us for that long. We’ll have more soon, but until then…
